Air pollution in Iran: The current status and potential solutions.

Air pollution has been integrated into global challenges over the last few years due to its negative impact on the health of human beings, i … rs. Many large cities in Iran surpass the permissible concentration of air pollutants, particularly particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, black carbon, and ozone. Although regulations and policies are in place and enormous efforts are being made to address air pollution issues in the country, implementation and enforcement are not as effective as they could be. The si …

Evaluation the in vivo behaviors of PM2.5 in rats using noninvasive PET imaging with mimic particles.

Inhaled PM2.5 particles is harmful to human health. However, real-time tracking of PM2.5 particles and dynamic evaluation of the pharmacokinetic behaviors in vivo are still challenging. Here, PET imaging is utilized to noninvasively monitor the in vivo behavior of PM2.5 particles in rats. To mimic aerosol PM2.5 particles suspended in ambient air, 89Zr-labeled melanin nanoparticles (89Zr-MNP) are nebulized into microscopic liquid particles with a mean size of 2.5 μm. Then, the 89Zr-labeled PM2.5 mimic particles (89Zr-PM2.5) are administrated into rats via inhalation. PET imaging showed that 89Z

Leisure-time physical activity mitigated the cognitive effect of PM2.5 and PM2.5 components exposure: Evidence from a nationwide longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) impairs cognition, while physical activity (PA) improves cognitive function. However, whether taking PA with PM2.5 exposure is still beneficial to cognition remains unknown. METHODS: We utilized national representative longitudinal data from the China Family Panel Study (CFPS), comprising a total sample of 108,099 from 2010 to 2018 in three waves. Cognitive performance and leisure-time PA were measured using the standard cognitive module and Godin-Shephard Leisure-Time Physical Activity Questionnaire. Gridded overall PM2.5 and major chem…

Regional classification of high PM10 concentrations in the Seoul metropolitan and Chungcheongnam-do areas, Republic of Korea.

Since the Seoul metropolitan area is a highly developed megacity, many people are often exposed to high concentrations of particulate matter (PM), with mean aerodynamic diameters equal to or less than 10 μm (PM10), in cold seasons. PM10 concentrations can be influenced by a combination of various factors, including meteorological conditions, anthropogenic emissions, atmospheric chemical reactions, transboundary transport, and geographic characteristics. However, the establishment of an efficient air quality management plan remains challenging due to the limited understanding of the regional PM…

A comparison of cigarette smoke test matrices and their responsiveness in the mouse lymphoma assay: A case study.

No cigarette smoke test matrix is without limitation, due to the complexity of the starting aerosol and phase to phase dynamics. It is impossible to capture all chemicals at the same level of efficiency, therefore, any test matrix will inadvertently or by design fractionate the test aerosol. This case study examines how four different test matrices derived from cigarette smoke can be directly compared. The test matrices assessed were as follows, total particulate matter (TPM), gas vapour phase (GVP), a combination of TPM + GVP and whole aerosol (WA). Here we use an example assay, the mouse lym…

Exposure characteristics of ultrafine particles on urban streets and its impact on pedestrians.

In order to investigate the pedestrian exposure characteristics of ultrafine particles (UFPs) on urban streets, both mobile and fixed-point monitoring experiments were conducted. A generalized additive model and a respiratory deposition dose model were used to quantify the influencing factors and potential harm of UFPs, respectively. The results showed that UFPs' hotspots were more likely to manifest at places where vehicles tend to cluster, namely at road intersections and bus stops. The pedestrian bridge had the lowest number concentration of UFPs in comparison with the pedestrian crossing a

Recognition and Health Impacts of Organic Pollutants with Significantly Different Proportions in the Gas Phase and Size-Fractionated Particulate Phase in Ambient Air.

The distributions of organic pollutants in the gas phase and size-fractionated particle phases can largely affect human health risks posed by them. Gas-particle partitioning and particle-size distributions of some known pollutants have been investigated. However, the pollutants which are more likely to enter the human body and cause strong adverse effects may be neglected. In this study, a nontargeted screening approach combining comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography with time-of-flight mass spectrometry and chemometrics was developed. Eighty-eight compounds with markedly different

PM2.5-mediated photochemical reaction of typical toluene in real air matrix with identification of products by isotopic tracing and FT-ICR MS.

