Multimodal Intravascular Imaging of the Vulnerable Coronary Plaque.

Vulnerable coronary plaques are atherosclerotic lesions which, due to their specific phenotype, are prone to plaque rupture and to cause acute coronary syndromes, with subsequent relevant morbidity and mortality. Strategies to break the chain link between plaque vulnerability and adverse clinical events include optimized pharmacologic prevention and potentially also preemptive percutaneous coronary interventions (previously defined as "plaque sealing" or "plaque passivation"). Various morphologic features of the vulnerable plaques have been described, including aspects regarding the large necr

Rational design of a NIR fluorescent probe for carboxylesterase 1 detection during endoplasmic reticulum stress and drug-induced acute liver injury.

An endoplasmic reticulum targeting NIR fluorescent probe (ERBM) was developed for real-time monitoring of carboxylesterase 1 (CES1) and exhibited excellent ER location in living cell imaging. In addition, ERBM was applied to illustrate the regulation characteristics of CES1 under ER stress and acute liver injury models at the cell and animal level.

Brain BOLD and NIRS response to hyperoxic challenge in sickle cell disease and chronic anemias.

PURPOSE: Congenital anemias, including sickle cell anemia and thalassemia, are associated with cerebral tissue hypoxia and heightened stroke risks. Recent works in sickle cell disease mouse models have suggested that hyperoxia respiratory challenges can identify regions of the brain having chronic tissue hypoxia. Therefore, this work investigated differences in hyperoxic response and regional cerebral oxygenation between anemic and healthy subjects. METHODS: A cohort of 38 sickle cell disease subjects (age 22 ± 8 years, female 39%), 25 non-sickle anemic subjects (age 25 ± 11 years, female 52%

New Degradable Semiconducting Polymers for Photoacoustic Imaging of λ-Carrageenan-Induced Arthritis Mouse Model.

Semiconducting polymer has a high extinction coefficient and a long band absorption and can be used as a photoacoustic imaging contrast agent. However, nonbiodegradable semiconducting polymers may cause biosafety issues due to being retained in the body. Therefore, developing degradable semiconducting polymers is necessary for in vivo imaging. Herein, we developed three degradable semiconducting polymers with unique optical properties. We adjusted the optical properties of semiconducting polymers by designing the molecular structure of semiconducting polymers. Polymers with a donor-π-acceptor

The neurodevelopmental basis of humor appreciation: A fNIRS study of young children.

Humor is crucial for social development. Despite this, very few studies have examined the neurodevelopment of humor in very young children, and none to date have used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to study this important cognitive construct. The main aim of the current study was to characterize the neural basis of humor processing in young children between the ages of 6-8 years. Thirty-five healthy children (6-8 years old) watched funny and neutral video clips while undergoing fNIRS imaging. We observed activation increases in left temporo-occipito-parietal junction (TOPJ), inf

Mild poikilocapnic hypoxia increases very low frequency haemoglobin oxygenation oscillations in prefrontal cortex.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to investigate the effect of mild cerebral hypoxia on haemoglobin oxygenation (HbO2), cerebrospinal fluid dynamics and cardiovascular physiology. To achieve this goal, four signals were recorded simultaneously: blood pressure, heart rate / electrocardiogram, HbO2 from right hemisphere and changes of subarachnoid space (SAS) width from left hemisphere. Signals were registered from 30 healthy, young participants (2 females and 28 males, body mass index = 24.5 ± 2.3 kg/m2, age 30.8 ± 13.4 years). RESULTS: We analysed the recorded signals using wavelet transfo

Rapid detection of seven indexes in sheep serum based on Raman spectroscopy combined with DOSC-SPA-PLSR-DS model.

Hepatic fascioliasis, ketosis of pregnancy, toxemia of pregnancy and other common sheep diseases will directly affect the concentration (/enzymatic activity) of seven indicators, such as cortisol and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) in sheep serum. Whether the concentrations (/enzymatic activity) of these indicators can be detected quickly will directly affect the prevention of sheep diseases and the targeted adjustment of breeding methods, thereby affecting the economic benefits of sheep breeding. In this research, we established partial least square regression (PLSR), support vec

Changes in Cortical Activation During Dual-Task Walking in Individuals With and Without Visual Vertigo.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Persons with vestibular disorders are known to have slower gait speed with greater imbalance and veering during dual-task walking than healthy individuals, but the cerebral mechanisms are unknown. The purpose of this study was to determine whether individuals with visual vertigo (VV) have different cerebral activation during dual-task walking compared with control subjects. METHODS: Fourteen individuals with VV and 14 healthy controls (CON) were included (mean 39 years old, 85% women). A cross-sectional experimental study consisting of 4 combinations of 2 surfaces (eve

Concurrent anodal transcranial direct-current stimulation and motor task to influence sensorimotor cortex activation.

