Decreased regional cerebral blood flow in medial prefrontal cortex during trauma-unrelated stressful imagery in Vietnam veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder.

BACKGROUND: Neuroimaging research has demonstrated medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) hyporesponsivity and amygdala hyperresponsivity to trauma-related or emotional stimuli in post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Relatively few studies have examined brain responses to the recollection of stressful, but trauma-unrelated, personal events in PTSD. In the current study, we sought to determine whether regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) abnormalities in mPFC and amygdala in PTSD could be observed during the recollection of trauma-unrelated stressful personal events. METHOD: Participants were 35 rig

Functional and Cosmetic Urethroplasty Outcome, Emotional Stress after Genital Examination, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and Ages at the Time of Urethroplasty as Potential Risk Factor Causing Psychosocial Disorder of Hypospadia Children.

BACKGROUND: Children with hypospadias, being born with congenital abnormalities, having repeated genital examination, hospitalization, and undewent genital surgery, experienced psychological stress that may negatively affect their psychosocial life. Choosing the proper time of surgery as recommended is important, since it may have a positive impact on the psychosocial adaptation. AIM: This study aims to find the risk factors causing psychosocial disorders in post-repair surgery on hypospadias children. METHODS: This is a case control study, from 203 hypospadias patients underwent urethroplas

Experiences of infertility-related traumatic events and their association with symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD: results from a mixed-methods online survey.

STUDY QUESTION: What are experiences of infertility-related traumatic events and are these associated with symptoms of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Complex PTSD (CPTSD)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Infertility-related trauma results from the interplay between a strong unfulfilled desire for children, negative reproductive events and (lack of) associated care, with 9% and 32% of those reporting a traumatic event meeting criteria for PTSD and CPTSD, respectively. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: There is worldwide recognition that fertility treatment is highly stressful, but limited understanding of it

The efficacy of psychological interventions for adult post-traumatic stress disorder following exposure to single versus multiple traumatic events: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Previous meta-analyses of psychological interventions for adult post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) did not investigate whether efficacy is diminished in individuals with PTSD related to multiple (vs single) traumatic events. We aimed to assess whether treatment efficacy would be lower in randomised controlled trials involving multiple-event-related PTSD versus single-event-related PTSD. METHODS: For this meta-analysis, we searched PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Web of Science, and PTSDpubs from database inception to April 18, 2023. Randomised controlled trials involving adult clinical samp

Altered Metabolic Interrelationships in the Cortico-Limbic Circuitry in Military Service Members with Persistent Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Symptoms Following Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

Introduction: Comorbid mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are common in military service members. The aim of this study is to investigate brain metabolic interrelationships in service members with and without persistent PTSD symptoms after mTBI by using 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography. Methods: Service members (n = 408) diagnosed with mTBI were studied retrospectively. Principal component analysis was applied to identify latent metabolic systems, and the associations between metabolic latent systems and self-report measures of

Heart rate variability impairment during sleep in Veterans with rapid eye movement sleep behaviour disorder, traumatic brain injury, and post-traumatic stress disorder: an early potential window into autonomic dysfunction?

Individuals with comorbid rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behaviour disorder (RBD) and neurotrauma (NT; defined by traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder) have an earlier age of RBD symptom onset, increased RBD-related symptom severity and more neurological features indicative of prodromal synucleinopathy compared to RBD only. An early sign of neurodegenerative condition is autonomic dysfunction, which we sought to evaluate by examining heart rate variability during sleep. Participants with overnight polysomnography were recruited from the Veterans Affairs Portland Health Car

Mild Traumatic Brain Injury Is Associated with Early Anterior Insula Hyperactivation During Appraisal of Fearful Stimuli in Trauma Survivors with Probable Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Background: Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) may rapidly alter neurocognitive function and has been associated with an increased risk for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). However, neuroimaging investigations during the acute post-trauma phase remain sparse. We previously reported greater left anterior insular cortex (aIC) activation during the cognitive appraisal of fearful versus neutral emotional faces in survivors who did and did not exhibit probable PTSD at 3 months, but not at 2 weeks, after a motor vehicle collision (MVC). Given previous studies suggesting that mTBI may lead to i

Early traumatic experiences impair the functioning of both components of the endogenous stress response system in adult people with eating disorders.

Childhood trauma is a non-specific risk factor for eating disorders (EDs). It has been suggested that this risk is exerted through trauma-induced long-lasting changes in the body stress response system. Therefore, we explored the activity of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis and of the sympathetic nervous system in adult ED patients with or without a history of childhood trauma exposure. Salivary cortisol and alpha-amylase, a marker of the sympathetic nervous system activity, were measured at awakening and after 15, 30 and 60 min in 35 women with EDs. The Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (

Transdiagnostic remission of psychiatric comorbidity in post-traumatic stress disorder, ADHD, and binge-eating disorder using ketogenic metabolic therapy: a retrospective case report.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric comorbidities, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), ADHD, and binge-eating disorder (BED), frequently share overlapping symptoms and metabolic dysfunctions. Disorder-specific treatments may not adequately address these shared biological mechanisms, resulting in suboptimal outcomes. This case report evaluates ketogenic metabolic therapy (KMT) as an intervention specifically targeting these transdiagnostic features. METHODS: A 38 years-old female with PTSD, ADHD, BED, bipolar II disorder, depression, anxiety, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder diagnoses part

Oxidative and Excitatory Neurotoxic Stresses in CRISPR/Cas9-Induced Kynurenine Aminotransferase Knockout Mice: A Novel Model for Despair-Based Depression and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.

BACKGROUNDS: Memory and emotion are especially vulnerable to psychiatric disorders such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which is linked to disruptions in serotonin (5-HT) metabolism. Over 90% of the 5-HT precursor tryptophan (Trp) is metabolized via the Trp-kynurenine (KYN) metabolic pathway, which generates a variety of bioactive molecules. Dysregulation of KYN metabolism, particularly low levels of kynurenic acid (KYNA), appears to be linked to neuropsychiatric disorders. The majority of KYNA is produced by the aadat (kat2) gene-encoded mitochondrial kynurenine aminotransferase (KA

Polysaccharides from Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua prevent post-traumatic stress disorder behaviors in mice: Mechanisms from the perspective of synaptic injury, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a kind of depression syndrome, and its occurrence is related to deficiencies of the heart and kidney. Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua replenishes Qi and blood and tonifies the five zang organs, so it is widely used in TCM as a prescription for the treatment of depression syndrome. The polysaccharides in P. cyrtonema Hua (PSP) are the main active components of the herb, but the effects of PSP on PTSD and the mechanisms remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: To investigate the p

Dialectical behaviour therapy for post-traumatic stress disorder after childhood sexual abuse in patients with and without borderline personality disorder: a randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) with co-occurring severe psychopathology such as borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a frequent sequel of childhood sexual abuse (CSA). CSA-related PTSD has been effectively treated through cognitive-behavioural treatments, but it remains unclear whether success can be achieved in patients with co-occurring BPD. The aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy of a newly developed modular treatment programme (DBT-PTSD) that combines principles of dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) and trauma-focused interventions. METHODS: Fema
