The term 'radiation recall' describes an acute inflammatory reaction in previously irradiated areas after the administration of certain inciting systemic agents. It was first described in 1959 by D'Angio that dermatitis is related to the application of actinomycin D on the skin. Though this reaction occurs frequently on the skin, it may also be seen in the oral mucosa, the larynx, esophagus, small intestine, lungs, muscle tissue, and brain. Most drugs associated with recall reactions are cytotoxics, however, several other drugs may also elicit the phenomenon. Although this phenomenon is well k

Interventional cardiology procedures can involve high doses to patients and, in particular, to patients' skin, the tissue at greatest risk of deterministic injuries. The evaluation of skin dose from interventional procedures is recommended, but difficult because of the amount of different X-ray fields and projections used in a procedure. For this reason, a retrospective follow-up study has been developed to identify skin injuries in patients submitted to one or more cardiac interventions in the Udine hospital between 1998 and 2002. Seventy-eight patients with a cumulative dose-area product >30

Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) is an inflammatory skin reaction that occurs in a previously irradiated body part following drug administration. This phenomenon may occur from days to years following exposure to ionizing radiation. The case of a 54-year-old Caucasian woman who was initially treated with external-beam radiation to the right thoracic region following the diagnosis of a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the right lung is reported. She received four cycles of consolidated chemotherapy with docetaxel and carboplatin. Four months later, she was admitted to the hospi

In the present study we show the capacity of an extract of the fern Polypodium leucotomos (PLE) to partially inhibit the production of cytokines showing a Th1 pattern (IL-2, IFN-gamma and TNF-alpha) in human PHA-stimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells. The percentage of inhibition was 24% for IL-2, 72% for INF-gamma and 53% for TNF-alpha. With regard to Th2 cytokines, the addition of PLE resulted in a significant increase (33%) in IL-10 production. Surprisingly, the production of the inflammatory cytokine IL-6 was completely abolished (100% inhibition) by PLE at all doses tested. In a se

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: We evaluated sucralfate, well-known in the treatment of gastric ulcers, in relation to its possible reduction of radiation-induced acute complications in the treatment of head and neck cancers.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred two patients were randomized in a double-blind placebo-controlled prospective setting. All patients were treated to a minimum dose of 55 Gy in 5 weeks. Oral intake of sucralfate was started at the beginning of radiotherapy and continued during the whole treatment at a dose of 1 g six times a day. All patients were scored according to a scoring

Certain aspects of patient management are common with conventional balloon angioplasty and newer coronary artery interventions. These aspects include the evaluation of chest pain or treatment of acute vessel closure shortly after the intervention, management of the vascular access site (especially if complications occur), prevention and treatment of contrast-induced renal dysfunction, and the use of anticoagulant or antiplatelet agents after the procedure. However, some aspects of management vary among techniques. Several different drug therapies are indicated after these procedures, but pharm

Because RF catheter ablation procedures may be lengthy and are commonly performed in young patients, concern has arisen about radiation dose in this group of patients. This article investigates radiation doses in pediatric patients undergoing RF catheter ablation. Standard fluoroscopic equipment used for diagnostic electrophysiological catheterization studies is technologically capable of dose rates as high as 90 milligray (mGy) per minute to skin and adjacent lung and 260 mGy/min to vertebral bone. Dose rates of this magnitude when used for extended periods of time have been known to cause er

Interventional procedures in angiography result in an increased radiation exposure for the physician, medical personnel, and the patient longer fluoroscopic times and of images as compared with pure diagnostic examinations. Damages like epilation and erythema are potential effects. Measures are proposed in this paper to reduce the radiation exposure. There are technical means and possibilities in the application technique. Quality checks and remote diagnosis support these measures in addition by assuring a continuous image quality.

For the early mouse foot skin reactions an increase in RBE relative to 60Co has been found for the irradiations with X ray beams generated between 100 and 250 kVp at both the surface and depth, respectively. In most cases, the RBE of the late skin reactions for irradiations at the surface and at depth are significantly lower than those for the early reactions. The clinical implications of these results, the effect of a possible hypoxic fraction of cells in the skin, and the choice of a "standard" radiation modality for radiobiological experiments are discussed.

The Anaesthesia and Recovery Service at the Galeazzi Orthopaedic Centre in Milan has an HOT unit where various cases of necrosis following radiotherapy for neoplasias have been and are still being treated. Some cases of radiodermitis and osteoradionecrosis only cured after HOT treatment are presented. The recovery of the scarring and granulation processes in these cases is attributable to the increased perfusion and above all diffusion of oxygen which activates the heating processes in the hypoxic tissues. An additional advantage of HOT is that patients can be treated in outpatients department
