In recent years, chemicals with hormone-like properties have become a topic of scientific and public discussion. It has been hypothesized that prenatal exposure of the male fetus to endocrine disruptors may be responsible for a series of outcomes, such as hypospadias and cryptorchidism. The purpose of this study was to review the endocrine disruption hypothesis, to present the relevant supporting evidence, to summarize the current knowledge, to identify gaps and limitations in the interpretation of published data, and to define future directions in research. An update on environmental estrogen

The current study examined associations between maternal posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms and infant emotional reactivity and emotion regulation during the first year of life in a primarily low-income, urban, ethnic/racial minority sample of 52 mother-infant dyads. Mothers completed questionnaires assessing their own trauma exposure history and current PTSD and depressive symptoms and their infants' temperament when the infants were 6 months old. Dyads participated in the repeated Still-Face Paradigm (SFP-R) when the infants were 6 months old, and infant affective states were code

BACKGROUND: Opioid and cocaine antenatal substance use can result in significant obstetric and pediatric health implications. Accurate detection of in utero-exposed neonates can improve patient care and health outcomes. Therefore, the effectiveness of mother-infant biological and diagnostic indicators collected at labor and delivery to provide accurate detection of in utero opiate and cocaine exposure was assessed.
METHODS: A retrospective medical chart review included 335 mother-infant dyads exposed to antenatal substances who were delivered between January 2009 and March 2014. Mother-infant

Determination of the relationships between drug dosage, maternal and infant (cord blood) plasma drug concentrations, and serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI) bioeffect on offspring neurobehavior is crucial to assessing the effects of gestational SRI exposure. Measurement of maternal and cord blood platelet serotonin (5-HT) provides an index of inhibitory bioeffect at the 5-HT transporter and complements other measures of drug exposure. Three groups of mother-infant pairs were evaluated: (1) mothers with depression untreated with SRIs (DEP, n = 17), (2) mothers treated for depression with SRIs (D

INTRODUCTION: Parental exposure to tobacco smoke has been associated with an increased risk of stillbirth, while only a few studies took the overall parental tobacco exposure status into consideration. We aim to explore the relationship of parental smoking and passive smoking before and during pregnancy with stillbirth in a large Chinese rural cohort.
DESIGN: 248 501 couples were enrolled in a national prospective cohort study conducted in rural China. Parental exposure to tobacco smoke before and during pregnancy, along with other risk factors, was ascertained by questionnaires. Pregnancy ou

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a common endocrine disruptor and a high-fat diet (HFD) also affects fertility. However, little is known about the long-term consequences of simultaneous exposure to BPA and a HFD on reproductive health. Herein, we assessed the effects of maternal exposure to BPA in combination with a HFD on reproductive function in subsequent generations of female mice and evaluated its effects on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. We found that the combination of maternal exposure to BPA and a HFD led to increased urine BPA levels, precocious puberty, altered estrous cyclicity, decr…

Tire-derived chemicals (TDCs) are emerging contaminants with potential neurotoxicity. Their detection in maternal biological matrices raises concerns about its effect on early neurodevelopment. In this prospective birth cohort of 226 mother-child pairs in Wuhan, China, we investigated associations between prenatal TDCs exposure and early neurodevelopment using an integrated framework combining mixture and single-chemical models. Repeated maternal urine samples across pregnancy enabled robust exposure assessment of TDCs, including substituted N, N'-p-phenylenediamines derived quinones (PPD-Qs),

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are a ubiquitous contaminant. Identification of MNPs in the human placenta suggests this toxicant poses a danger to developing offspring. Previously, we demonstrated that maternal pulmonary MNP exposure restricts fetal growth and disrupts fetoplacental cardiovascular function in rats. Herein, we investigated how repeated maternal inhalation of polyamide-12 MNP from gestational day 4-19 during pregnancy (10 mg/m3, geometric mean 175.8 ± 1.9 nm, mode particle size 19 nm, size range 6 nm-8 μm) in Sprague Dawley rats influences cardiovascular development and function

Seasonal variation in maternal exposure to sunlight during pregnancy, which relates to variation in vitamin D and other micronutrient availability for a fetus, is a prevalent explanation for the variation of offspring traits with birth season. However, little consensus exists about the pregnancy period during which the fetus is most sensitive to maternal UV exposure and which offspring traits are most sensitive. We examined the association between 11 anthropometric traits and birth season/month among 18,459-23,876 Estonian children born in 1937-62. Nine traits showed seasonal patterns, which w…

Currently, research on the association of prenatal phthalate exposure with leptin, as well as the mediating role of DNA methylation, is insufficient. A birth cohort in China was conducted, followed by pregnancy to early childhood. During the follow-up period, measurements were conducted for 160 mother-child pairs, including maternal urinary phthalate concentrations in three trimesters, DNA methylation in cord blood, and leptin levels in children's plasma. The present study found that maternal urinary levels of specific phthalate metabolites, particularly MiBP (adjusted percent change [95% CI];

Prenatal exposure to phthalates may affect placental function and fetal development, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. The aim of our study was to explore the alterations in the placental transcriptome associated with prenatal phthalate exposure and to further analyze whether the placental-brain axis (PBA) genes play a mediating role in the association between prenatal phthalate exposure and children's neurodevelopment. We included 172 participants from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort and collected data on seven phthalate metabolites in urine during pregnancy, placental tissue RNA-seq, and

Smoking by women is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes such as spontaneous abortion, preterm delivery, low birth weight, infertility, and prolonged time to pregnancy. Anogenital distance (AGD) is a sensitive biomarker of prenatal androgen and antiandrogen exposure. We investigated the effect of smoking and passive smoke exposure during pregnancy on anogenital distance in offspring at 4 years in the INMA-Asturias cohort (Spain). Women were interviewed during pregnancy to collect information on tobacco consumption, and anogenital distance was measured in 381 children: Anoscrotal distance

Prenatal exposure to total mercury (T-Hg) comes from both natural and anthropogenic sources. T-Hg can cross the blood-brain and placental barriers, and may be associated with future neurological and physiological dysfunctions. Scalp hair is an optimal and non-invasive indicator of chronic T-Hg exposure. As part of the Maternal-Infant Research on Environmental Chemicals (MIREC) Study, hair samples from 350 women were collected within weeks after giving birth, to determine temporal variations in T-Hg levels from preconception to delivery, and to compare these levels to corresponding levels measu

Epidemiologic evidence of an adverse association between exposure to methylmercury (MeHg) from consuming fish and heart rate variability (HRV) is inconclusive. We aimed to evaluate MeHg exposure in relation to HRV parameters in a large cohort of young adults from a high fish consuming population in the Republic of Seychelles. Main Cohort participants in the Seychelles Child Development Study were evaluated at a mean age of 19 years. Prenatal MeHg exposure was determined in maternal hair growing during pregnancy and recent exposure in participant's hair taken at the evaluation. The evaluation c
