Medial malleolus fracture is traditionally performed via an open approach. However, significant drawbacks such as exfoliated soft tissue injury, infection, prolonged recovery periods have been reported. Recently, arthroscopy-assisted reduction percutaneous internal fixation (ARPF) demonstrates advantages in minimizing soft tissue damage, improving joint visualization, and enhancing postoperative recovery, however, robust comparative evidence remains sparse on the efficacy of ARPF versus open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) in treating medial malleolus fractures. The current study provid

BACKGROUND: The objective was to compare postoperative complications in the management of displaced intra articular calcaneal fractures (DIACF) between two groups; the open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) group versus the percutaneous fixation (PF) group.
METHODS: A total of 243 DIACFs were diagnosed and 127 of them received operations either with ORIF 75 (59.1 %) or PF 52 (40.9 %) between 2004 and 2018. Postoperative complications, radiological Sanders's classification and improvement of Böhler's angle were analyzed.
RESULTS: Early complication rate (<6 weeks), rate of deep wound inf

BACKGROUND: Adult isolated ulnar shaft fractures (IUSF) are rare. There remains a need to establish the best methods to manage these fractures. The aim of this study was to compare two forms of treatment for IUSF: intramedullary stabilization by k-wire (IMF) versus Open Reduction Internal Fixation by plating (ORIF), in order to identify differences in clinical (1) and radiological outcomes (2), as well as comparative costs (3).
HYPOTHESIS: The hypothesis of this study was assessing whether intramedullary stabilization was as feasible as plating in the treatment of isolated ulnar shaft fractur

Radial head and neck fractures are one of the most common elbow fractures, comprising 2% to 5% of all fractures, and 30% of elbow fractures. Although uncomplicated Mason type I fractures can be managed nonsurgically, Mason type II-IV fractures require additional intervention. Mason type II-III fractures with 3 or fewer fragments are typically treated with open reduction and internal fixation using 2 to 3 lag screws. Transverse radial neck involvement or axial instability with screw-only fixation has historically required the additional use of a mini fragment T-plate or locking proximal radius

INTRODUCTION: This meta-analysis was performed to determine whether the arthroscopically assisted open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for ankle fractures is more beneficial than the conventional ORIF.
METHODS: Articles in electronic medial databases were searched between March 1983 and August 2016, including Pubmed and SCOPUS. We included the studies with comparative design comparing the surgical outcomes between the arthroscopically assisted ORIF for ankle fractures and the conventional ORIF. Finally, two RCTs and two retrospective comparative studies were included for analysis. Mean

Anatomic restoration of the joint is the goal of management in fractures about the ankle. Open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) is the standard of care for unstable ankle fractures; however, arthroscopic management has been proposed. The use of arthroscopic reduction and internal fixation (ARIF) is surgeon-dependent. Reported indications for ARIF include transchondral talar dome fracture, talar fracture, low-grade fracture of the distal tibia, syndesmotic disruption, malleolar fracture, and chronic pain following definitive management of fracture about the ankle. Among the potential bene

From an anatomical study and clinical review of fractures of the lateral humeral condyle in children, the following conclusions are drawn. The mechanism of injury is a violent varus force with the elbow in extension, the condyle being avulsed by the lateral ligament and the extensor muscles. If the fracture is incomplete, with an intact hinge of pre-osseous cartilage medially, the fragment will not be displaced. If the fracture is complete the fragment may be displaced, and open reduction with internal fixation is mandatory. The results of open reduction more than three weeks after the fractur

INTRODUCTION: Scapular glenoid fractures are rare, accounting for approximately 0.1% of all fractures. Because of their morphological diversity and complex anatomy, selecting an optimal surgical approach remains challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of a "fragment-specific management" strategy, in which the surgical approach was selected according to the fragment location and morphology of scapular glenoid fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 15 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation for scapular glenoid fractures bet

BACKGROUND: Sudden, forced hyperextension injuries to the proximal interphalangeal joint leading to volar plate avulsion fractures are common hand injuries in children. Suboptimal management of these fractures can lead to the development of long-term complications such as stiffness and flexion contracture.
METHODS: MEDLINE (PubMed), Scopus, Embase, Google Scholar, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases were systematically searched, and additional studies were found through reference of articles up to June 15, 2023. Identified articles were assessed using predetermined inclusion/exclusion criteria.

