Effects of periadolescent fluoxetine and paroxetine on elevated plus-maze, acoustic startle, and swimming immobility in rats while on and off-drug.

RATIONALE: Whether selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) exposure during adolescent brain development causes lasting effects remains unresolved. OBJECTIVE: Assess the effects of fluoxetine and paroxetine 60 days after adolescent exposure compared with when on-drug. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley littermates (41 litters) were gavaged on postnatal days 33-53 with fluoxetine (3 or 10 mg/kg/day), paroxetine (3, 10 or, 17 mg/kg/day), or water; half were tested while on-drug (21 litters) and half after 60 days off-drug (20 litters). RESULTS: The highest dose of the drugs reduced body weig

Clinical spectrum of patients with erosion of the inner ear by jugular bulb abnormalities.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Anatomic variants of the jugular bulb (JB) are common; however, abnormalities such as large high riding JB and JB diverticulum (JBD) are uncommon. Rarely, the abnormal JB may erode into the inner ear. The goal of our study is to report a large series of patients with symptomatic JB erosion into the inner ear. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective review in an academic medical center. METHODS: Eleven patients with JB abnormality eroding into the inner ear were identified on computed tomography (CT) scan of the temporal bone. RESULTS: Age at presentation was from 5 years to 82 ye

The cellular and behavioral consequences of interleukin-1 alpha penetration through the blood-brain barrier of neonatal rats: a critical period for efficacy.

Proinflammatory cytokines circulating in the periphery of early postnatal animals exert marked influences on their subsequent cognitive and behavioral traits and are therefore implicated in developmental psychiatric diseases such as schizophrenia. Here we examined the relationship between the permeability of the blood-brain barrier to interleukin-1 alpha (IL-1 alpha) in neonatal and juvenile rats and their later behavioral performance. Following s.c. injection of IL-1 alpha into rat neonates, IL-1 alpha immunoreactivity was first detected in the choroid plexus, brain microvessels, and olfactor

Effects of amisulpride, risperidone and chlorpromazine on auditory and visual latent inhibition, prepulse inhibition, executive function and eye movements in healthy volunteers.

In view of the evidence that cognitive deficits in schizophrenia are critically important for long-term outcome, it is essential to establish the effects that the various antipsychotic compounds have on cognition, particularly second-generation drugs. This parallel group, placebo-controlled study aimed to compare the effects in healthy volunteers (n = 128) of acute doses of the atypical antipsychotics amisulpride (300 mg) and risperidone (3 mg) to those of chlorpromazine (100 mg) on tests thought relevant to the schizophrenic process: auditory and visual latent inhibition, prepulse inhibition

Hearing screening in healthy newborns: feasibility of different methods with regard to test time.

Clicked-evoked otoacoustic emissions and automated auditory brainstem response are both considered appropriate hearing screening tools. The aim of this study was to compare their practicability with respect to test duration. In the first part of the study, clicked-evoked otoacoustic emissions were recorded in 388 healthy infants on the newborn ward in the first days of life. To reduce false positive rates of screening, clicked-evoked otoacoustic emissions combined with automated auditory brainstem response measurement (A-ABR, Algo 1E and Algo 2) were used in a second investigation. Fifty-five

A comparative study of age and degree of facial nerve recovery in patients with Bell's palsy.

The purpose of this study was to investigate if there is any relationship between the age of a patient and the degree of facial nerve recovery in patients with Bell's palsy. Between 1987 and 1995 250 patients with peripheral idiopathic facial nerve palsy were examined at the ENT Clinic of the University of Ioannina. In this group 134 were male and 116 were female. The patients' ages ranged from 4 to 80 years and had an average of 47.7 years. The average age of the male patients was 46.5 years and that of the female patients was 49.1 years. In the overall group of 250 patients 129 presented wit

Auditory nerve-brainstem responses in cystic fibrosis patients.

We conducted a study in 30 children with cystic fibrosis (CF) to determine if their hearing had been affected. Their ages ranged between 2 to 17 years and they were studied by means of complete audiologic evaluation and brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA). Twenty of them had received some ototoxic drugs for variable periods. The results showed that there was no significant correlation between CF and BERA findings. The findings indicated that, except a few middle ear problems such as serous otitis media, CF did not affect hearing status of the CF children per se.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging reveals similar brain activity changes in two different animal models of schizophrenia.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: In schizophrenia research, most of the functional imaging studies have been performed in psychotic patients, but little is known about brain areas involved in the expression of psychotic-like symptoms in animal models. The objective of this study was to visualize and compare brain activity abnormalities in a neurodevelopmental and a pharmacological animal model of schizophrenia. METHODS: Blood perfusion of specific brain areas, taken as indirect measure of brain activity, was investigated in adult rats following either neonatal ventral hippocampal lesion or acute adm

Prepulse inhibition during withdrawal from an escalating dosage schedule of amphetamine.

