Determination of aromatic metabolites in ruminant urine by high-performance liquid chromatography.

A method based on reversed-phase HPLC is reported for the separation and quantification of various urinary aromatic metabolites: hippuric, p … was 50 mumol/l. This method is useful for scanning the profile of aromatic metabolites in urine of ruminants, which provides information on the diets the animals receive.

Effects of self-focused rumination on negative thinking and interpersonal problem solving.

Hypotheses about the effects of self-focused rumination on interpretations of events and interpersonal problem solving were tested in 3 studies with dysphoric and nondysphoric participants. Study 1 supported the hypothesis that dysphoric participants induced to ruminatively self-focus on their feelings and personal characteristics would endorse more negative, biased interpretations of hypothetical situations than dysphoric participants induced to distract themselves from their mood, or nondysphoric participants. Study 2 showed that dysphoric participants who ruminated were more pessimistic abo

Additional considerations in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of obsessional ruminations--a case study.

The cognitive-behavioral treatment of a 24-year-old woman with moderately severe obsessional ruminations is described. The case demonstrates both the effectiveness and limitations of exposure with response prevention techniques for obsessive-compulsive disorder. The client's response raises questions about the clinical utility of viewing obsessions exclusively as conditioned anxiety stimuli. In addition, the case shows that cognitions related to control rather than appraisals of responsibility were instrumental in initiating neutralising activity. Further modification of the current cognitive-

Opioid inhibitory control of the ruminant stomach motility: functional importance of the hypothalamus.

In conscious sheep, Leu-enkephalin (10 and 20 micrograms.kg-1) administered into the third cerebral ventricle caused a psychosedative action and a significant inhibition of the frequency of rumen contractions. The amplitude of the first rumen contractions, following immediately after the end of the Leu-enkephalin's infusion (at a dose of 20 micrograms) and the average amplitude of primary rumen contractions were also significantly inhibited. The hypothalamic isolation prevented both the inhibitory effect of Leu-enkephalin on the rumen motility and the drug induced psychosedative action. In con

Differential reinforcement of other behaviors to treat chronic rumination of mental retardates.

Food rumination is a maladaptive, life-threatening behavior observed among infants and institutional populations for the mentally retarded. Differential reinforcement of other behaviors (IRT greater than N) was experimentally studied as a method of reducing his behavior. Two mentally retarded clients emitted reduced rumination behaviors after implementation of the differential reinforcement procedure.

The immune system on the ruminant mammary gland and its role in the control of mastitis.

Immunoglobulins in mammary secretion are derived from blood serum or are made locally by cells of the lymphocyte-plasma cell series situated close to the glandular epithelium. The major immunoglobulin in colostrum and milk of ruminants, IgG1, is derived from the blood and is transferred into secretion selectively relative to IgG2, probably by a mechanism requiring specific receptor sites on the basal of intercellular membrane of the glandular epithelium. Acute inflammation causes suppression of selective transfer of IgG1, but there is a marked increase in the transfer of proteins, such as IgG2…

Serum metaviromic profiling of yaks and Tibetan sheep provides a pre-harvest viral baseline for food-producing ruminants.

Pre-harvest viral profiles of food-producing ruminants in high-altitude pastoral systems remain poorly defined, limiting the selection of viral targets for monitoring along animal-derived food chains. In this study, we performed viral metagenomic profiling of 142 pooled serum libraries generated from 712 individual blood samples collected from yaks and Tibetan sheep across the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. A total of 2.87 billion raw reads were obtained, of which 26.34 million were assigned to viral taxa. The serum viromes were dominated by single-stranded DNA and single-stranded RNA viruses, with Pa…

Global evolutionary dynamics of peste des petits ruminants virus reveals geographic lineage structuring and clade-defining mutational signatures.

Peste des petits ruminants virus (PPRV) is recognized as one of the most economically significant transboundary pathogens affecting small ruminants. However, despite the increasing availability of whole-genome sequences, comprehensive global analyses integrating evolutionary history, phylogeography, and genome-wide lineage-defining molecular markers remain limited. This study investigated the global genomic diversity, evolutionary history, and molecular characteristics of PPRV using whole-genome sequences. A total of 212 temporally informative whole-genome sequences, retrieved from GenBank (be…

Design Considerations, Field Validation and Perspectives of a Low-Power Wearable Sensor Collar for Continuous Monitoring of Ruminants.

Wearable sensors provide significant potential for continuous animal monitoring. However, the practical implementation of such technologies on livestock farms for animal monitoring raises significant challenges related to power efficiency, robustness, and reliability. In this research paper, we propose the design, implementation, and field testing of a low-energy, low-cost, multi-sensor wearable collar specifically designed for continuous monitoring of ruminants using LoRa. The proposed collar is based on a modular hardware platform that incorporates inertial sensing, temperature sensing, and …
