Mandibular Metastasis in Neuroblastoma in a 3 Year-Old Child: A Case Report.

Neuroblastomas commonly metastasize to the cranium and orbit, although other facial bones were less implicated. In this report we present a 3 years old child with metastatic neuroblastoma to the mandible that presented with swollen right jaw. The first assessment of the head with computed tomography revealed soft tissue mass with permeative lytic changes of the osseous structures centered on the right mandible, as well as osteo-meningitis metastases. These masses were proven to be metastatic lesions from intra-abdominal neuroblastoma of the right adrenal gland. Over the previous several years,

A Case of Phlebolith in the Tip of Tongue.

The differential diagnosis of a tongue mass containing calcified bodies includes a phlebolith associated with vascular lesions, such as hemangioma and vascular malformation, and diseases such as neoplasm, osseous choristoma and hypercalcemic states, including hyperparathyroidism. The appearance of the calcified bodies on plain radiographs may help to differentiate these entities. Computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and ultrasonography are also useful for differentiating these soft tissue lesions. We report a 40-year-old man with a small mass containing a calcified body in the tip

Perineal necrotizing soft tissue infection secondary to rectal perforation from a large fish bone -a painful lesion not to be missed.

Necrotizing soft tissue infection caused by a large 70 mm fish bone that led to a single perforation of the rectum is an incredibly rare phenomenon. We report a case of an adult male in his 50s who presented with perianal pain. A prompt computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a foreign body had perforated through the rectum into the retrorectal space with associated gas locules, indicating a necrotizing infection. In addition, our case report explores the principles of wide exploration and debridement, the role of a defunctioning colostomy in perineal wound management, and principles of wound c

Postoperative MRI of the Ankle and Foot.

Many surgical procedures and operations are used to treat ankle and foot disorders. Radiography is the first-line imaging for postoperative surveillance and evaluation of pain and dysfunction. Computed tomography scans and MR imaging are used for further evaluation. MR imaging is the most accurate test for soft tissues assessments. MR imaging protocol adjustments include basic and advanced metal artifact reduction. We chose a surgical approach to select the common types of procedures and discuss the normal and abnormal postoperative MR imaging appearances, highlighting potential complications.

Echocardiographic, thoracic ultrasonographic, and CTA diagnosis of pericardial neoplasia in a dog.

A 12-year-old male neutered Yorkshire Terrier presented for coughing and respiratory distress. Transthoracic echocardiography initially misdiagnosed the patient with pericardial effusion; repeat echocardiography increased suspicion for neoplasia. A definitive diagnosis was not apparent. Findings on thoracic computed tomography and thoracic ultrasound were consistent with a diffusely thickened, heterogenous, hypoechoic soft tissue structure surrounding the heart. Fine needle aspirates were obtained using ultrasound guidance and routine cytology of the intrapericardial mass was consistent with n

What is the Fate of the Pedicled Buccal Fat Pad Flap When Used During Primary Palatoplasty?

Pedicled buccal fat pad flaps have more recently been applied to primary cleft palate reconstruction, and yet the integrity of the flap and the long-term impact on the palate has not yet been studied. This case study uses magnetic resonance imaging to evaluate the composition of the soft palate 5 years after the interpositional placement of bilateral pedicled buccal fat pad flaps during primary palatoplasty. Anatomical measures are used to quantify the flap and surrounding velopharynx using magnetic resonance imaging and three-dimensional computer technology, indicating that this surgical tech

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma (noninvasive): A report of a rare case.

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA) is the most common type of benign tumors of minor salivary glands. A carcinoma ex-pleomorphic adenoma (CXPA) is a malignant epithelial neoplasm originating from either a primary or recurrent benign PA. The nasopharynx is an extremely uncommon location for this tumor. A 32-year-old male had complaints of nasal blockage. In noncontrast computed tomography, a soft-tissue mass was present in the nasopharynx. Histopathological and immunohistochemical examination of the endoscopically excised mass revealed features of CXPA, noninvasive in nature. Careful histopathological ex

Extranodal Lymphomas: a pictorial review for CT and MRI classification.

