Integrated physiological, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses elucidate the mechanism of salt tolerance in Reaumuria soongorica mediated by exogenous H₂S.

BACKGROUND: Exogenous substances intervention constitutes a pivotal strategy for plant breeding and improvement, and is crucial for the remediation of saline-alkaline soils and the development of high-quality halophytic germplasm resources. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) is a novel gaseous signaling molecule that plays an important role in response to abiotic stress. For this purpose, this study integrates physiological and molecular biological research methods, focused on the cultivation of Reaumuria soongorica seedlings as the main research content, with R. soongorica roots as its main research obje

Phytobiotic Supplementation as a Sustainable Alternative to Antibiotic Growth Promoters: Impacts on Growth, Carcass Traits, Blood Lipids and Faecal Microbial Characteristics in Sonali Chickens.

The poultry industry needs safe, residue-free alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters. Phytobiotics are plant-derived feed additives that have emerged as promising alternatives, but little is known about how they affect Sonali chickens, a popular dual-purpose breed in South Asia. This study tested whether the commercial phytobiotic Novovital, given in drinking water, could improve the growth, health and profitability of Sonali birds. A total of 120-day-old chicks were divided into four groups and reared for 63 days, receiving 0 (control), 0.5, 1.0 or 1.5 mL of Novovital per litre of drinki

A river runs through it: intraspecific variability in hotter-drought-related physiological traits across the Mississippi divide in Pinus taeda L.

Human activities are intensifying heatwaves and droughts, threatening forest ecosystems worldwide. However, understanding intraspecific variation in physiological traits that confer resistance to hotter drought is critical for predicting tree responses to climate change. In Pinus taeda L., long-term geographic isolation across the Mississippi River Valley after the last glacial maximum has resulted in distinct population genetic structures, likely reflecting historical adaptation to contrasting climatic conditions in western and eastern refugia. However, it remains unclear whether contemporary

Nitrogen use efficiency in crops under salt stress: from molecular networks to intelligent breeding.

Soil salinization threatens global arable land and agricultural sustainability, severely reducing crop nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) by disrupting root ammonium and nitrate fluxes, impairing nitrogen-assimilation enzymes, and disrupting carbon-nitrogen (C-N) balance. This review synthesizes recent advances in the coordination of salt-stress signaling and nitrogen homeostasis in plants. Two mechanistically distinct regulatory axes have recently been proposed. In one, a nitrate transporter acts as a dual sensor for nitrate and abscisic acid (ABA); in the other, SOS kinase-mediated phosphorylatio

Screening and Bioinformatic Analysis of Drought-Adaptive-Response Genes in Wild Cerasus humilis.

This study aimed to screen genes associated with drought adaptation in Cerasus humilis and analyze their sequence characteristics and evolutionary relationships. The results could provide a theoretical basis for exploring the molecular basis underlying drought adaptation of Cerasus humilis. Two-year-old wild Cerasus humilis plants were cultivated in a greenhouse, and irrigation was completely withheld for 20 consecutive days. Leaves were sampled and a cDNA library of wild Cerasus humilis was constructed. By utilizing high-throughput screening in yeast combined with mannitol-induced simulated d

Characterization of McCIPK6, a mitochondrial protein, positively regulating cold stress tolerance in bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.).

As an economically important vegetable species, bitter gourd (Momordica charantia L.) is widely cultivated around the globe. However, its production is frequently threatened by late spring coldness, which severely impairs seedling establishment, delays flowering and fruit set, and reduces both yield and quality. Unraveling mechanisms of cold resistance in bitter gourd is therefore critical for breeding resilient cultivars and expanding its planting range. Here, we found a cold-inducible CIPK family gene, McCIPK6, from bitter gourd via transcriptome screening, and systematically characterized i

Genomic prediction accuracy for low hydrogen cyanide selection in fresh cassava roots. Comparative model analysis.

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crunz) is a staple food crop for millions of people in Africa. The crop’s tolerance to drought, ability to survive in marginal soils and amenability to a variety of uses endears it to farmers. However, utilization of the crop’s full potential for food security is limited by the presence of cyanogenic glucosides (HCN) in the roots. These not only make cassava bitter to the taste but can also be toxic to lethal levels. Breeding for low HCN cassava is necessary to mitigate against high dietary HCN consumption. However, efforts at variety development have been slow, in p

Draft genome of multiple resistance donor plant Sinapis alba: An insight into SSRs, annotations and phylogenetics.

BackgroundSinapis alba is a wild member of the Brassicaceae family reported to possess genetic resistance against major biotic and abiotic stresses of oilseed brassicas. However, the resistance nature of S. alba was not exploited generously due to the unavailability of usable genome sequences in public databases. Therefore, the present study was conducted to assemble the first draft genome from raw whole genome shotgun sequences with annotation and develop simple sequence repeat markers for molecular genetics and marker-assisted breeding.ResultsThe raw genome sequences had 96x coverage on the

Physiological determinants of heterosis in hybrid rice (Oryza sativa L.): identifying the optimal phenotyping stage for yield prediction.

INTRODUCTION: Hybrid rice productivity depends on heterosis, yet the developmental stage at which physiological traits become sufficiently integrated to reliably predict grain yield across diverse environments remains poorly understood. Although physiological phenotyping is increasingly used in crop improvement, the biological basis for selecting the most informative developmental stage for early yield prediction has received limited attention. METHODS: A panel of 39 rice genotypes, including hybrids, parentals, and check varieties, was evaluated across four environments. Fourteen physiologic

Quantitative trait loci for carbon isotope discrimination are repeatable across environments and wheat mapping populations.

