Associations of nutrition knowledge with dietary preferences, symptom burden, and quality of life in women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a complex endocrine disorder in which lifestyle-related factors are closely linked to symptom burden and quality of life. Although nutrition knowledge is frequently emphasized in PCOS management, its association with symptom severity and quality of life remains unclear. This web-based analytical cross-sectional study examined associations between nutrition knowledge, diet-related preferences, lifestyle behaviors, symptom burden, and quality of life among 330 Turkish women aged 18-45 years with a self-reported physician diagnosis of PCOS. Nutrition knowledge

Nutritional screening and extraglandular manifestations in Sjögren disease: a cross-sectional study using the controlling nutritional status score and prognostic nutritional index.

BACKGROUND: Sjögren disease (SjD) is an autoimmune disorder marked by exocrine gland dysfunction and systemic extraglandular manifestations (EGM). While nutritional status plays a key role in chronic diseases, its association with EGM in SjD remains underexplored. AIMS: This study aims to evaluate the nutritional status of patients with SjD using two validated tools the Controlling Nutritional Status (CONUT) score and the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI) and to examine their relationship with EGM. METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 113 patients diagnosed with SjD, categor

The Emerging Role of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Imaging in the Evaluation of Metabolic Cardiomyopathies.

The aim of this review is to discuss the role of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (CMR) in the diagnosis, risk stratification, and follow-up of metabolic cardiomyopathies. The classification of myocardial diseases, proposed by WHO/ISFC task force, distinguished specific cardiomyopathies, caused by metabolic disorders, into 4 types: 1) endocrine disorders, 2) storage or infiltration disorders (amyloidosis, hemochromatosis and familial storage disorders), 3) nutritional disorders (Kwashiorkor, beri-beri, obesity, and alcohol), and 4) diabetic heart. Thyroid disease, pheochromocytoma, and growth

Addressing nutritional issues and eating behaviours among university students: a narrative review.

University life is a critical period for establishing healthy eating habits and attitudes. However, university students are at risk of developing poor eating habits due to various factors, including economic conditions, academic stress and lack of information about nutritional concepts. Poor diet quality leads to malnutrition or overnutrition, increasing the risk of preventable diseases. Food environments on university campuses also play a significant role in shaping the dietary habits of students, with the availability of and accessibility to healthy food options being important factors influ

The Nutrient-Skin Connection: Diagnosing Eating Disorders Through Dermatologic Signs.

The interplay between nutrition and skin health provides a crucial lens for understanding, diagnosing, and managing eating disorders (EDs) such as anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge-eating disorder (BED). This review explores the dermatological manifestations resulting from the nutritional deficiencies commonly associated with EDs, including conditions like hair loss, xerosis, and brittle nails. These changes in the skin and its appendages often reflect deeper systemic dysfunctions, such as deficiencies in essential micronutrients (zinc, iron, and vitamins A and C), hormona

Tropical spastic paraparesis.

A large number of causative agents can result in spinal cord disorders in the tropics including etiologies similar to those of temperate regions such as trauma, spinal bone and disc lesions, tumors, epidural abscess, and congenital malformations. Yet infectious and nutritional disorders differ in their higher prevalence in tropical regions including Pott's disease; brucellosis; neuroborreliosis; various parasitic diseases such as schistosomiasis, neurocysticercosis, and eosinophilic meningitis. Notably, the retrovirus HTLV-1 is the causeof tropical spastic paraparesis/paraplegia or TSP. Nutrit

Long-latency deficiency disease: insights from calcium and vitamin D.

Nutrient intake recommendations and national nutritional policies have focused primarily on prevention of short-latency deficiency diseases. Most nutrient intake recommendations today are based on prevention of the index disease only. However, inadequate intakes of many nutrients are now recognized as contributing to several of the major chronic diseases that affect the populations of the industrialized nations. Often taking many years to manifest themselves, these disease outcomes should be thought of as long-latency deficiency diseases. Sometimes they come about by the same pathophysiologic

[Polyneuropathies during prolonged stays in resuscitation].

Extensive multiple neuropathies were observed in four patients after prolonged stay in intensive care units. Date of onset of the multiple disorders was difficult to determine due to disturbed consciousness of all patients during the first few weeks of intensive care: it was probably between the 10th and 30th days. Electrophysiological examinations in the 4 patients, and ultrastructural study of musculocutaneous nerve of leg in 2 cases, suggested an acute axonal lesion. All patients survived the causal affection which had justified prolonged intensive care, 3 recovering from the multiple neuro

Dietary counselling plus omega-3 supplementation in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder: protocol for a randomized wait-list controlled pilot trial (the "EASe-GAD Trial").

