Tissue mineral levels in victims of sudden infant death syndrome II. Essential minerals: copper, zinc, calcium, and magnesium.

Deficiencies of various vitamin and minerals per se have been suggested as possible causes of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Further, a deficiency of essential minerals may lead to enhanced toxicity of toxic elements, in particular, lead and cadmium to explore the possibility of mineral deficiencies or interactions with the toxic metals, lead and cadmium, lung, liver, kidney, and rib specimens were obtained at autopsy from 66 SIDS infants and 23 infants who died suddenly from other cases. Tissue copper, zinc, calcium, and magnesium were measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. No diff

Renal magnesium handling: new insights in understanding old problems.

Recent research has provided new concepts in our understanding of renal magnesium handling. Although the majority of the filtered magnesium is reabsorbed within the loop of Henle, it is now recognized that the distal tubule also plays an important role in magnesium conservation. Magnesium absorption within the cTAL segment of the loop is passive and dependent on the transepithelial voltage. Magnesium transport in the DCT is active and transcellular in nature. Many of the hormonal (PTH, calcitonin, glucagon, AVP) and nonhormonal (magnesium-restriction, acid-base changes, potassium-depletion) in

Magnesium levels in serum and erythrocytes of children from Kerala.

BACKGROUND: Magnesium is required in higher quantities, during the phase of rapid growth, in children. Its level in the ground water in Kerala is low. This can cause magnesium deficiency especially in children from the lower socio-economic groups who also suffer from nutritional insufficiency. METHODS: We compared the serum and erythrocyte magnesium levels of school children from high and low (agricultural labourers and fisherfolk) socio-economic groups. These levels were determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Body mass indices and haemoglobin levels were used as indirect measu…

Serum Magnesium Concentration in Patients With Bell's Palsy: A Case-Control Study.

Introduction: Some conditions such as hyperglycemia, preeclampsia, migraine, inflammation, oxidative stress, and peripheral neuropathy are associated with magnesium deficiency and Bell's palsy. To date, however, studies have not addressed serum magnesium concentration in patients with Bell's palsy. In this article, we hypothesized that these patients may have a decreased serum magnesium concentration compared to healthy controls. Materials and Methods: In the study, a total of 24 patients with Bell's palsy and 24 healthy individuals matched were investigated. Atomic absorption spectrometry was…

Potassium, magnesium, and electrolyte imbalance and complications in disease management.

Electrolyte balance is a critical issue in managing comorbid conditions in both diseased and elderly patients. Patients with hypertension and diabetes need careful regulation of their calcium and magnesium levels, whereas in patients with congestive heart failure, sodium and potassium levels also are critical. Herein we report the outcome of a round table discussion at which issues of renal magnesium clearance, magnesium and arrhythmic risk, ion balance in heart failure, diabetes, ischemic stress, oxidative stress in the cardiomyopathy of magnesium deficiency, roles of magnesium and potassium …

Detection of Spinal Tuberculosis by F-18 FDG PET/CT as a Cause of Unusual Referred Pain in the Right Upper Quadrant of Abdomen.

Prenatal under-nutrition involves changes in the epigenetic regulation of specific genes. Maternal magnesium (Mg) deficiency affects maternal glucocorticoid metabolism, but the mechanisms underlying changes in glucocorticoid homeostasis of offspring are not well understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of feeding pregnant rats a Mg-deficient diet (0.003% magnesium) on the methylation of cytosine-guanine (CpG) dinucleotides in hepatic glucocorticoid genes of neonatal offspring, compared with controls (0.082% magnesium). Methylation of CpG dinucleotides in the peroxisome proliferat

Vitamin B-6 depletion followed by repletion with animal- or plant-source diets and calcium and magnesium metabolism in young women.

An 84-98-d study was conducted in young women to determine the effect of vitamin B-6-deficient diets on calcium and magnesium metabolism. A vitamin B-6-deficient formula diet fed initially was followed by either animal- or plant-source protein food diets containing four increasing amounts of vitamin B-6. Calcium balance was negative during vitamin B-6 depletion. Serum calcium was higher and calcium balance negative with the plant protein diets. Magnesium balance was negative during vitamin B-6 depletion due to increased urinary magnesium excretion. Urinary calcium decreased during vitamin B-6

Magnesium and potassium in diabetes and carbohydrate metabolism. Review of the present status and recent results.

