Norwegian scabies seen at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Norwegian scabies, also known as crusted scabies, is a severe form of scabies caused by an infestation of the skin by the Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis mite. It is usually diagnostically challenging because of its rare nature and the potential for misdiagnosis with other skin diseases. This case report presents a rare case of Norwegian scabies seen at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Ituku-Ozalla, Enugu State. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient, a 16-year-old male Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) positive patient, diagnosed with HIV 2 years before presentation but was n

Synergistic parasite-pathogen interactions mediated by host immunity can drive the collapse of honeybee colonies.

The health of the honeybee and, indirectly, global crop production are threatened by several biotic and abiotic factors, which play a poorly defined role in the induction of widespread colony losses. Recent descriptive studies suggest that colony losses are often related to the interaction between pathogens and other stress factors, including parasites. Through an integrated analysis of the population and molecular changes associated with the collapse of honeybee colonies infested by the parasitic mite Varroa destructor, we show that this parasite can de-stabilise the within-host dynamics of D

Efficacy of crude neem seed kernel extracts against natural infestation of Sarcoptes scabiei var. ovis.

This study was aimed to evaluate the efficacy of crude aqueous-methanol and aqueous extracts of neem (Azadirachta indica) seed kernel against sarcoptic mange of sheep. Crude aqueous-methanol (AME) and aqueous extracts (AE) of neem seed kernel (NSK) were prepared and formulated as 10% and 20% ointments (w/w), using Vaseline as vehicle. Forty-two lambs of Pak Karakul breed, having natural infection of sarcoptic mange were divided into seven experimental groups. Skin scrapings and clinical examination were carried out at scheduled intervals after treatment. Ivermectin (positive control) completel

Histologic and clinical findings in human scabies.

The epidermal histological findings in the primary scabetic lesion are hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, and spongiotic edema and vesiculation. The dermal changes consist of perivascular and diffuse cell infiltrates, mainly mononuclear cells, and sometimes eosinophilic granulocytes. The number of mast cells are slightly greater in primary scabetic lesions compared with secondary lesions and normal skin. Vasculitis is found in those cases showing tissue eosinophils, severe dermatitis, and many mites. A nodular lesion shows perivascular infiltrates mainly containing histiocytes, some with atypical and

Subungual hyperkeratosis as a diagnostic cue in crusted scabies.

Crusted scabies is a severe and uncommon variant of Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis infestation and typically arises in older adults with impaired cellular immunity. Secondary erythroderma and bacteremia are feared complications that may lead to increased morbidity. Herein, we report a case of crusted scabies with subungual involvement in a 65-year-old man with vascular dementia, schizophrenia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease presenting from an assisted living facility. At presentation, the patient was erythrodermic, alongside diffuse scaling with scattered excoriations and marked pal

From urticaria to mites: a diagnostic turnaround in atypical nodular scabies -a case report.

BACKGROUND: Scabies is a contagious skin infestation caused by Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis, presenting with a wide range of clinical manifestations. Nodular scabies is an uncommon variant that typically affects the genital region. When nodules appear in atypical locations, they may resemble other dermatoses and complicate diagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 56-year-old woman presented with persistent, pruritic nodules on the chest, buttocks, and thighs that clinically resembled papular urticaria. She had previously been treated with topical corticosteroids and antihistamines without improvemen

"The Last of Them": Entomopathogenic Effect of Akanthomyces muscarius on the Scale Insect Pest Toumeyella parvicornis Under Laboratory Conditions, a Potential Biological Control Candidate.

Entomopathogenic fungi are valuable alternatives to traditional agrochemicals, providing more sustainable crop protection. Akanthomyces spp. is acknowledged in biocontrol practices, especially in controlling aphids, thrips, whiteflies, and mites; however, its efficacy on soft scale insects is still poorly known. This study investigates the potential use of Akanthomyces muscarius on the soft scale insect Toumeyella parvicornis, a new invasive pest for European stone pines (Pinus pinea). The strain of A. muscarius tested in the experimentation has been isolated from Parthenolecanium corni, a sof

Crusted Norwegian scabies, an opportunistic infection, with tocilizumab in rheumatoid arthritis.

