Prevalence of Disability and Disability Type Among Adults--United States, 2013.

Understanding the prevalence of disability is important for public health programs to be able to address the needs of persons with disabilities. Beginning in 2013, to measure disability prevalence by functional type, the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), added five questions to identify disability in vision, cognition, mobility, self-care, and independent living. CDC analyzed data from the 2013 BRFSS to assess overall prevalence of any disability, as well as specific types of disability among noninstitutionalized U.S. adults. Across all states, disabilities in mobility and co

A pilot study of positive mood induction in euthymic bipolar subjects compared with healthy controls.

BACKGROUND: Demonstrating differences between euthymic bipolar subjects and healthy controls in response to positive (happy) mood induction may help elucidate how mania evolves. This pilot study evaluates the Go task in a reward paradigm as a method for inducing a happy mood state and compares the response of euthymic bipolar subjects and healthy controls. METHOD: The Sense of Hyperpositive Self Scale, the Tellegen positive and negative adjectives, the Global-Local task and a visual analogue scale for measuring positive affect were administered to 15 euthymic bipolar subjects and 19 age-and-s

Trial of print and telephone delivered interventions to influence walking.

BACKGROUND: Both self-help print materials and telephone-assisted counseling have generally proved useful strategies to increase physical activity. This study examined their effectiveness in an intervention aimed specifically at promoting walking for specific purposes. METHODS: Participants (n = 399) were randomly allocated to one of two 3-week intervention programs. The Print program comprised multiple mailing of brochures that emphasized walking within the local community environments. The Print plus Telephone program received the same brochures plus three telephone calls. Data collected vi

Environmental and sociocultural factors are associated with pain-related brain structure among diverse individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain: intersectional considerations.

Chronic musculoskeletal pain including knee osteoarthritis (OA) is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Previous research indicates ethnic-race groups differ in the pain and functional limitations experienced with knee OA. However, when socioenvironmental factors are included in analyses, group differences in pain and function wane. Pain-related brain structures are another area where ethnic-race group differences have been observed. Environmental and sociocultural factors e.g., income, education, experiences of discrimination, and social support influence brain structures. We investigate

Dynamics of in-phase and anti-phase bursting in the coupled pre-Bötzinger complex cells.

PURPOSE: Organizational change can be a major stress factor for employees. We investigate if stress responses can be explained by the extent to which there is a match between employee self-construal (in personal or collective terms) and change consequences (i.e., does the change particularly have consequences for the individual or for the group). We further investigate if the interactive effect of self-construal and change consequences on stress will be mediated by feelings of uncertainty. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: Data were obtained in three studies. Study 1, a laboratory study, focused o

Prediction of physician visits and prescription medicine use for back pain.

The primary purpose of this study was to examine the extent to which specific patient attitudes and beliefs about medical care and self-care for back pain predict future healthcare use. An automated database allowed examination of the predictive relationships in two primary care patient samples. In general, beliefs that physicians should find a definitive cause and permanent cure for back pain predicted neither physician visits nor prescription medication fills. Patient attitudes endorsing the benefits of medical treatment for back pain (as opposed to a permanent cure) predicted the use of the

Standard Care Versus Awake Prone Position in Adult Nonintubated Patients With Acute Hypoxemic Respiratory Failure Secondary to COVID-19 Infection-A Multicenter Feasibility Randomized Controlled Trial.

RATIONALE: The feasibility and safety of awake prone positioning and its impact on outcomes in non-intubated patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome secondary to COVID-19 is unknown. Results of the observational studies published during this pandemic have been conflicting. In this context, we conducted a multi-center, parallel group, randomized controlled feasibility study on awake prone positioning in non-intubated patients with COVID-19 pneumonia requiring supplemental oxygen. METHODS: 60 patients with acute hypoxic respiratory failure secondary to COVID-19 pneumonia requiring 4 o

A surprising finding related to executive control in a patient sample of hypersexual men.

INTRODUCTION: Patients seeking help for hypersexual behavior often exhibit features of impulsivity, cognitive rigidity, and poor judgment as well as deficits in emotion regulation and excessive preoccupation with sex. Some of these characteristics are also common among patients presenting with neurological pathology associated with executive dysfunction. Exploring relationships between dysregulated sexual behavior and executive deficits will enhance our understanding of hypersexuality. AIM: This study sought to assess whether patients seeking help for hypersexual behavior exhibit executive de

Effects of Music Therapy in the Reduction of Pre-Meal Anxiety in Patients Suffering from Anorexia Nervosa.

