The incidence of non-albicans species is rising, particularly in South America and they are frequently drug resistant, causing unresponsive cases. Thus, novel antimycotic agents are required. Trichomonas vaginalis produces soluble factors that have been reported to have the ability to damage target cells in vitro, and it has been hypothesized that these factors may play a role in the pathogenesis of human trichomoniasis.