Extranodal lymphomas represent an extranodal location of both non-Hodgkin and Hodgkin lymphomas. This study aims to evaluate the role of CT and MRI in the assessment of relationships of extranodal lymphomas with surrounding tissues and in the characterization of the lesion. We selected and reviewed ten recent studies among the most recent ones present in literature exclusively about CT and MRI imaging of extranodal lymphomas. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) is usually the first-line imaging modality in the evaluation of extranodal lymphomas, according to Lugano classification. Howeve

[Preoperative Diagnosis of Spinal Immature Teratoma Associated with Cerebrospinal Fluid Leakage from the Congenital Dermal Sinus Tract in a 0-Day-Old Infant:A Case Report].

We report the case of a patient with spinal immature teratoma and cerebrospinal fluid leakage from the congenital dermal sinus tract. A 0-day-old female infant presented with a subcutaneous soft mass with a dimple in the lumbosacral region at birth. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mixed low-intensity mass located in the extraspinal and intraspinal canal with a sinus tract. The reconstructed three-dimensional spinal computed tomography image showed spina bifida and ectopic ossification at the dorsal aspect of the sacrum. Urgent removal of the tumor and dermal sinus tract was then performe

Successful treatment of thymic carcinoma with dermatomyositis and interstitial pneumonia: A case report.

Here, we report a rare case of thymic carcinoma (TC) associated with dermatomyositis (DM) and interstitial pneumonia (IP) in a 68-year-old man. The patient presented with the characteristic features of a skin rash with Gottron's papules and increased serum levels of muscle-associated enzymes. Computed tomography (CT) showed the presence of an anterior mediastinal soft tissue mass with IP, which was diagnosed as TC by CT-guided tumor biopsy. The patients DM and IP disappeared completely after radical resection of the tumor. After a 20-month follow-up period, the patient was in good clinical con

Veillonella parvula periorbital cellulitis: an unusual pathogen causing a common clinical sign.

We describe the case of a one-year-old boy who presented at the emergency department with a sudden onset of fulminant edema of the right eyelid. He had been suffering from a varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection for 5 days. A secondary bacterial infection of varicella skin lesions was suspected. Computed tomography of the orbit revealed pronounced superficial soft tissue inflammation of the right periorbit, without intraorbital extension. There was a spontaneous rupture of the right upper eyelid and a culture of the released fluid grew the anaerobic organism Veillonella parvula. The patient w

Successful Treatment of Erdheim-Chester Disease With Coronary Artery Involvement.

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare non-Langerhans histiocytosis and inflammatory myeloid neoplasm with poor prognosis. Symmetric long bone osteosclerosis occurs in nearly all patients, but other organs are often involved. Coronary artery involvement is rare, but was encountered in a patient who experienced angina. Radiologic presentation and histologic findings were consistent with diagnosis of ECD. A soft-tissue mass was found surrounding the right atrium, ascending aorta, and all branches of coronary artery. Interferon-alfa treatment was successful. In conclusion, we recommend coronary

Angioleiomyoma of the falx.

A 43-year-old man arrived at the emergency department following a syncopal episode. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance images demonstrated a small interhemispheric, anterior parafalcine mass that mimicked a meningioma. Surgical excision and subsequent pathologic evaluation revealed an angioleiomyoma and the patient recovered without incident. Angioleiomyomas are classified as benign smooth muscle tumors and are classically seen in adult females arising in the soft tissues of the lower extremities. Although rare, these masses have been described in various intracranial locations, usuall

IMAGING DIAGNOSIS-IDIOPATHIC HYOID MALFORMATION IN AN 8-YEAR-OLD WELSH SECTION D HORSE.

