Influence of foods and nutrients on COVID-19 recovery: A multivariate analysis of data from 170 countries using a generalized linear model.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: COVID-19 is an emergency public health problem of global importance. This study aimed to investigate the effect of foods … OVID-19: eggs, fish and seafood, fruits, meat, milk, starchy roots, stimulants, vegetable products, nuts, vegetable oil and vegetables. In general, consumption of higher levels of proteins and lipids had a positive effect on COVID-19 recovery, whereas high consumption of alcoholic beverages had a negative effect. In developed countries, where hunger ha …

Maternal periconceptional nutrition matters. A scoping review of the current literature.

BACKGROUND: The importance of nutrition in reproductive health is widely acknowledged with special emphasis given to periconceptional matern … rth, hypertensive disorders, and gestational diabetes. Similar dietary patterns rich in vegetables, nuts, fish, and cereals increase the likelihood of conception and have a protective action, mediated by their antioxidant properties, against orofacial clefts, congenital heart and limb defects in the progeny. Conversely, the pro-inflammatory features of …

This cross-sectional study used National Heal … ith multiple foods, including fish/seafood, wine, rice, vegetables/vegetable oil, liquor, and beans/nuts/soy. Among non-seafood consumers, higher THg was significantly associated with mixed rice dishes, vegetables/vegetable oil, liquor, and approached statistical significance with wine (p < 0.10); higher MeHg was significantly associated with wine and …

Neanderthal behaviour, diet, and disease inferred from ancient DNA in dental calculus.

Recent genomic data have revealed multiple interactions between Neanderthals and modern humans, but there is currently little genetic eviden … d in the diet of Neanderthals from El Sidrón cave, Spain, and dietary components of mushrooms, pine nuts, and moss reflected forest gathering. Differences in diet were also linked to an overall shift in the oral bacterial community (microbiota) and suggested that meat consumption contributed to substantial variation within Neanderthal microbiota. Transcriptome and Metabolite Changes during Hydrogen Cyanamide-Induced Floral Bud Break in Sweet Cherry.

Release of bud dormancy in perennial woody plants is a temperature-dependent process and thus flowering in these species is heavily affected by climate change. The lack of cold winters in temperate growing regions often results in reduced flowering and low fruit yields. This is likely to decrease the availability of fruits and nuts of the Prunus spp. in the near future. In order to maintain high yields, it is crucial to gain detailed knowledge on the molecular mechanisms controlling the release of bud dormancy. Here, we studied these mechanisms using sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.), a crop wher…

Ige-mediated food allergy - current problems and future perspectives (review).

The incidence and prevalence of FA have changed over time, and many studies have indeed suggested a true rise in prevalence over the past 10-20 years. Recent studies showed that prevalence of self-reported food allergy is 17, 3%, versus challenged confirmed - 0.9%. The majority of allergic reactions to foods, particularly in children, are suggested to be caused primarily by eight foods, namely cow's milk, egg, wheat, soy, peanut, tree nuts, fish, and shellfish. Clinical symptoms of FA include skin, gastrointestinal and systemic reaction anaphylaxis that might be life-threatening and cause fata…

Does management really work?

HBR's 90th anniversary is a sensible time to revisit a basic question: Are organizations more likely to succeed if they adopt good managemen … ng the basics yields big improvements in outcomes such as productivity and longevity, and that good nuts-and-bolts management at individual firms shapes national performance. At 14 textile manufacturers in India, for example, an intervention--involving free, high-quality advice from a consultant who was on-site half-time for five months--cut defects by …

Low-fat dairy products, purine-rich vegetables, whole grains, nuts and legumes, and less sugary fruits, coffee and vitamin C supplements decrease the risk, whereas intake of red meat, fructose-containing beverages and alcohol increase the risk of gout. The optimal diagnostic workup for children with suspected food allergy.

Food allergy is defined as an abnormal immunologic reaction to food proteins that causes an adverse clinical reaction. In addition to well-known acute allergic reactions and anaphylaxis triggered by immunoglobulin E antibody-mediated immune responses to food proteins, there is an increasing recognition of cell-mediated disorders such as eosinophilic esophagitis and food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome. More than 90% of food allergies in childhood are caused by eight foods: cow's milk, hen's egg, soy, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, fish, and shellfish. The diagnostic workup for a child with …

The effect of high-fat diet on plasma ghrelin and leptin levels in rats.

Ghrelin and leptin regulate appetite and energy homeostasis in humans and rodents. The effects of different nutritional factors on ghrelin and leptin secretion are not well documented in rats. Therefore, the aim of our study was to investigate the effect of a high-fat diet on plasma ghrelin and leptin levels and on adiposity. Twenty male Wistar rats, body weight 220-260 g, were used in the study. Rats were randomized either on a standard chow diet (n=10) or on a high-fat diet (a mixture of nuts) for ad libitum 11-week period. Body weight was measured once per week. At the end of the nutritiona…

Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) in clinical practice: a primary care experience.

BACKGROUND: The Sixth Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure placed increased emphasis on lifestyle modification for the prevention and management of hypertension. The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, rich in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and low-fat dairy foods, with reduced saturated and total fats, was found in clinical trials to lower blood pressure substantially and significantly. The DASH diet appears appropriate for use in the primary care setting, although it is unknown whether results will mirro…

Recycling of hazelnut waste: Antidiabetic properties of soy lecithin nanoparticles and their in vitro anti-proliferative effects in tumor cell lines.

BACKGROUND: Hazelnuts and foods produced using hazelnuts are consumed with pleasure, but it is important to evaluate the waste generated during hazelnut processing and determine their usage methods. RESULTS: This study was conducted to determine the changes in bioactive components, bioaccessibility and antidiabetic activity of nanoparticles synthesized using soy lecithin from hazelnut wastes. The shell-derived nanoparticles had the highest zeta potential (-38.62 mV), and the smallest particle size and polydispersity index values. The production efficiency of nanoparticles was in the range of …

A Growing Concern for Cashew and an Unexpected Risk From Almonds: Data From the Anaphylaxis Registry.

BACKGROUND: Food allergies are a major health concern with rising prevalence. Dietary habits are changing, and information about cashew-induced anaphylaxis is limited. RESULTS: 1389 cases of TIA out of 5945 registered food-induced reactions (23%) were identified. 1,083 cases with confirmed elicitor status, including 845 children (median age 4 years, 61% male) and 238 adults (38 years, 40% male), were selected for further analysis. The necessity of enzymatically hydrolyzing walnut protein to exert antihypertensive activity based on in vitro simulated digestion and in vivo verification.

Since not all proteins are suitable for preparing bioactive peptides by enzymatic degradation, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the necessity of walnut protein (WP) enzymolysis to exert its potential antihypertensive activity. Five proteases were used to hydrolyze WP to produce WP hydrolysate (WPH) enzymatically. The angiotensin-I-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity of WP and WPH before and after simulated digestion in vitro was measured, and the antihypertensive effect was evaluated in vivo. The results showed that after simulated digestion in vitro, the ACE inhibitory activit
