We have calculated an ab initio HCN/HNC linelist for all transitions up to J= 25 and 18000 cm(-1) above the zero point energy. This linelist contains more than 200 million lines each with frequencies and transition dipoles. The linelist has been calculated using our semi-global HCN/HNC VQZANO + PES and dipole moment surface, which were reported in van Mourik et al. (J. Chem. Phys. 115 (2001) 3706). Deep-sea teleost fish were collected from the Sagami Bay near a deep fissure in the Pacific Ocean. Fish were identified as Chlorophthalmis albatrosis, Engyprosopan xystrias, Satyrichthys hians, Ventrifossa garmani, and Halieutaea stellata. A simple, rapid and reliable method was developed for the determination of total mercury in biological samples. Samples were solubilized using tetramethylammonium hydroxide (TMAH). The organically bound mercury was cleaved and converted to inorganic mercury by on-line addition of KMnO4. Two sensitive and fast flow-injection spectrophotometric methods are proposed for the determination of frusemide or sulphathiazole based on the formation of coloured complexes between these compounds and Pd(II) at pH 5.0 and 55 degrees C. Using the peak height as a quantitative parameter, frusemide or sulphathiazole was determined at 410 nm over the range 2.0 x 10(-5)-4.0 x 10(-4) M or 5.0 x 10(-5)-3 x 10(-4) M, respectively. The methods were applied to the determination of these sulphonamides in pharmaceuticals.

The physical-chemical properties of a new Iron-Protein complex, the so called "Iron Yeast" biotecnologically produced by Saccharomyces cerevisiae cell cultures, are reported. Using atomic absorption methods the amount of free iron in the complex has been evaluated, ascertaining that 99% of Iron is structurally bound to the protein matrix. Iron Yeast is a further, original contribution to the treatment of iron-deficiency anemias, showing a satisfactory clinical activity and a lower amount of undesired side effects in comparison with other Iron-Protein complexes.

Rifamycin B and rifamycin SV belong to the class of macrocyclic antibiotics known as ansamycins. These macrocyclic antibiotics were used as chiral selectors in capillary electrophoresis to enantioselectively resolve a number of chiral compounds. When cyanide poisoning is treated with a methemoglobin-forming agent, oxidative metabolism is protected at the expense of the oxygen capacity of the blood. The affinity of methemoglobin for CN- is high enough to compete with cytochrome oxidase, which protects the latter from becoming blocked, but all hemoglobin used for this purpose is lost for the transport of oxygen. Our interest is in measuring the threshold for blur, for long borders at well-defined retinal eccentricities between large fields of colour. Our method is to precisely match a centrally fixated sharp-edged disk of one colour against a surround of another, using the minimum distinct border criterion. A method is proposed which gives an idea of the type of the absorption spectra of the total porphyrines in the urine without requiring its recording. A single portion of 0,2 ml of urine is mixed with 1,8 ml of IM HCL. The extinctions at 380, 401, 405 and 430 nm are read. The doubled real extinctions (2RE) at 401 and 405 are calculated by the formulae 2RE401--(E380 + E430) and 2E405--(E380 + E430). The extinctions at 380 and 430 outline the "background" of substances which are not porphyrines. When using Spekol 10 the results are multiplied by 1,6 and for Spekol II--they are multiplied by 1,4.

A novel approach for the simultaneous high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) analysis of thiopental and its major metabolite, pentobarbital, in blood plasma is described.