Diabetes mellitus is the most common pathological state in which secondary magnesium deficiency occurs. Magnesium metabolism abnormalities vary according to the multiple clinical forms of diabetes: plasma magnesium is more often decreased than red blood cell magnesium. Plasma Mg levels are correlated mainly with the severity of the diabetic state, glucose disposal and endogenous insulin secretion. Various mechanisms are involved in the induction of Mg depletion in diabetes mellitus, i.e. insulin and epinephrine secretion, modifications of the vitamin D metabolism, decrease of blood P, vitamin …

Hypomagnesemia in Patients With Cancer: The Forgotten Ion.

Magnesium is crucial for various cellular and enzymatic processes, yet it often is overlooked or underappreciated. Hypomagnesemia, a deficiency of magnesium in the blood, is a frequent problem in cancer patients and can lead to severe symptoms and morbidity. In this review, we provide an in-depth analysis of the physiology and regulation of magnesium, and signs and symptoms of hypomagnesemia in cancer patients. We also examine the causes and mechanisms of magnesium imbalances in cancer patients, specifically focusing on cancer-specific therapies that can lead to hypomagnesemia. Finally, we pro

Association between oral intake magnesium and sarcopenia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is a common skeletal muscle disorder in the elderly population. The patients with sarcopenia increased the cost of care and the risk for hospitalization. Magnesium deficiency might increase reactive oxygen species and protein damage. The purpose of our study was to demonstrate the relation between oral intake magnesium and sarcopenia by European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People (EWGSOP) 2 definition. METHODS: Our study included 2532 participants with 1310 males and 1222 females. The multiple logistic regression model was designed to test the cross-sectional p…

Beneficial effects of magnesium in chronic renal failure: a foe no longer.

Magnesium plays a critical role in cellular physiology in humans, regulating many fundamental functions. In the general population its deficiency is associated with many disorders, the most significant being cardiovascular diseases. The role of magnesium in many aspects of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) may be also very important, although this has not been explored in depth. The most significant of these roles are use of magnesium salts as phosphate binders and its ability to inhibit the development or progression of vascular calcification. Moreover, serum magnesium suppresses parathyroid hor

Evaluation of serum vitamin B12 and D, iron, ferritin, folate, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium levels in children in palliative care clinic: a single-center cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric palliative care (PPC) patients are at an elevated risk of malnutrition. Nutritional inadequacy can also cause micronutrient deficiencies. These factors can lead to weight loss, stunted growth, and poor quality of life. Despite the prevalence of these issues, limited research exists in the micronutrient status of PPC patients. The purpose of this study was to determine the vitamin B12 and D, iron, ferritin, folate, calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium levels of PPC patients to contribute to a better understanding of their micronutrient needs as well as the appropriate manage

The effect of routine magnesium supplementation on fetal cardiac time intervals: a fetal magnetocardiographic study.

OBJECTIVES: Magnesium deficiency in pregnancy is frequent, and in consequence magnesium supplementation is widely used. As magnesium crosses the placental barrier and since the fetal kidney does not excrete magnesium as efficiently as the mature kidney, effects on fetal cardiac time intervals are probable, but still unknown. STUDY DESIGN: Sixty pregnant women were included in an observational study: 31 patients received oral routine magnesium supplementation. In addition to routine fetal echocardiography, fetal magnetocardiography (fMCG) was used to investigate electrophysiological rhythm pat…

Complementary vascular-protective actions of magnesium and taurine: a rationale for magnesium taurate.

By a variety of mechanisms, magnesium functions both intracellularly and extracellularly to minimize the cytoplasmic free calcium level, [Ca2+]i. This may be the chief reason why correction of magnesium deficiency, or induction of hypermagnesemia by parenteral infusion, exerts antihypertensive, anti-atherosclerotic, anti-arrhythmic and antithrombotic effects. Although the amino acid taurine can increase systolic calcium transients in cardiac cells (and thus has positive inotropic activity), it has other actions which tend to reduce [Ca2+]i. Indeed, in animal or clinical studies, taurine lowers…

Influence of magnesium concentration on production of exoprotein and beta-lactamase by Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus hemolyticus.

Earlier investigations demonstrated that production and secretion of toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1) and total exoprotein by strains of Staphylococcus aureus were maximal when magnesium ion was limiting and diminished when the concentration of magnesium increased. This investigation studied the influence of magnesium concentration on production of total exoprotein and beta-lactamase by strains of S. aureus and Staphylococcus hemolyticus, isolated from the genital tracts of women. These strains were resistant to penicillins. Each organism was incubated in chemically defined medium with va