Functional targeting with anodal high-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-atDCS) of involved brain areas during performance of a motor task (online) may facilitate sensorimotor cortex neuroplasticity compared to performing the motor task after HD-atDCS (offline). The aim of this study was to employ functional near-infrared spectroscopy to compare the time course of motor task-related changes in sensorimotor cortex activation between online and offline HD-atDCS. We hypothesized that online HD-atDCS would have a greater effect on task-related sensorimotor cortex activation tha

WearLight: Toward a Wearable, Configurable Functional NIR Spectroscopy System for Noninvasive Neuroimaging.

Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has emerged as an effective brain monitoring technique to measure the hemodynamic response of the cortical surface. Its wide popularity and adoption in recent time attribute to its portability, ease of use, and flexibility in multimodal studies involving electroencephalography. While fNIRS is still emerging on various fronts including hardware, software, algorithm, and applications, it still requires overcoming several scientific challenges associated with brain monitoring in naturalistic environments where the human participants are allowed to mov

Reduction but no shift in brain activation after arithmetic learning in children: A simultaneous fNIRS-EEG study.

Neurocognitive studies of arithmetic learning in adults have revealed decreasing brain activation in the fronto-parietal network, along with increasing activation of specific cortical and subcortical areas during learning. Both changes are associated with a shift from procedural to retrieval strategies for problem-solving. Here we address the critical, open question of whether similar neurocognitive changes are also evident in children. In this study, 20 typically developing children were trained to solve simple and complex multiplication problems. The one-session and two-week training effects

Predicting affective valence using cortical hemodynamic signals.

Ascribing affective valence to stimuli or mental states is a fundamental property of human experiences. Recent neuroimaging meta-analyses favor the workspace hypothesis for the neural underpinning of valence, in which both positive and negative values are encoded by overlapping networks but are associated with different patterns of activity. In the present study, we further explored this framework using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in conjunction with multivariate analyses. We monitored the fronto-temporal and occipital hemodynamic activity of 49 participants during the viewin

Hemispheric mPFC asymmetry in decision making under ambiguity and risk: An fNIRS study.

The Iowa Gambling Task (IGT) is a commonly used task for testing decision-making under ambiguity (the early stage) and risk (the late stage). However, differences between the temporal dynamic signals underlying these two types of decision-making as well as the hemispheric specificity of decision making during the IGT remain unknown. The present study sought to address this gap by focusing on the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), which plays an important role in decision-making across life domains. We used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) with high spatial and temporal resolution an

Investigation of Confounding Factors in Measuring Tissue Saturation with NIRS Spatially Resolved Spectroscopy.

Performing absolute measurements of tissue saturation of the brain with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a clinically desirable brain monitoring tool. Tissue oxygenation index (TOI) is an indicator of absolute tissue mixed arterial and venous oxygen saturation, and can be calculated using a NIRS technique called spatially resolved spectroscopy (SRS). SRS instruments measure the change of light attenuation with distance by using multiple light source-detector distances at two or more wavelengths. The aim of the study is to use broadband NIRS SRS data to investigate the effects on the calcul

Muscle oxygenation in Type 1 diabetic and non-diabetic patients with and without chronic compartment syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Type 1 diabetic patients and non-diabetic patients were referred for evaluation for chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS) based on clinical examination and complaints of activity-related leg pain in the region of the tibialis anterior muscle. Previous studies using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) showed greater deoxygenation during exercise for CECS patients versus healthy controls; however, this comparison has not been done for diabetic CECS patients. METHODS: We used NIRS to test for differences in oxygenation kinetics for Type 1 diabetic patients diagnosed with (CECS

Intraoperative Near-infrared Imaging for Parathyroid Gland Identification by Auto-fluorescence: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Parathyroid glands (PGs) can be particularly hard to distinguish from surrounding tissue and thus can be damaged or removed during thyroidectomy. Postoperative hypoparathyroidism is the most common complication after thyroidectomy. Very recently, it has been found that the parathyroid tissue shows near-infrared (NIR) auto-fluorescence which could be used for intraoperative detection, without any use of contrast agents. The work described here presents a histological validation ex vivo of the NIR imaging procedure and evaluates intraoperative PG detection by NIR auto-fluorescence us
