Colonic complications of acute pancreatitis include "pseudo-obstruction," necrosis, hemorrhage, fistula, and ischemic colitis. With the ten cases reported in this article, there are now 75 cases reported in the literature to our knowledge. The fulminating lesions (necrosis and hemorrhage) are usually associated with pancreatic abscess and/or pseudocyst and may occur because of a direct pressure effect with secondary vascular compromise. The lesions are predominant in the transverse colon and at the splenic flexure. Because the risk factor for a colonic complication from pancreatitis is highest

BACKGROUND: Aim of the paper is to evaluate the indications and results of stricture plasty in the treatment of intestinal obstruction due to Crohn's disease. It is hypothesized that, as far as fibrotic strictures are treated, operative morbidity will be reduced to a minimum.
METHODS: Data regarding 147 interventions for Crohn's disease performed in a 4.5 year-period have been prospectively collected. Eight interventions including stricture plasty have been identified and indication, morbidity and end results analyzed.
RESULTS: In 8 interventions 20 stricture plasties have been performed. As

This paper examines the safety and feasibility of providing short-term, in-home total parenteral nutrition (TPN) for patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) for whom the alternative is prolonged hospitalization or early surgery. The records of all patients with IBD who were receiving temporary home TPN between June 1996 and July 2000 were reviewed. A quality-of-life phone interview was conducted at the time of review. Fifteen patients (11 men and 4 women) were identified whose average age was 35 years. The underlying diagnosis was Crohn's disease in 10 and ulcerative colitis in five. Th

A case report of giant sigmoidal diverticulum and a review of the relevant medical literature are presented. Only 20 cases have previously been reported. Diagnosis is dependent on a gradually enlarging mass, usually found on physicial examination. Radiologic study usually confirms the diagnosis and differentiates this condition from others, such as intestinal duplication, emphysematous cholecystitis, cholecysto-enteric fistulas, etc. The treatment is prophylactic. It is important to undertake early surgical intervention before the condition progresses to perforation or other complications.

The results of the affected esophagus substitution, using a large intestine segment, in postburn stenosis in 42 patients were analyzed. Complete cicatricial esophageal impassability, impossibility or dangerous bougienage, rapid occurrence of the stricture recurrence, anamnesis data about perforation occurrence, presence of esophageal fistula have constituted the indications for the intervention performance. The best results were achieved while application of isoperistaltic retrosternal coloesophagoplasty, using left half of large intestine. The early postoperative complication was partial insu

Typical morphological changes resulting from Crohn's disease, including hyperplasia of resident lymphatic tissue, abscesses, fistulae, adhesions, and diverticula, are described in this paper, with reference being made to a case history. The following demands are derived from the findings for gynaecological practice: 1. intestinal diagnosis for all unelucidated adnexal tumours; 2. cooperation with surgeons for surgery; 3. anal lesions should in any case be regarded as a reason to think of Crohn's disease; 4. Crohn's disease should be included into differential diagnosis, whenever pathological a

Three patients with Crohn's disease primarily involving the large intestine had unusual abscesses of the vulvar area. At biopsy, the abscesses had classic features of the primary disease and were clearly separated from the intestinal tract. There was no fistula in the anal canal, and the perineum between the vulvar abscess and the anus was normal. One of the patients also had an early lesion of Crohn's disease in the sigmoid. The lesion appeared as a small erythematous spot without ulceration. Biopsy revealed a typical granuloma under an intact mucosa. It is concluded that Crohn's disease is n

Congenital esophageal atresia, in which the proximal esophagus forms a blind end, results in respiratory failure due to aspiration of saliva. When accompanied by a distal tracheoesophageal fistula, increased intragastric pressure causes gastric juice to reflux into the trachea, resulting in severe pneumonia. Because of the above conditions, surgery should be performed early in life once the diagnosis is made. Conventionally, a two-stage radical operation was performed after gastrostomy. Recently, if the patient is in good general condition, a one-stage radical operation is preferred without ga

BACKGROUND: Conventional abdominal CT and Ultrasonography were not adequate for the immediate assessment of a closed perforation of the small intestine showing continuity. For definitive diagnosis of the main pathology, we advise enteroclysis.
METHODS: All patients had non-traumatic small bowel perforation and had many diagnostic procedures including conventional abdominal CT and ultrasonography, but did not get a positive result from them. Following the enteroclysis, it was obvious that there existed a closed small bowel perforation with continuity.
RESULTS: The first patient had fistula an

BACKGROUND & AIMS: High output entero-cutaneous fistulas may lead to intestinal failure with parenteral nutrition (PN) as the gold standard treatment to prevent dehydration and malnutrition. However in case of entero-atmospheric fistula (EAF) with the distal limb of the fistula accessible, chyme reinfusion (CR), a technique that restores artificially digestive continuity can be performed until the surgical repair. Our aim was to study the efficacy of CR in EAF regarding nutritional status, intestinal function, PN weaning and liver tests.
METHODS: Retrospective study of 37 patients admitted fo

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) includes Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), chronic immune-mediated conditions of the gastrointestinal tract characterized by alternating periods of disease activity and remission with a complex multifactorial pathogenesis. Persistent intestinal inflammation in IBD is a key driver of disease progression and is strongly associated with the development of complications such as dysplasia, colorectal cancer (CRC), intestinal strictures, and fistulas. It may also result in changes in anorectal function, identifiable and classifiable using high-resolut

BACKGROUND: An open abdomen with frozen adherent bowels is classified as grade 4 in Björck's open abdomen classification, and skin grafting after wound granulation is a typical closure option. We achieved delayed primary fascia closure for a patient who developed open abdomen with enteroatmospheric fistulas due to severe adherent small bowel obstruction. We present here the details of his management.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 52-year-old man suffered acute abdominal pain during a flight and received an emergency laparotomy due to adhesive small bowel obstruction. Repeated laparotomies were require