Literature reviews appear to indicate that Music Therapy (MT) may instil a sense of empowerment and generate feelings of renewed self-confidence, distracting subjects who follow this type of intervention from negative thoughts and, generally, helping patients suffering from Anorexia Nervosa (AN) to redevelop or rediscover their identity. The purpose of the study reported in this paper is to investigate whether MT proposed before an evening meal is capable of decreasing pre-meal anxiety in adolescents suffering from AN who follow the Day-hospital Treatment Programme at the San Bortolo Hospital

App-Based Mindfulness Meditation for People of Color Who Experience Race-Related Stress: Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: People of color (POC) who experience race-related stress are at risk of developing mental health problems, including high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression. Mindfulness meditation may be especially well suited to help POC cope, given its emphasis on gaining awareness and acceptance of emotions associated with discriminatory treatment. However, mindfulness meditation rarely reaches POC, and digital approaches could reduce this treatment gap by addressing traditional barriers to care. OBJECTIVE: This study will test the effectiveness of a self-directed app-based mindfulness

Systematic Review and Network Meta-Analysis of the Comparative Effectiveness of Self-Management Support Strategies for Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: The global prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) has continued to rise over time. Pharmacological therapy is the mainstay of conventional CKD treatment; however, many CKD patients find it difficult to adhere to their medication regimen. OBJECTIVE: To systematically evaluate and compare the effects of various self-management support strategies for patients with CKD. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus to identify quasi-randomized and RCTs comparing the effectiveness of different self-management support strategies in CKD patien

Belief in the 'Undetectable equals Untransmissible'(U=U) statement and associations with stigma, mental health and sexual satisfaction in people living with HIV (PWH) in the UK.

OBJECTIVES: The 'Undetectable equals Untransmissible' (U=U) statement is based on robust evidence. Spreading this message aims to reduce HIV stigma, increase antiretroviral therapy (ART) adherence, and improve quality of life for people with HIV (PWH). Among PWH in the UK, we assessed the proportion believing U=U and its associations with HIV-related self-stigma, mental health, and sexual satisfaction. DESIGN: Positive Voices 2022 is the largest UK national survey of PWH (April 2022-March 2023). Participants self-completed a questionnaire on socio-demographic, HIV-related, health, and lifesty

Improving Self-Management Skills Among People With Spinal Cord Injury: Protocol for a Mixed-Methods Study.

BACKGROUND: Most people with spinal cord injury will develop secondary complications with potentially devastating consequences. Self-management is a key prevention strategy for averting the development of secondary complications and their recurrence. Several studies have shown that self-management programs improve self-management behaviors and health outcomes in individuals living with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis. Given the burgeoning health care costs related to secondary complications, we developed an alternative electronic health-based implementa

[Treatment and rehabilitation programs for young alcoholics: acquiring the ability through group therapies and cognitive-behavioral therapies to communicate with others to lead a new life].

UNLABELLED: The number of young alcoholics increased rapidly around Tokyo during these several years has resulted in the emergence of AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) groups consisting mainly of 20- 30-year-olds. It is well known, however, that young alcoholics are difficult to be treated in traditional alcoholic wards where most of the patients are 50- 60-years old and are treated through group therapy, such as AA or Dansyu-kai (Japanese style AA). With their immature brains and limited experience, young people are extremely vulnerable to the effects of alcohol. Young alcoholics have missed the oppo

Follow-Up in Aphasia Caused by Acute Stroke in a Prospective, Randomized, Clinical, and Experimental Controlled Noninvasive Study With an iPad-Based App (Neolexon®): Study Protocol of the Lexi Study.

Rationale: Treatment of aphasia is still challenging for clinicians and patients. So far, there is proven evidence for "face-to-face" speech therapy. However, the digital age potentially offers new and complementary strategies that may add to treatment outcome in a cost-effective way. Neolexon® is a commercial tablet-based software for treatment of aphasia, which can be applied with the help of a therapist or as self-training by the patient. Aims and hypothesis: In the Lexi study, we aim to determine whether treatment with Neolexon® is superior to standard therapy in acute post-stroke aphasia.

Who benefits from home-based exercise for adult spinal deformity? A prospective multicenter study on clinical and radiographic predictors.

PURPOSE: The prevalence of adult spinal deformity (ASD) is expected to exceed 60 million by 2050 due to an aging population and increased life expectancy. Despite advances in surgery, high complication rates and the economic burden highlight the need for effective non-surgical treatments. This study assesses the "Koshimagari Exercise," a self-exercise program for ASD patients, and aims to develop a classification system to identify those who would benefit most. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted across 13 facilities, enrolling 144 participants from December 2020 to June 2022. T