An 8-year-old gelding was evaluated for intermittent dorsal displacement of the soft palate (DDSP) at exercise. Standing laterolateral radiographs demonstrated an abnormal crossed appearance of the stylohyoid bones. Computed tomography (CT) confirmed abnormal positioning of the left stylohyoid bone and articulations with both the left thyrohyoid and ceratohyoid bones. Surgical treatment consisted of combined left ceratohyoidectomy and thyrohyoidectomy. Postoperatively the patient's presenting complaint resolved completely, with the horse returning to full work. Standing laterolateral radiograp

[Kaposi's sarcoma in the grafted lung].

The paper provides a clinical note. A 45-year-old patient suffered from severe primary emphysema and underwent bilateral lung transplantation. A year after surgery, exercise dyspnea again appeared in the patient. Lung computed tomography revealed multiple rounded soft tissue masses; thoracoscopic biopsy and further histological examination proved the development of Kaposi's sarcoma in the patient. The tumor disappeared completely following corrected immunosuppressive therapy. After 22 months of transplantation, the patient died from gastrointestinal bleeding. This case is of interest due to th

Intramastoid solitary neurofibroma mimicking middle ear carcinoma.

We report an extremely rare case of intramastoid neurofibroma. A mass with destruction of the mastoid bone of a 51-year-old woman was examined with computed tomography. Subsequent magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an ill-defined soft tissue mass with the opacification of mastoid air cells that had a mass effect in the same area. The patient underwent left subtotal temporal bone resection, and histological and immunohistochemical findings confirmed the lesion to be a neurofibroma. Given that similar imaging features of neurofibroma have been reported previously elsewhere in the head/neck

A Case of Posterior Mediastinal Plasmacytoma Confounded by Community-Acquired Pneumonia.

Plasmacytomas are extramedullary accumulations of plasma cells originating from soft tissue. Mediastinal plasmacytoma is a rare presentation. A 67-year-old man recovered after antibiotic treatment for community-acquired pneumonia. However, on convalescent chest radiography after 3 months, mass like lesion at the right lower lung field was newly detected. Follow-up chest computed tomography (CT) revealed an increase in the extent of the right posterior mediastinal mass that we had considered to be pneumonic consolidations on previous CT scans. Through percutaneous needle biopsy, we diagnosed Ig

Dysphagia, hoarseness, and a hypopharyngeal mass.

We describe a patient who developed a hypopharyngeal mass (in the setting of a cervical osteophyte) while taking clopidogrel and aspirin for coronary artery disease. He had a 2-month history of progressive dysphagia and hoarseness. Physical examination and computed tomography scan revealed a soft tissue retropharyngeal mass of unclear etiology yet with a stable airway. He was admitted to the intensive care unit for a 48-hour clopidogrel washout followed by surgery. A hematoma and cervical osteophyte were removed with scant bleeding. This case report emphasizes the need to consider the medicati

Refractory sclerosing mesenteritis involving the small intestinal mesentery: a case report and literature review.

A 28-year-old Japanese man presented with upper abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a soft tissue mass in the small bowel mesentery. We diagnosed the patient with sclerosing mesenteritis according to the histological findings of small bowel mesentery. Although he was treated with prednisolone, colchicine and azathioprine, neither his symptoms nor CT findings improved. This case is rare in that the disease was refractory. The characteristics of Japanese patients with sclerosing mesenteritis involving small bowel mesentery are not well understood. We herein describe the details of

[Sternal tuberculosis causing spontaneous fracture of the sternum].

Sternal tuberculosis is an uncommon condition. Few cases have been reported. We report the case of a 74-year-old man, presented with a swelling and pain of the anterior chest wall associated to worsening of general state. All routine investigations were normal. Chest radiograph in lateral view showed sternal and chest wall hypertrophy with spontaneous fracture of the sternum. Computed tomography (CT) scan demonstrated ring-enhancing hypodense soft tissue mass surrounding the sternum with sternal fracture. Tuberculosis diagnosis was confirmed by histological study of the mass biopsy. We noted c