BACKGROUND: Crusted Norwegian scabies is an extremely rare hyperkeratotic variant of scabies infestation. We report herein a case of crusted scabies in a woman with severe rheumatoid arthritis (RA) treated by tocilizumab (TCZ), a monoclonal antibody blocking the interleukin-6 receptor. OBSERVATION: An 80-year-old female with severe RA developed erythroderma followed by hyperkeratosis, widespread scaling over the trunk, arms, hands and limbs, and crusted lesions on her scalp. She was on TCZ (8 mg/kg per month) with prednisone (20 mg/d). Several hypotheses were evoked (i.e., vasculitis, psorias

Phenotypic plasticity of cyanogenesis in lima bean Phaseolus lunatus-activity and activation of beta-glucosidase.

Cyanogenesis, the release of toxic HCN from damaged plant tissues, is generally considered as a constitutive plant defense. We found phenotypic plasticity of cyanogenesis in young leaves of lima bean Phaseolus lunatus based on increased activity of the beta-glucosidase in response to herbivore attack. Two aspects of plant cyanogenesis have to be considered in ecological analyses: (1) the cyanogenic potential (HCNp), which indicates the total amount of cyanide-containing compounds present in a given tissue, and (2) the cyanogenic capacity (HCNc), representing the release of HCN per unit time. Use of a Randomized Response Technique to obtain sensitive information on animal disease prevalence.

In order for policy-makers to formulate effective disease control measures they require accurate estimates of the extent and prevalence of the disease. On occasion, obtaining these data can be difficult, as farmers may perceive relevant information as being sensitive to divulge. Consequently, underestimation of disease prevalence may occur due to farmer reticence about admitting to behaviours and outcomes that are considered professionally transgressive. To overcome such weaknesses, this study used a novel social science survey method known as the Randomized Response Technique in order to obta

Treatment of human Demodex folliculorum by camphor oil and metronidazole.

A total of 15 females suffering from erythematotelangiectatic rosacea and 12 females free from other dermatological lesions were selected. Demodex folliculorum infestation density in both patients and control were evaluated by non-invasive skin surface biopsies. Five facial sites were selected. The daily topical application of 1/3 diluted camphor oil with glycerol and 500 mg metronidazole orally were given for fifteen days. The results were very successful with no clinical side effects.

Florida red scale Chrysomphalus aonidum (Hemiptera: Diaspididae) and parasitoid Aphytis melinus (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) colonization of Citrus Under Protective Screen.

The Citrus Under Protective Screen is a novel production system implemented to grow citrus free of huanglongbing disease vectored by Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri. Other significant pests such as mites, scales, thrips, mealybugs, and leafminers, as well as parasitoids and small predators, have been identified from Citrus Under Protective Screen and require management. Chrysomphalus aonidum (L.), an armored scale is a major pest of citrus. We determined the incidence of C. aonidum and parasitoid Aphytis melinus in 4-quarter-acre Citrus Under Protective Screen structures and open-air co

Ecto- and endoparasite induce similar chemical and brain neurogenomic responses in the honey bee (Apis mellifera).

BACKGROUND: Exclusion from a social group is an effective way to avoid parasite transmission. This type of social removal has also been proposed as a form of collective defense, or social immunity, in eusocial insect groups. If parasitic modification of host behavior is widespread in social insects, the underlying physiological and neuronal mechanisms remain to be investigated. We studied this phenomenon in honey bees parasitized by the mite Varroa destructor or microsporidia Nosema ceranae, which make bees leave the hive precociously. We characterized the chemical, behavioral and neurogenomic

Sarcoptic mange: An emerging panzootic in wildlife.

Sarcoptic mange, a skin infestation caused by the mite Sarcoptes scabiei, is an emerging disease for some species of wildlife, potentially jeopardizing their welfare and conservation. Sarcoptes scabiei has a near-global distribution facilitated by its forms of transmission and use of a large diversity of host species (many of those with broad geographic distribution). In this review, we synthesize the current knowledge concerning the geographic and host taxonomic distribution of mange in wildlife, the epidemiological connections between species, and the potential threat of sarcoptic mange for