The sight into photoconversion of toluene, a ubiquitous typical pollutant, attentively by the involvement of PM2.5 in the real air environment is crucial for controlling haze pollution. Compared with the large-size PM2.5 on normal day (PM2.5-ND), the PM2.5 on haze day (PM2.5-HD) formed of small particle agglomerates featured greater oxidation capability, evidenced by the valence distribution of sulfur species. Notably, PM2.5-HD had abundant O2-• and •OH and participated in the photochemical reaction of toluene, giving it a greater toluene conversion with a first-order kinetic rate constant of

The impact of PM2.5 on kidney.

PM2.5 poses a severe risk to kidneys, inducing kidney function decline, increasing the risk of suffering from chronic kidney diseases and promoting the occurrence and development of various renal tumors. The mechanism of PM2.5-induced renal injury may involve oxidative stress, inflammatory response, and cytotoxicity. This paper elaborated PM2.5-induced kidney damage and the corresponding possible mechanism so as to raise awareness of air pollution and reduce the damage to human body.

Ambient acidic ultrafine particles in different land-use areas in two representative Chinese cities.

The adverse effects of acidic ultrafine particles (AUFPs) have been widely recognized in scientific communities. However, a handful of studies successfully acquired the concentrations of AUFPs in the atmosphere. To explore the AUFPs pollution, six extensive measurements were for the first time conducted in the roadside, urban and rural areas in Hong Kong, and the urban area in Shanghai between 2017 and 2020. The concentrations of AUFPs and UFPs, and the proportions of AUFPs in UFPs were obtained. The concentration of UFPs was the highest at the roadside site, followed by the urban site and the

How to prevent skin damage from air pollution part 2: Current treatment options.

In the first part of this review, we have summarized the methods used to examine skin exposure to air pollution and the fundamental concept of skin-exposome interactions. Part 2 of this review focuses on dermatoses, whose aggravation or initiation by air pollution has been confirmed in evidence based medicine manner. Based on the model of photodermatology and photodermatoses, we propose a new concept of "polludermatoses." A key feature of this concept is identifying patients at risk, which will reveal the noxious effects of air pollutants on skin health. Identifying clinical signs of pollution

Polycyclic Aromatic Carbon: A Key Fraction Determining the Light Absorption Properties of Methanol-Soluble Brown Carbon of Open Biomass Burning Aerosols.

The composition and radiative forcing of light-absorbing brown carbon (BrC) aerosol remain poorly understood. Polycyclic aromatics (PAs) are BrC chromophores with fused benzene rings. Understanding the occurrence and significance of PAs in BrC is challenging due to a lack of standards for many PAs. In this study, we quantified polycyclic aromatic carbon (PAC), defined as the carbon of fused benzene rings, based on molecular markers (benzene polycarboxylic acids, BPCAs). Open biomass burning aerosols (OBBAs) of 22 rainforest plants were successively extracted with water and methanol for the ana

NO2 catalytic formation, consumption, and efflux in various types of diesel particulate filter.

The high NO2/NOX ratio in the after-treatment system is beneficial to its performance and achieved by NO catalytic conversion in diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) located upstream (CRDPF), catalytic DPF (CDPF), or a combination of both (CCDPF). In order to effectively control the emission of particulates and nitrogen oxides, various types of diesel particulate filter models are established to compare NO2 catalytic formation, consumption, and efflux. The results show that the catalytic performance of NO conversion is limited by mass transfer in DOC catalytic coating, while it is almost non-existe

Developing air pollution concentration fields for health studies using multiple methods: Cross-comparison and evaluation.

Past air pollution epidemiological studies have used a wide range of methods to develop concentration fields for health analyses. The fields developed differ considerably among these methods. The reasons for these differences and comparisons of their strengths, as well as the limitations for estimating exposures, remains under-investigated. Here, we applied nine methods to develop fields of eight pollutants (carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), fine particulate matter (PM2.5), and three speciated PM2.5 constituents including elemental carbon (EC), org…
