Spread tools: a systematic review of components, uptake, and effectiveness of quality improvement toolkits.

BackgroundThe objective was to conduct a systematic review of toolkit evaluations intended to spread interventions to improve healthcare quality. We aimed to determine the components, uptake, and effectiveness of publicly available toolkits.MethodsWe searched PubMed, CINAHL, and the Web of Science from 2005 to May 2018 for evaluations of publicly available toolkits, used a forward search of known toolkits, screened references, and contacted topic experts. Two independent reviewers screened publications for inclusion. One reviewer abstracted data and appraised the studies, checked by a second r

Bringing Feedback in From the Outback via a Generic and Preference-Sensitive Instrument for Course Quality Assessment.

BACKGROUND: Much effort and many resources have been put into developing ways of eliciting valid and informative student feedback on courses in medical, nursing, and other health professional schools. Whatever their motivation, items, and setting, the response rates have usually been disappointingly low, and there seems to be an acceptance that the results are potentially biased. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the study was to look at an innovative approach to course assessment by students in the health professions. This approach was designed to make it an integral part of their educational expe

Integrating Gait Analysis and AI Into Knee Osteoarthritis Care: Protocol for a 3-Phase Participatory Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (OA) leads to pain, disability, and reduced quality of life. For advanced stages, knee arthroplasty surgery is the standard treatment, yet dissatisfaction and persistent mobility deficits remain common. Current surgical decision-making processes seldom incorporate objective predictors of outcomes, such as biomechanical data. Advances in computer vision, wearable sensors, and artificial intelligence now enable efficient capture and interpretation of clinically prognostic gait features in real-world settings. However, the clinical adoption of such innovations rema

[Primary role of public health management centers in patient safety].

Objectives In 2023, the Kobe City Public Health Management Center (KCPHMC) conducted an extraordinary on-site inspection based on the Medical Care Act and provided administrative guidance after a whistleblower report regarding Hospital A. However, owing to repeated legal violations, the KCPHMC eventually issued an improvement measure. In this study, we evaluated the various steps of the interventions implemented by the KCPHMC to establish a patient safety management system (PSMS), clarified the role of a public health management center, and identified the remaining unresolved issues. Methods A

Ovarian cancer presentation and management in sub-Saharan Africa: a scooping review protocal.

INTRODUCTION: Ovarian cancer is a leading gynecological malignancy mortality globally. Clinical outcomes in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are poor, largely due to late-stage presentation and limited accessing to effective treatment options. Referral pathways also delay diagnosis and compromise delivery of guideline-concordant care. A comprehensive mapping of evidence on ovarian cancer presentation and management across SSA is needed to characterize what is known, where evidence is concentrated, and where critical gaps persist. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This protocol describes a systematic scoping revi

Cross-Sectional Survey to Assess Hospital System Readiness for Hemorrhage During and After Cesarean Delivery in Africa.

BACKGROUND: Mothers in Africa are 50 times more likely to die after cesarean delivery (CD) than in high-income countries, largely due to hemorrhage. It is unclear whether countries across Africa are adequately equipped to prevent and treat postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) during and after CD. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional survey of anesthesiologists and obstetricians across the African Perioperative Research Group (APORG). The primary objective was to determine readiness of the hospital system to implement the World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for prevention and treatment of PP

Response audit of an Internet survey of health care providers and administrators: implications for determination of response rates.

BACKGROUND: Internet survey modalities often compare unfavorably with traditional survey modalities, particularly with respect to response rates. Response to Internet surveys can be affected by the distribution options and response/collection features employed as well as the existence of automated (out-of-office) replies, automated forwarding, server rejection, and organizational or personal spam filters. However, Internet surveys also provide unparalleled opportunities to track study subjects and examine many of the factors influencing the determination of response rates. Tracking data availa

Measuring residents' perceptions of social-ecological healthy communities: development and initial psychometric evaluation of a multidimensional scale.

INTRODUCTION: Effective community health promotion requires information about residents' health-related characteristics and the interpersonal, environmental, organizational, and policy supports they perceive. The Multidimensional Assessment Scale for Social-Ecological Healthy Communities MASE-HC was designed as a multidimensional resident-reported instrument, not as a unidimensional measure or an objective community-level rating. We report its development and initial psychometric evaluation. METHODS: Items were generated through literature review, a two-round Delphi survey, content-validity a

Implementing Integrated Whole-Person Care for Chronic Pain: Lessons from VA's Multisite wHOPE Study.

BACKGROUND: Guidelines recommend multimodal, biopsychosocial care for chronic pain, but implementing this care on a large scale can be challenging. Recently, the Whole Health Options and Pain Education (wHOPE) study implemented and evaluated a Whole Health Team (WHT) intervention at six VA medical centers across the USA. WHT is an interdisciplinary team composed of a medical provider, a complementary and integrative health (CIH) provider, and a health coach who together provide holistic, non-pharmacological pain care. In a randomized controlled clinical trial of 764 VA patients with chronic pa

Evaluation of the implementation process of POC-CRP devices in managing adults with cough in general practice: insights from a focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Although acute respiratory tract infections are typically self-limiting, general practitioners (GPs) frequently prescribe antibiotics. C-reactive protein (CRP) point-of-care testing (POCT) has been shown to significantly reduce antibiotic prescribing and is cost-effective for adults with acute cough. However, before nationwide implementation in Belgium, organizational barriers must be addressed. AIM: to explore GPs’ experiences in a pilot project, using POC-CRP devices in general practice for adults with acute cough. METHODS: Following a national CRP POCT pilot study, four multidis
