INTRODUCTION: The axillary nerve is injured in many clinical situations, mainly in major surgical or traumatic lesions of the shoulder. Equally, it may be found in the context of microtraumatisms or compressive mechanisms. Amyotrophic neuralgia is a clinical entity with pain and later atrophy of the muscle which affects various nerves and nerve groups, as shown by neurophysiological studies.
CASE REPORT: We present a lesion with complete axonotmesis of the axillary nerve with a time-relationship to microtraumatism. Initially the patient complained of some pain in the shoulder. During follow-u

The shoulder is the most mobile joint in the human body, thus requiring intricate coordination of adjacent muscles. Patients suffered from rotator cuff muscle injuries have several typical symptoms including shoulder pain and difficulty raising the arm, thus reducing work efficiency and compromising the quality of life. Ultrasound has been used widely for shoulder soft tissue imaging as well as ultrasound elastography was introduced in shoulder examination for the dilemma of treating degenerative rotator cuff tears. However, most of the ultrasound examination was performed under a static condi

PURPOSE: Partial intercarpal ligament injuries can coexist with scaphoid nonunions. However, whether these injuries should be debrided simultaneously when scaphoid nonunions are treated is unclear. The purpose of this study was to compare union rates and clinical outcomes after arthroscopic management of scaphoid nonunions, in which coexisting partial ligament injuries were, or were not, simultaneously debrided.
METHODS: This retrospective study included 46 patients with scaphoid nonunions and coexisting partial intercarpal ligament injuries who underwent arthroscopy-guided bone grafting and

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effectiveness of arthroscopic double fixation and enhanced suture of long head of biceps tendon (LHBT) in situ for repairing rotator cuff tear.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 31 patients with rotator cuff tears and LHBT injuries admitted between June 2022 and November 2023. All patients underwent arthroscopic double fixation and enhanced suture of LHBT in situ. There were 12 males and 19 females, with an average age of 61.6 years (range, 53-76 years). There were 10 cases of acute injury and 21 cases of chronic injury. According to DeOrio and C

BACKGROUND: Instabilities of the sternoclavicular (SC) joint are a rare injury, accounting for only 3% of all injuries of the shoulder girdle. Although acute posterior dislocations are an emergency and require immediate surgical intervention, anterior instabilities (first and second degree according to Allman) can mostly be treated conservatively. Chronic and highly instable acute anterior instabilities often impose a significant limitation on the lives of affected patients. Currently, there is no established therapeutic algorithm in place.
METHODS: This retrospective case series with prospec

Axillary nerve injury is common after brachial plexus injuries, particularly with shoulder luxation. Nerve grafting is the traditional procedure for postganglionic injuries. Nerve transfer is emerging as a viable option particularly in late referrals. At the proximal arm the radial and axillary nerves lie close by. Sacrificing one of the triceps muscle nerve branches induces little negative consequences. Transferring the long head of the triceps nerve branch is a good option to recover axillary nerve function. The surgical technique is presented in a video, stressing the steps to achieve a suc

Restoration of stability and movements at the shoulder joint are the 2 most important goals in the management of brachial plexus injuries. The 2 nerves that are preferentially targeted for this purpose are the suprascapular (SSN) and the axillary (AXN) nerves. These nerve transfers have conventionally been performed by the anterior approach, but recently transfers performed by posterior incisions have been gaining popularity, by virtue of being selective and located close to the target muscles. Herein, we describe the technical details of spinal accessory nerve (SAN) to SSN and triceps branch

Scapulothoracic dissociation has been described as a "closed traumatic forequarter amputation" and is characterized by massive soft tissue swelling of the shoulder, lateral displacement of the scapula, neurovascular injuries (brachial plexus, subclavian artery), an osseous-ligamentous injuries. In addition to the lateral displacement of the scapula, an acromioclavicular separation, a displaced fracture of the clavicle or sternoclavicular separation can be identified on plain X-rays. This injury pattern has been infrequently reported. We present a patient who had a previously unreported combina