Wheat productivity is commonly limited by a lack of water essential for growth. Carbon isotope discrimination (Delta), through its negative relationship with transpiration efficiency, has been used in selection of higher wheat yields in breeding for rainfed environments. The potential also exists for selection of increased Delta for improved adaptation to irrigated and high rainfall environments. Selection efficiency of Delta would be enhanced with a better understanding of its genetic control. Three wheat mapping populations (Cranbrook/Halberd, Sunco/Tasman and CD87/Katepwa) containing betwee

Integrated Transcriptomic and Biochemical Profiling Reveals the Regulatory Mechanism of Light Intensity-Induced Anthocyanin Biosynthesis in a Purple-Leaf Tea Cultivar.

Anthocyanins are water-soluble flavonoid pigments that contribute to leaf coloration, tea quality, and have potential health-promoting properties. Purple-leaf tea plants have attracted significant interest due to their high anthocyanin levels; however, cultivar-specific evidence linking light intensity with pigment accumulation, enzyme activity, and transcriptional regulation in purple-leaf tea remains limited. In this study, the purple-leaf tea cultivar 'Ziyan' was exposed to three light intensity treatments: low (LL, 100 μmol·m-2·s-1), medium (ML, 200 μmol·m-2·s-1), and high (HL, 400 μmol·m-

Revisiting sex plasticity in Cannabis sativa L.: A hormonal cross-talk in flower masculinisation.

Sex determination in Cannabis sativa L. has major implications for breeding, biotechnology, and crop management. In this species, sex is primarily governed by an XX/XY sex chromosome system, with genetic regulation constituting the principal level of control. Variation in sex expression, encompassing dioecious, monoecious, or hermaphroditic forms, may arise from interactions between sex chromosomes and autosomal factors X-to-autosome (X: A) chromosome balance. Secondary modulation of sex phenotype involves environmental and physiological influences, with phytohormonal regulation representing a

Phenotypic Differentiation Between Highland and Coastal Quinoa Under Cold Stress Conditions.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.) is a genetically diverse Andean crop valued for its nutrition and adaptability to varied agro-climatic conditions with potential for cultivation in European and Mediterranean, particularly on marginal lands. Low temperatures during early sowing can impair germination, while delayed sowing increases the risk of poor maturation due to unfavourable autumn weather. To assess the adaptation of quinoa to low-temperature conditions, that reflect cold stress, we evaluated germination and phenotypic variation in 60 accessions from highland and coastal ecotypes across

Metabolic Regulation Mechanism of Ilex verticillata in Response to Drought Stress: "First Inhibition Then Promotion" of Lipids and the Key Mediation of Glycerophospholipid Metabolic Pathway.

BACKGROUND: Ilex verticillata belongs to the genus Ilex of the family Aquifoliaceae. It has extremely high ornamental value, and its drought tolerance is crucial for expanding its cultivation range. Therefore, studying the metabolic regulation mechanism of I. verticillata in response to drought stress at different stages under natural drought conditions provides a basis for the expanded cultivation of I. verticillata and important theoretical support for the drought-resistant breeding of woody plants. METHODS: Two-year-old cutting seedlings (0.3~0.4 m high) of I. verticillata were used as exp

Oleanolic acid improved intestinal immune function by activating and potentiating bile acids receptor signaling in E. coli-challenged piglets.

BACKGROUND: Infection with pathogenic bacteria during nonantibiotic breeding is one of the main causes of animal intestinal diseases. Oleanolic acid (OA) is a pentacyclic triterpene that is ubiquitous in plants. Our previous work demonstrated the protective effect of OA on intestinal health, but the underlying molecular mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated whether dietary supplementation with OA can prevent diarrhea and intestinal immune dysregulation caused by enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) in piglets. The key molecular role of bile acid receptor signaling in this proce

Exploring the functional and metabolic effects of adding garra fish meal to a plant-based broiler chicken diet.

The present study evaluated the metabolic and functional effects of adding garra meal to a broiler chicken diet. Three hundred twenty Sasso-breed day-old chicks were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments with either 0, 10, 20 or 30% garra meal added on top of formulated starter and grower basal diets. The experiment lasted for 42 days. Feed intake and body weight gain increased at the starter and grower phases of broilers with garra meal addition (P < 0.05). Broiler chickens fed 30% garra meal were more efficient in converting feed to body weight and yielded the highest carcass weight (

Taxonomy, biogeography and evolution of thirty-four taxa in Phytophthora Clade 7a including eleven new species from natural forests and updated descriptions for P. fragariae, P. rubi and the 'P. ×alni hybrid complex'.

Over the past three decades, surveys in natural and managed ecosystems, driven mainly by forest biosecurity issues, have greatly expanded knowledge of the global diversity and biogeography of the plant pathogen genus Phytophthora. In Phytophthora subclade 7a alone, 16 new species were described raising the number of validly described species in this subclade to 18. Recently, in further surveys conducted in natural forests of Japan, Vietnam, Europe and North America, 11 more new Clade 7a species and one other 7a taxon have now been identified. All are considered to be endemic to the surveyed si
