The effect of different optical zone diameters on the results of high-order aberrations in femto-laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the postoperative high-order aberration differences of femto-LASIK surgery in 6.5 and 7 mm optic zones. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 80 eyes of 40 patients with myopia or myopia with astigmatism who underwent femtosecond LASIK surgery. Q values, z3, 3 (h. trefoil), z3, -3 (v. trefoil), z3, 1 (h. coma), z3, -1 (vertical coma), z4, 0 (spherical aberration), z5, -1 (second other v. coma), aberration coefficients were evaluated 3 months after surgery. Central corneal thicknesses, intraocular pressures, patient ages and genders, optical zone diameters and

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of lowering laser energy on clinical outcomes in small-incision lenticule extraction (SMILE). DESIGN: Prospective randomized clinical trial. METHODS: A total of 151 patients (151 eyes) with moderate myopia scheduled for SMILE were included: 58 eyes received SMILE with low energy (100, 105, and 110 nJ; L-SMILE group) and 93 with conventional energy (115-150 nJ; C-SMILE group). Patients received complete ophthalmic examinations preoperatively and over 3 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Uncorrected distance visual acuity (logMAR UDVA) 1 day and 1 week postopera

Hypopyon uveitis following LASIK in a patient with ulcerative colitis.

PURPOSE: To present a case of unilateral hypopyon uveitis that began 15 days after uneventful bilateral LASIK in a 24-year-old man with an undisclosed history of ulcerative colitis. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: The hypopyon uveitis completely resolved after treatment with aggressive topical and oral steroid agents in combination with topical antibiotic coverage. CONCLUSIONS: Although rare, visually significant hypopyon uveitis may arise after LASIK in the setting of ulcerative colitis and positive human leukocyte antigen (HLA) B27. PURPOSE: To assess quality of vision after laser-assisted subepithelial keratectomy (LASEK). SETTING: Private practice, United Kingdom. DESIGN: Case series. METHODS: Consecutive patients having bilateral LASEK with a Schwind Amaris laser for myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism completed the Quality of Vision (QoV) questionnaire preoperatively and 5 days, 2 weeks, and 1 and 3 months postoperatively. The outcome measures were QoV scores for symptom frequency, severity, and bothersome. The QoV scores range from 0 to 100; higher scores indicate poorer quality of vision. RESULTS: The study enroll

Bioptics with LASIK flap first for the treatment of high ametropia.

PURPOSE: To report the safety and predictability of an alternate sequence of the bioptics procedure. METHODS: In this prospective study of 50 eyes, phakic intraocular lenses (IOLs) and pseudophakic IOLs were implanted, followed by LASIK. The corneal flap was created, followed by lens implantation 3 days later. Laser ablation was performed to the stromal bed 3 months later. Fifty eyes with varying degrees of refractive error (range of manifest refraction spherical equivalent [MRSE], -19.50 to +8.50 diopters [D]) were treated. Follow-up ranged from 3 months to 4 years postoperatively. RESULTS:

Wavefront-guided LASIK for the correction of primary myopia and astigmatism a report by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

OBJECTIVE: To describe wavefront-guided (WFG) LASIK for the primary treatment of low to moderate levels of myopia and astigmatism and to examine the evidence on the safety and effectiveness of the procedure in comparison with conventional LASIK. METHODS: Literature searches conducted in 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 retrieved 209 unique references from the PubMed and Cochrane Library databases. The panel selected 65 articles to review, and of these, chose 45 articles that they considered to be of sufficient clinical relevance to submit to the panel methodologist for review. During the review and

Clinical outcomes of laser in situ keratomileusis using combined topography and refractive wavefront treatments for myopic astigmatism.

PURPOSE: To evaluate outcomes of laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) guided by wavefront alone versus wavefront plus topographic data. SETTING: NewVision Clinics, Cheltenham, Australia. METHODS: Twenty-one eyes (14 patients) were distributed into 2 groups in a prospective double-masked study. One group was treated by wavefront parameters alone (WF, n = 11), and the other, by wavefront combined with topography values (WF&VP, n = 10) using vector planning. All treatments were performed using Visx Star S4 CustomVue software. In the WF&VP group, the treatment profile was calculated using simula
