The records of 141 consecutive patients who underwent simple or radical cystectomy between 1955 and 1971 were reviewed. Symptoms, interval before diagnosis, and stage and grade of lesion were analyzed and correlated with survival rates. Although stage was the most critical determinant of survival, grade, presence or absence of dysuria and delay in diagnosis were also important. Preoperative radiotherapy caused downstaging in 41.2 per cent of patients, with complete disappearance of tumor in some. Postoperative complications from cystectomy and from various forms of urinary diversion were corre

BACKGROUND: In view of the many studies of early stage colorectal carcinoma from Japan, it is essential to know whether the criteria for the histologic diagnosis of colorectal carcinoma are similar in Japan and Western countries.
METHODS: Eight expert pathologists from Japan (4), North America (2), and Europe (2) individually reviewed microscope slides of 20 colorectal lesions from Japanese patients who had undergone endoscopic mucosal resection or surgery because early stage carcinoma and/or adenoma was suspected. The pathologists indicated the pathologic findings on which they based each di

INTRODUCTION: We aimed to investigate manual subtraction computed tomography angiography (MS-CTA) to further confirm the distribution and classification of LCA (left colic artery) ascending/descending branches, then observe the postoperative blood flow path to illustrate how the above branches evolved to postoperative blood path.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: 89 patients with distal sigmoid and rectal cancer were referred in our observation and underwent MS-CTA between June 2020 and March 2022. We classified the distribution of LCA and confirmed whether there exists AMCA (accessory middle colic arter

Obstructive colitis (OC) is a nonspecific inflammatory condition that occurs at the proximal side of a completely or partially stenotic lesion typically caused by colorectal cancer. Impaired blood flow caused by these stenotic changes in the colon or rectum results in this condition. During surgery for sigmoid colon carcinoma with OC, complete surgical removal of the OC lesions is required. However, it is difficult to anticipate the range of OC before surgery. Diagnosing the potential ischemia during surgery would decrease the need for re-operation. This is the first report of HyperEye Medical

The patient was 55-year-old woman, undergoing Hartmann operation by the sigmoid colon diverticulum perforation, 2 years later visited our hospital with abdominal pain. Although lower endoscopy and histological examination could not be performed due to stoma stenosis, we diagnosed cecal carcinoma, liver metastasis, distant lymph node metastasis from CT and PET-CT, CapeOX plus Bmabtherapy and IRIS plus Bmabtherapy were performed. After that, repeated intestinal obstruction due to exacerbated stoma stenosis, metastatic lesion increased in CT examination, furthermore the patient had hope of stoma

We report a case of advanced sigmoid colon cancer that was resected after chemoradiation therapy(CRT)following ineffective chemotherapy. A 59-year-old woman harbored a lower abdominal tumor the size of an infant's head and was diagnosed with a huge sigmoid colon cancer with invasion to the urinary bladder and metastases to the para-aortic lymph nodes. The patient received 2 courses of modified FOLFOX6(mFOLFOX6)plus cetuximab therapy, which was assessed as ineffective; She then received CRTwith 50.4 Gy in 28 fractions plus concurrent oral S-1(100mg/day for 28 days). Tumor shrinkage in the prima

Inguinal (inguinoscrotal) hernia and colon cancer are common conditions. However, it is rare for primary colon cancer to exist in an inguinal hernia sac and even rarer for it to perforate. We report such an event in our patient, who had an irreducible left inguinoscrotal hernia containing a sigmoid colon carcinoma that had perforated. This clinical picture can be easily confused with hernia strangulation unless the clinician is alert to the presence of certain sinister symptoms and signs.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic surgery has become increasing popular, and its use has been proven safe. However, major vascular injuries during laparoscopic procedures can have devastating effects, and there is a paucity of information regarding their intraoperative management. Here we report our experience with laparoscopic vascular injury repair and analyze the available literature on this topic.
METHODS: Two cases of iliac vessel injury during laparoscopic colectomy were reviewed from a single surgeon's experience with of over 1,000 major laparoscopic procedures. The details of injury, technique

BACKGROUND: Potential morbidities related to multiport laparoscopic surgeries have led to the current excitement about single-incision laparoscopic techniques. However, multiport laparoscopy is technically demanding and ergonomically challenging. We present our technique of using the Alexis wound retractor and a surgical glove to fashion an access port and the da Vinci surgical robot to perform single-incision anterior resection.
METHODS: Through a small transumbilical incision, an Alexis wound retractor and a surgical glove are fashioned as an access port. Appropriate trocars are then insert

A 67-year-old woman, with a past medical history of diabetes mellitus and hypertension, underwent an elective laparoscopic anterior resection for sigmoid colon adenocarcinoma. She was readmitted on the tenth postoperative day with complaints of abdominal pain and a foul smelling discharge from her abdominal wound. She was later diagnosed with necrotizing fasciitis (NF) over the extraction wound. To our knowledge there has only been one other case of NF after laparoscopic colonic surgery reported in the literature. We reviewed the literature on NF after laparoscopic surgery, and discussed the c

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 58-year-old patient suffered from rapidly progressing renal insufficiency and 11 kg weight-loss three months after adjuvant treatment of a carcinoma of the lower bowel (G 2 T 3 N 1 M 0 ) with mitomycine C. At the point of hospitalisation the patient was anuric while suffering from pulmonary oedema, hemolytic anemia and thrombocytopenia.
INVESTIGATIONS: Computed tomography and bronchial endoscopy showed pulmonary haemorrhage. Recurrence of carcinoma or metastases were excluded. Renal biopsy revealed mesangiolysis and concentric intimaproliferation (onion skinni
