OBJECTIVE: A conceptual framework is proposed for studying late-onset psychotic disorders. This incorporates developmental and psychological perspectives to complement the biological focus of most recent studies in this area.

Cutaneous artefacts in the presence of Munchausen's syndrome can be clearly distinguished from simulation and hypochondria. In this paper we illustrate by means of two case reports the syndrome first described by Richard Asher in 1951. Patients with artefactual disease do not want to be cured, because the artefact may be the only possible way of reacting to and making contact with their surroundings. Because of their often dramatic history the relationship between physician and patient is emotionally charged from the very beginning, which is often very difficult for the attendant physician.

Examined venipuncture pain and anxiety among 90 male and 90 female children and adolescents (5 to 17 years) who were attending a hospital laboratory. The purpose of the study was to assess sex differences in pain. Ss reported state anxiety and expected pain prior to having venipuncture and sensory and affective pain following venipuncture. A survey over the disorder of chronic multiple tics (Tourette-Syndrom) is given. Two case reports reflect the effects of the syndrome on the family and other relational systems. Specific relations between the unusual and irritating symptomatology and the reaction of the family members are emphasized. In conclusion we offer some proposal for psychotherapeutic interventions, to help the relatives to cope better with the burden of the disorder.

The delay-of-gratification behavior of 104 14-year-old Ss (54 girls and 50 boys) was assessed in an experiment in which each subject chose between immediate monetary payment and larger, delayed payment on 5 occasions. Personality data were obtained on these adolescents in the form of California Adult Q-Set ratings made by several research examiners who were blind to the subjects' delay behavior. A conceptualization of coping and adaptation following victimization is presented from a life-span developmental perspective. Recovery is characterized as an evolving process of interaction among three dimensions: social cognition, environmental sensitivity, and emotional-behavioral functioning. Changing issues in the field of preschool education will be discussed, set in the context of two of my studies which have been concerned with children with special needs in 'ordinary' preschool education, one 'pre-Warnock' in Scotland, and the other 'post-Warnock' in the West Midlands. The concept of special needs will then be widened to include children for whom English is a second language, and also gifted children. Finally, the discussion is extended to early education rather than preschool education with a discussion of the dangers of treating preschool education in isolation.