RATIONALE: Psychomotor stimulants can induce psychotic states in humans that closely resemble those observed in patients with idiopathic schizophrenia. Attentional and sensorimotor gating impairments are observed in schizophrenic patients using the latent inhibition (LI) and prepulse inhibition (PPI) behavioral assays, respectively. Our previous studies demonstrated that after 4 days of withdrawal from a period of amphetamine (AMPH) administration, animals exhibited disrupted LI but normal PPI. OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to test PPI in AMPH-withdrawn rats under experimental c

Reduced anxiety-- and depression-like behaviors in Emx1 homozygous mutant mice.

Emx1 is a mammalian homolog of the Drosophila gap gene empty spiracles (ems). Although it has been implicated in the formation of the mouse forebrain, the neuronal functions of this homeobox gene remain unknown. The restricted expression of Emx1 to the cerebral cortex and hippocampus suggests that it might play a role in emotional and other behavioral processes. The present study examined the phenotypes of Emx1-deficient mice generated by gene targeting technology in a battery of behavioral tests with a fixed inter-trial interval of 7 days. Compared with their wild-type littermates, the Emx1 h

Word deafness after resection of a pineal body tumor in the presence of normal wave latencies of the auditory brain stem response.

We studied the case of a 48-year-old woman who had resection of a pineal body tumor in terms of postoperative audiological function. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging disclosed partial inferior colliculi destruction and medial geniculate body degeneration. A pure tone audiogram revealed only moderate sensorineural hearing loss, but her speech perception was totally impaired. The binaural sound localization function was also impaired. The auditory brain stem response (ABR) showed waves I, III, and V to have normal latencies. The amplitude of wave III was larger than that of wave V. These

Sudden deafness: a retrospective evaluation of dextran therapy.

A retrospective evaluation was performed in 112 patients treated during a 10-year period as inpatients with the diagnosis idiopathic sudden hearing loss. Excluding all patients in whom later other diagnosis were established, like Ménière's disease, collagenoses, mumps etc., 101 patients remained. 80 of them had been treated consistently according to a protocol as having idiopathic sudden hearing loss. These patients had all 5-day treatment with low molecular weight dextran and nicotinic acid and vitamin B during 1 month. 68% did completely recover or were markedly improved (> 30 dB), another 1

Cochlear Microphonic and Summating Potential Responses from Click-Evoked Auditory Brain Stem Responses in High-Risk and Normal Infants.

BACKGROUND: Examination of cochlear and neural potentials is necessary to assess sensory and neural status in infants, especially those cared for in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) who have high rates of hyperbilirubinemia and thus are at risk for auditory neuropathy (AN). PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to determine whether recording parameters commonly used in click-evoked auditory brain stem response (ABR) are useful for recording cochlear microphonic (CM) and Wave I in infants at risk for AN. Specifically, we analyzed CM, summating potential (SP), and Waves I, III, and V. The

Unilateral cochlear implant use promotes normal-like loudness perception in adolescents with childhood deafness.

OBJECTIVES: Behavioral measures of cochlear implant (CI) device stimulation levels can be difficult to obtain in individuals with limited or no hearing experience. Loudness measures are particularly challenging. It would therefore be useful to have a battery of objective and behavioral measures to determine CI stimulation levels in listeners with childhood deafness. In the present study, the authors characterized loudness growth in 20 adolescents: 8 with normal hearing and 12 CI participants with pre/perilingual bilateral sensorineural hearing loss. They asked (1) do adolescent CI users with c

Oligodendroglial alterations and the role of microglia in white matter injury: relevance to schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia is a chronic and debilitating mental illness characterized by a broad range of abnormal behaviors, including delusions and hallucinations, impaired cognitive function, as well as mood disturbances and social withdrawal. Due to the heterogeneous nature of the disease, the causes of schizophrenia are very complex; its etiology is believed to involve multiple brain regions and the connections between them, and includes alterations in both gray and white matter regions. The onset of symptoms varies with age and severity, and there is some debate over a degenerative or developmental e

Normative sweep frequency impedance measures in healthy neonates.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing middle ear disorders in neonates is a challenging task for both audiologists and otolaryngologists. Although high-frequency (1000 Hz) tympanometry and acoustic stapedial reflex tests are useful in diagnosing middle ear problems in this age group, they do not provide information about the dynamics of the middle ear in terms of its resonance frequency (RF) and mobility. The sweep frequency impedance (SFI) test can provide this information, which may assist in the diagnosis of middle ear dysfunction in neonates. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of t

Human studies of prepulse inhibition of startle: normal subjects, patient groups, and pharmacological studies.

RATIONALE: Since the mid-1970s, cross-species translational studies of prepulse inhibition (PPI) have increased at an astounding pace as the value of this neurobiologically informative measure has been optimized. PPI occurs when a relatively weak sensory event (the prepulse) is presented 30-500 ms before a strong startle-inducing stimulus, and reduces the magnitude of the startle response. In humans, PPI occurs in a robust, predictable manner when the prepulse and startling stimuli occur in either the same or different modalities (acoustic, visual, or cutaneous). OBJECTIVE: This review covers