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are prevalent and disabling conditions involving excessive worry and tension. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), the most common anxiety disorder, affects 5% of individuals from high-income countries and many individuals report that treatment options are not accessible, effective, or tolerable. Clinical evidence suggests that nutrition interventions, based on the Mediterranean diet and supplementation of omega-3 fatty acids, can significantly improve symptoms of depression; however, the effect of nutrition interventions on anxiety symptoms has not been studied in

Nutrition and sports performance.

During the past 20 years there have been great developments in the scientific understanding of the role of nutrition in health and physical performance. Epidemiological and physiological studies have provided evidence that certain forms of dietary behaviour may be linked with an increased risk of developing disorders such as high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and some cancers. This has resulted in dietary recommendations that are intended to reduce the incidence of these disorders in the community. The science of nutrition in relation to sports performance has progressed from empiric

Believe Your Patient Who Denies Alcohol Dependence/Celiac Disease as a Cause of Wernicke Encephalopathy.

We describe a patient admitted with altered mental status and nutritional deficiency who was misdiagnosed with Wernicke Encephalopathy. Subsequently, as an outpatient, she was diagnosed with Celiac disease (CeD) following extensive neurologic workup. While CeD and other gluten-associated disorders are typically associated with gastrointestinal symptoms, patients may also present with neurologic symptoms, such as altered mental status, ataxia, and encephalopathy. Once a gluten-free diet was initiated along with nutritional supplements, the patient's mental status gradually improved. Given CeD's

The Use of Nutritional Psychiatry in the Treatment of a Patient With Treatment-resistant Depression: A Biopsychosocial Case Report.

This case study describes a 30-year-old patient with recurrent depressive disorder and pharmacological treatment resistance. After 2 courses of electroconvulsive therapy without significant improvement, the illness was classified as treatment-refractory. A comprehensive nutrient analysis and dietary history identified malnutrition, nutrient deficiencies, and gastrointestinal issues. By supplementing the treatment-as-usual approach with personalized nutritional and nutrient therapy, a significant reduction in depressive symptoms was achieved, and the pharmacological medication could be reduced.

General Approach to Weakness.

Weakness is a challenging and broad chief complaint in emergency medicine, necessitating rapid and accurate differentiation among numerous etiologies. Effective diagnosis involves recognizing symptoms of central and peripheral neurologic disorders, neuromuscular junction diseases, nutritional deficiencies, and toxin exposures. Prompt identification and intervention in conditions such as Guillain-Barré syndrome, transverse myelitis, botulism, and nutritional deficiencies are crucial. Despite vaccines reducing cases of polio, tetanus, and diphtheria, vigilance remains essential due to their pote

A Comprehensive Review of Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis and Other Methods in the Assessment of Nutritional Status in Patients with Liver Cirrhosis.

It is assumed that approximately 24-66% of patients with liver cirrhosis develop malnutrition. Numerous pathological processes lead to serious disorders of nutritional status in this group of patients. Malnutrition in the course of liver cirrhosis is associated with increased morbidity, complications, and low quality of life. Under these conditions, detection of malnutrition is of crucial importance. This review explores the complex mechanisms that lead to malnutrition in the course of liver cirrhosis and focuses on methods used in the assessment of nutritional status in cirrhotic patients. Am

Hyperemesis gravidarum.

Hyperemesis gravidarum is a poorly understood disorder and one for which many physicians have little sympathy, perhaps because we find it difficult to understand its pathogenesis and to treat. It may be associated with dysfunction in a variety of organs, including the thyroid and liver. Many theories, prominently including psychological or behavioral abnormalities, have been proposed to explicate this syndrome. On examination, however, no single theory seems to provide an adequate explanation for hyperemesis gravidarum. Treatment for hyperemesis gravidarum includes fluid and electrolyte supple

The biology of folate in depression: implications for nutritional hypotheses of the psychoses.

Folate deficiency is a common occurrence in psychiatric disorders, whether organic or functional, particularly in depressive illness. We have shown that folate deficiency is a common association of depressive symptoms in a variety of settings including primary endogenous or non-endogenous depression, and in alcoholic, lithium-treated and anorexic patients. Possible pathogenetic mediating mechanisms for this association are methylation and hydroxylation and the implications for nutritional hypotheses of the psychoses are discussed. We suggest that folate deficiency, with or without deficiencies