BACKGROUND: There is no consensus whether the primary surgical method should be open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) or primary arthrodesis (PA) for Lisfranc injuries. The aim of our randomized controlled trial was to compare ORIF and PA for displaced Lisfranc injuries.
METHODS: This study was a national multicenter randomized controlled trial. Altogether 43 displaced Lisfranc injuries were enrolled in this trial. The primary outcome measure was Visual Analogue Scale Foot and Ankle (VAS-FA) at a 24-months follow-up. The secondary outcome measures were VAS-FA pain, function, and other c

RATIONALE: Distal radius fracture with simultaneous ipsilateral radial head fracture is a very rare pattern of injury. This type of injury is referred to as 'radius bipolar fracture'. Treatments for this injury pattern can be challenging because both the wrist and elbow need to be considered. There are currently no guidelines for the treatment of this specific type of injury. We report two cases of this unusual pattern of injury treated in our hospital.
PATIENT CONCERNS: Case 1 was a 78-year-old female patient and case 2 was a 19-year-old female patient who visited our emergency department wi

Background: Displaced pediatric radial neck fractures are challenging injuries. Adequate reduction can be difficult to achieve via closed methods. Open reduction has been associated with avascular necrosis and growth arrest due to soft tissue stripping during surgery. We describe a modified technique that adopts lessons learned from subcapital realignment procedures of the proximal femur, prioritising preservation of the periosteal sleeve with the aim of reducing complications associated with open reduction. Methods: The modified technique includes visualisation of the radial neck fracture thr

A retrospective review was performed on industrial patients who sustained calcaneal fractures within the State of Idaho during the years 1992 to 1994, and these patients were insured by the Idaho State Insurance Fund. Of 48 calcaneal fractures that occurred during this period, 18 were non-displaced extra-articular fractures and 30 were displaced intra-articular fractures. An independent evaluator contacted each patient and performed chart reviews regarding the work history, period of time off work, and cost incurred with the injury. A total of 24 primary surgical procedures were performed on p

BACKGROUND: Based on the location and size of the fracture block, open reduction and internal fixation can be employed or assisted for shoulder arthroscopy in the treatment of glenoid fractures. However, the treatment of lower part of glenoid fractures through a novel axillary approach has not been reported so far.
CASE SUMMARY: A 22-year-old right-handed man was transferred to our outpatient clinic because of right shoulder injury during a traffic accident. X-ray examination after admission suggested the fracture of the lower part of the right glenoid and an ipiselial proximal humeral fractu

A retrospective study of 26 cases of supramalleolar fracture is presented. Types II and III were most common. All but the one had accompanying fibular fracture. The incidence of open fracture was 41.7% (10/24). The most common mechanism of injury was a high energy impacting force in the direction of axial compression. The supramalleolar fracture was subgrouped into four types. Twenty patients were treated by closed reduction and cast immobilization for an average of five months, six by open reduction and internal fixation, and two by skeletal traction in the early course of treatment. Of the 2

CASE: A 10-year-old boy presented with a Salter-Harris II distal radius fracture that was irreducible by closed methods. An open reduction was performed in the operating room where a sleeve of periosteum was found interposed between the fracture fragments. Successful reduction was performed without difficulty after the periosteum was removed from the fracture.
CONCLUSION: Soft-tissue interposition must be kept in mind when having difficulty performing closed reductions of pediatric distal radius physeal fractures to avoid excessive reduction attempts.

➤: Multiple studies comparing nonoperative and operative treatment for displaced proximal humeral fractures in the geriatric population have demonstrated minimal differences in functional outcomes. Factors such as surgeon experience as well as the quality and maintenance of the reduction may influence operative outcomes, and their impact on these findings merits further investigation.
➤: In the treatment of 2 and 3-part fractures involving the surgical neck, intramedullary nailing has demonstrated functional outcomes that are comparable with those of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the radial neck represent about 1% of all childhood fractures and 5% to 10% of childhood traumatic lesions involving the elbow. Management of these fractures in children is still controversial. Intramedullary percutaneous nail reduction (Métaizeau technique) is considered the most effective surgical technique because of its excellent results and easy learning curve. Complications may arise, however, especially in Böhler technique, in which a percutaneous pin is placed over the radial head. When this technique does not provide correct reduction, open reduction must be p
