The proportion of robot-assisted thoracic surgery (RATS) is continuously increasing. The main areas of clinical application are anatomical lung resections with lymphadenectomy and resection of mediastinal tumors. Especially in the area of the thymus robot-assisted procedures can now be considered the gold standard. Overall, the limitations of video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) can be overcome by the use of robot-assisted surgery and thus a larger proportion of patients can be treated with minimally invasive procedures. The safety of the RATS procedure has been repeatedly demonstrated,

Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies are produced against post-synaptic acetylcholine receptors, thereby causing impairment of neuromuscular transmission. Diagnosis of MG is confirmed with the AChR antibody test and via an Electromyography. Although medical treatment with acetylcholinesterase inhibitors remains the main treatment of MG, in recent years thymectomy has become an integral part of the treatment algorithm. Numerous factors such as the Patient's age, presence of AChR antibodies, or MuSK antibody, the severity of disease affect the decision of preformi

BACKGROUND: The use of surgical clips for athermal dissection of the lateral prostatic pedicles and ligation during pelvic lymph node dissection (PLND) while performing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) has been the gold standard. Clips are used to prevent thermal injury of the unmyelinated nerve fibers and lymphceles, respectively.
OBJECTIVE: To compare oncological and functional outcomes of a new technique of clipless, lateral pedicle control and PLND with RARP with bipolar energy (RARP-bi) versus the standard RARP technique with clips (RARP-c).

Apart from the tremendous increase in the demand for telemedicine during the COVID-19 pandemic, the use of telemedical technology offers many advantages, such as better coverage of rural areas and improved access to specialists. While current telediagnostic possibilities are often limited to a verbal consultation, the field of surgery has already made use of robotics for one of the most challenging areas of medicine: invasive procedures. Since comprehensive diagnostics are a prerequisite for each surgery, we built upon the knowledge gained in telesurgery and developed a telediagnostic system t…

Numerous mobile robots in various forms specialize in either ground or aerial locomotion, whereas very few robots can perform complex locomotion tasks beyond simple walking and flying. We present the design and control of a multimodal locomotion robotic platform called LEONARDO, which bridges the gap between two different locomotion regimes of flying and walking using synchronized control of distributed electric thrusters and a pair of multijoint legs. By combining two distinct locomotion mechanisms, LEONARDO achieves complex maneuvers that require delicate balancing, such as walking on a slac

BACKGROUND: Robotic liver surgery is emerging as the future of minimal invasive surgery. The robotic surgical system offers a stable camera platform, elimination of physiologic tremor, augmented surgical dexterity as well as improved ergonomics because of a seated operating position. Due to the theoretical advantages of the robotic assisted system, complex liver surgery might be an especially interesting indication for a robotic approach since it demands delicate tissue dissection, precise intracorporeal suturing as well as difficult parenchymal transection with subsequent need for meticulous

The introduction of the intraocular vitrectomy instrument by Machemer et al. has led to remarkable advancements in vitreoretinal surgery enabling the limitations of human physiologic capabilities to be reached. To overcome the barriers of perception, tremor, and dexterity, robotic technologies have been investigated with current advancements nearing the feasibility for clinical use. There are four categories of robotic systems that have emerged through the research: (1) handheld instruments with intrinsic robotic assistance, (2) hand-on-hand robotic systems, (3) teleoperated robotic systems, a

Transoral Robotic Surgery (TORS) is increasingly used for oropharyngeal neoplasms and obstructive sleep apnea. Post-operative pain and bleeding remain concerns. Ketorolac has proved to be a safe alternative or addition to narcotics in other operations, but has not been thoroughly evaluated in TORS. A retrospective review was carried out on all TORS cases at our institution between April 2012 and March 2019, with the vast majority of cases performed starting in 2017. Post-operative bleed rates were compared between those who received Ketorolac and those who did not. Secondary outcomes evaluated

BACKGROUND: The retropancreatic space between the superior mesenteric artery, celiac axis, and portal vein is called the mesopancreas. Total mesopancreas excision and skeletonization of both celiac axis and superior mesenteric artery are used to reduce R1 resection in high-risk patients and in those with locally advanced disease. The aim of this study was to present a series of video clips from several patients showing the mesopancreas excision and the triangle operation with a detailed technical description of both techniques with different approaches.
METHODS: Video clips were compiled from

Atrial septal defect accounts for 10-15% of congenital heart disease cases. Small-diameter atrial septal defects diagnosed during infancy or early adulthood are prone to spontaneous closure, whereas uncorrected, persistent moderate or large atrial septal defects can induce left-to-right shunting, which causes volume overload, heart failure, atrial arrhythmia, and/or pulmonary hypertension starting between the third and fourth decades of life. We describe in detail our technique for totally endoscopic, robotic-assisted atrial septal defect repair.

BACKGROUND: Ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS) is the most common procedure used in the management of hydrocephalus regardless of the etiology. The standard free-hand technique is used for the placement of VPS in patients with enlarged ventricles. In patients with very small ventricles, CSF access through ventriculostomy becomes challenging and free-hand technique may be associated with high failure rates. In these situations, stereotactic-guided VPS becomes very useful.
OBJECTIVE: To validate and describe the technique of robotic-guided VPS in cases with very small ventricles.
METHODS: Three

Robotic resection of the "offending portion" of the first rib in patients with thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS) has been associated with excellent results. The results have been due to (I) a better understanding of the pathogenesis of TOS, and (II) the technical advantages of the robotic platform. This article outlines the recent understanding of the pathogenesis of TOS, and reports the experience with robotic resection of the "offending portion" of the first rib in patients with neurogenic and venous TOS. Patients diagnosed with TOS underwent robotic first rib resection. Diagnosis of TOS was ma

BACKGROUND: Robotic assisted (RA) spine surgery was developed to reduce the morbidity for misplaced thoracolumbar (TL) pedicle screws (PS) resulting in neurovascular injuries, dural fistulas, and/or visceral/other injuries. RA is gaining the attention of spine surgeons to optimize the placement of TL PSs, and to do this more safely/effectively versus utilizing stereotactic navigation alone, or predominantly free hand (FH) techniques. However, little attention is being focused on whether a significant number of these TL RA instrumented fusions are necessary.
METHODS: RA spine surgery has been

PURPOSE: Grinding trajectory planning for robot-assisted laminectomy is a complicated and cumbersome task. The purpose of this research is to automatically obtain the surgical target area from the CT image, and based on this, formulate a reasonable robotic grinding trajectory.
METHODS: We propose a deep neural network for laminae positioning, a trajectory generation strategy, and a grinding speed adjusting strategy. These algorithms can obtain surgical information from CT images and automatically complete grinding trajectory planning.
RESULTS: The proposed laminae positioning network can rea
