BACKGROUND: Strongyloides stercoralis is a neglected soil-transmitted helminth (STH) that leads to significant morbidity in endemic populations. Infection with this helminth has recently been recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a major global health problem to be addressed with ivermectin preventive chemotherapy, and therefore, there is now, the need to develop guidelines for strongyloidiasis control that can be implemented by endemic countries. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of ivermectin preventive chemotherapy (PC) on S. stercoralis prevalence in endemic areas to g…

Opportunistic disseminated strongyloidosis is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. In addition to a high index of clinical suspicion, alerting the microbiologist will help in diagnosing this condition early and institute therapy. We report a 51-year-old male who developed pulmonary infiltrates during the period of chemotherapy-induced neutropenia. Strongyloidosis larvae were found on bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and stool specimens. The patient responded to treatment with albendazole.

Parasitic infections are important complications of organ transplantation that are often overlooked in the differential diagnosis of post-transplantation pyrexial illness. Although their frequency is unknown, they seem to be much less prevalent than bacterial and viral infections. Only 5% of human pathogenic parasites have been reported to cause significant illness in transplant recipients. Infection can occur via transmission with the graft or blood transfusion, or be acquired de novo from the environment. Recrudescence of dormant infection can lead to active disease. Post-transplantation par

We report a case of mixed infection of Strongyloides stercoralis and Clonorchis sinensis, the diagnosis of which was difficult due to lack of specific clinical and imaging features. Definitive diagnosis was finally reached on the basis of detection of the larvae and eggs in the stool of the patient. Timely and effective therapy is of much importance for the prognosis of the disease.

To determine the efficacy of stool examination for detection of Strongyloides infection, 1,350 stool samples collected in Japan, Brazil, and Thailand were examined by four different methods (direct fecal smear, formalin-ether concentration. Harada-Mori filter paper culture, and agar plate culture). The newly developed agar plate culture method was highly effective; more than 96% of the positive cases were diagnosed by this method. The coprologic examination, however, was not sensitive enough for detecting chronic infections because more than 40% of the positive cases were overlooked even when

The authors report 427 cases of strongyloidasis detected in Paris, and emphasize the following points: --High incidence amongst black africans coming from West Africa (17%) ana black carribeans living in France (28.5%). --Lack of hypereosinophilia in two third of cases. --High incidence of successful treatment with thiabendazol with a daily dose 25 mg/kg during four days. --Better results with two running cures.
