Transcriptome Profiling of Stem-Differentiating Xylem in Response to Abiotic Stresses Based on Hybrid Sequencing in Cunninghamia lanceolata.

Cunninghamia lanceolata (C. lanceolata) belongs to Gymnospermae, which are fast-growing and have desirable wood properties. However, C. lanc … 46 differentially expressed genes in response to different stresses, of which most had functions in lignin catabolism, pectin catabolism, and xylan metabolism, indicating that the development of stem-differentiating xylem was affected upon stress treatment. Finally, we identified a total of 51 AP2/ERF, 29 NAC, and 37 WRKY transcript factors in C. lanceol …

Polyester-releasing sesamin by electrospinning technique for the application of bone tissue engineering.

Sesamin, a significant lignin compound isolated from sesame (Sesamum indicum Linn), is well known for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and tissue growth promotion properties. Bioabsorbable poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) is also a well-known polymer applied to various fields of medicine as biomaterials. The main objective of this research was to produce a prototype material from PCL and sesamin by electrospinning technique for bone tissue engineering applications. Dichloromethane and dimethylformamide (7:3) mixture was used as the solvent system for fabrication of PCL nanofiber with different lo…

Ferulic acid-mediated modulation of apoptotic signaling pathways in cancer.

Ferulic acid (4-hydroxy-3-methoxycinnamic acid, FA), a hydroxycinnamic acid derived from various seeds, nuts, leaves, and fruits, exists in a free form as well as is covalently conjugated with polysaccharides, glycoproteins, polyamines, lignin, and hydroxy fatty acids of plant cell walls. It exhibits a variety of pharmacological effects, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, vasodilatory, antithrombotic, antimicrobial, anti-allergic, antiviral, hepatoprotective, and anticancer activities. FA induces the expression of cell cycle-related proteins, such as p53 and p21, and reduces cyclin D1 and…

ZnO nanoparticles induce cell wall remodeling and modify ROS/ RNS signalling in roots of Brassica seedlings.

Cell wall-associated defence against zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) as well as nitro-oxidative signalling and its consequences in plants are poorly examined. Therefore, this study compares the effect of chemically synthetized ZnO NPs (~45 nm, 25 or 100 mg/L) on Brassica napus and Brassica juncea seedlings. The effects on root biomass and viability suggest that B. napus is more tolerant to ZnO NP exposure relative to B. juncea. This may be due to the lack of Zn ion accumulation in the roots, which is related to the increase in the amount of lignin, suberin, pectin and in peroxidase activity…

A biorefinery for conversion of citrus peel waste into essential oils, pectin, fertilizer and succinic acid via different fermentation strategies.

A process for the valorization of citrus peel waste (CPW) has been developed aiming to produce succinic acid and a series of added-value products through the biorefinery platform. CPW was subject to physicochemical and biological treatment to isolate essential oils (0.43%) and pectin (30.53%) as extractable products, pretreating the material for subsequent production of succinic acid that enabled application of remaining biorefinery residues (BR) as fertilizer substitute. Cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin contents of CPW accounted for 22.45%, 8.05% and 0.66% respectively, while acid hydrolys…

A lower cost method of preparing corn stover for Irpex lacteus treatment by ensiling with lactic acid bacteria.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated a method of preparing corn stover for Irpex lacteus (I. lacteus) treatment to improve its in vitro rumen … noculated with both L. plantarum and L. buchneri. This led to an 18% decrease in the acid detergent lignin content, and a 49.6% increase in IVGP compared with the raw stover. CONCLUSION: The combination of ensiling with the mixed LAB inoculation and I. lacteus treatment provided a cost-effective method for the improvement of the IVGP of corn stover from …

An AGAMOUS MADS-box protein, SlMBP3, regulates the speed of placenta liquefaction and controls seed formation in tomato.

[Protein enrichment of sugar beet bagasse for fermentation].

Leached beet pulp is a plentiful waste in the sugar beet industry in Chile, reaching 100.000 metric tons per year on a dry basis. It represents an interesting substrate for protein upgrading through fermentation by cellulolytic organisms, because of the high content of cellulose and hemicellulose, with small amounts of protein and lignin (Table 1). The fermentation of leached beet pulp by the cellulolytic fungus Trichoderma reesei QM 9414 was studied under carbon limitation, with the celluloses as the only carbon and energy source. Nitrogen was supplied as ammonium sulphate and the medium was …

Response-surface optimization of air-dried alkali-treated structural bamboo for enhanced flexural strength, elastic modulus and creep resistance.

Bamboo is a promising bio-based construction material owing to its rapid renewability, lightweight characteristics, and high specific streng … . Radial Water Loss Assay in Rice Roots Grown in Different Media.

Plants growing in soil are exposed to several environmental stresses, such as soil compaction, flooding, or drought, and need to quickly acclimate to these conditions to survive. Such acclimations include suberization and lignification of the outer and inner parts of the root. Visualization of suberin and lignin depositions in roots can be done with several well-established staining techniques followed by microscopy, but these methods are mostly qualitative. Radial water loss assays provide a quick, robust, and quantitative method to evaluate the formation of suberized and/or lignified outer a…

Breaking the Glucose Feedback Barrier: An Integrated Process Enables Efficient High-Solid L-lactic.

During saccharification and fermentation, glucose feedback inhibition severely restricts enzymatic hydrolysis efficiency. To address this issue, an integrated Mild Pretreatment-Pre-Enzymatic Hydrolysis-High-Solid Synchronized State Fermentation (MP-PEH-HSSF) process was developed using corn stover (CS) for efficient lactic acid production. In the mild pretreatment (MP) stage, treatment with low-dosage sodium hydroxide (0.02gg⁻¹ CS) and 5% (w/w) aqueous ammonia at 50% solid loading achieved 43.01% lignin removal while reducing chemical consumption. In the pre-enzymatic hydrolysis (PEH) stage, o…

Nanoscale magnesium oxide reduces the accumulation and toxicity of micro/nanoplastics by accelerating root lignification and alleviating endoplasmic reticulum stress.

The risk to agricultural production and human health from micro/nanoplastics (MNPs) exposure cannot be ignored, making it imperative to find … t MgO·NP upregulates phenylpropanoid biosynthesis genes (PAL, 4CL, CCR). This upregulation elevated lignin content by 26.7% and stimulated root lignification, a response that may be linked to the observed reduction in apoplastic uptake and transport of MNPs. Furthermore, MgO·NP was associated with changes in ERAD‑related gene expression and may have cont …

The Defense Mechanism of PpCAD4 in Physcomitrium patens Against Botrytis cinerea.

The existence of lignin in Physcomitrium patens has been controversial. However, cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD), the key enzyme in monolignol biosynthesis, has been identified with four gene members in P. patens. Despite the roles of PpCAD1 in moss architecture being proven in a previous study, the functions and molecular mechanisms of PpCAD4 remain largely unexplored in early terrestrial plants. This study aims to unravel this mystery via a comprehensive analysis of the transcriptome and metabolome of PpCAD4-overexpression (OE) lines compared with wild type (WT) under Botrytis cinerea t…