Combined skeletal injuries to the upper limb present complex management problems because they may result in dysfunction of the terminal unit of the upper limb-the hand. This article explores complex patterns of skeletal and soft tissue injuries, including complex soft tissue trauma with closed and open fractures; the floating shoulder, elbow, and forearm; and the role of skeletal fixation in conjunction with the complex fracture patterns. As the functional capacity of the upper limb reflects an integration of all its component parts, a combined approach to skeletal and soft tissue trauma is of

Thirty-five occupants fatally injured (despite the use of seat belts) in head-on collisions suffered severe injuries to the craniocervical junction (ring fractures of the base of the skull, fractures of the upper cervical vertebrae, or disruptions between the cervical vertebrae) if there was extensive trauma against the head or if submarining under shoulder belts took place. If three-point belts were used, few or no neck injuries were observed if there was only a slight impact between the head and some part of the car, and there was no instability of the cervical spine due to pathologic change

Objectives: This study aimed to critically review the results of recent studies that investigated the epidemiology of noncombat-related musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) in the Navy. Methods: A systematic search was conducted of three major databases (Pubmed, Embase, and Cochrane) to identify epidemiological studies on MSIs in the Navy. Study selection and risk of bias assessment were conducted. Results: The overall prevalence of MSIs ranged from 12.69% to 48.81%. And the prevalence of head and face injuries, upper extremity injuries, spine injuries, chest injuries, and lower extremity injuries

The elbow is a commonly injured joint, yet physicians may be less comfortable treating injuries to the elbow compared with knee and shoulder injuries. Common injuries involving the elbow are tendinosis, instability, tendon ruptures, osteochondritis dissecans, and fractures. Tendinosis is a common overuse injury and may occur on the lateral, medial, or infrequently, the posterior side of the elbow. Injury to the medial or lateral ulnar collateral ligaments may result in instability. Repetitive trauma from overuse is the most common etiologic factor in athletes. Distal biceps and triceps tendon …

The increase in leisure-sports has not only brought an escalation in the number of sports-related injuries presenting to orthopaedists, but has also aroused interest for diagnosis and treatment of these injuries in sports-oriented and -interested physicians. The primary treatment in the sports arena remains simple: rest, ice, compression, elevation. The introduction of innovative imaging techniques beside conventional clinical and radiological examinations has facilitated differentiated diagnosis and has led to changes in the treatment of sports-related injuries. While a conservative approach

BACKGROUND: Traumatic anterior shoulder instability is common in the adolescent athlete, and when it is untreated, the recurrence rate is high. Atypical lesions-such as anterior glenoid periosteal sleeve, humeral glenohumeral ligament, and insertional tendon avulsions-may occur within this population, and accurate diagnosis and appropriate lesion management are key to treatment success.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the age, skeletal immaturity, bone loss, and uncommon soft tissue lesions as correlates of posttraumatic anterior shoulder instability lesion patterns in an adolescent population.

Acromioclavicular joint injuries are a common shoulder injury encountered by orthopaedic surgeons. Many different surgical techniques have been described for the operative treatment of these injuries with no single, clear gold standard technique on which surgeons agree. Among the most common complications after surgical management of acromioclavicular injuries are loss of reduction, infection, fracture of clavicle or coracoid, and need for reoperation. We propose an arthroscopic-assisted, tunnel-free surgical technique using a tibialis anterior allograft combined with a FiberTape Cerclage (Art

Repetitive strain injuries include a group of disorders that most commonly develop in workers using excessive and repetitious motions of the neck and upper extremity. A careful occupational history, physical examination and specific diagnostic maneuvers can help distinguish these musculoskeletal injuries from rheumatologic diseases, psychologic disorders, acute joint or tendon inflammation from other causes and single-event traumatic sprains and strains. Repetitive strain injury may be manifested by cervical syndrome, tension neck syndrome, thoracic outlet syndrome and frozen shoulder syndrome
