The impact of 4-Poster deer self-treatment devices at three locations in Maryland.

From 1998-2002 twenty-five deer self-treatment devices (4-Posters), using 2% amitraz, were operated at three locations in Maryland to determine their effectiveness in controlling blacklegged ticks, Ixodes scapularis Say, and lone star ticks, Amblyomma americanum (L.). Each treatment site was approximately 518 ha and paired with a similar site lacking 4-Posters. Locations varied in deer density, tick abundance, and land use. Flagging for host-seeking ticks showed declines in tick populations at all treatment sites compared to control sites by the third year. By 2002, control of I. scapularis ny

Status of tick distribution in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

On a global basis, ticks transmit a greater variety of pathogenic microorganisms, protozoa, rickettsiae, spirochaets, and viruses than any other arthropods and are among the most important vectors of diseases affecting livestock, humans, and companion animals. Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TTBDs) affect 80% of the world cattle population and are widely distributed throughout the world, particularly in tropical and subtropical countries including India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. Ticks and tick-transmitted infections have coevolved with various wild animal hosts, which constitute the reservoir

Methods currently used for the control of one-host ticks: their validity and proposals for future control strategies.

Available methods for the control of one-host ticks as well as their possible applications in control programmes are reviewed. The advantages and disadvantages of current methods (dipping vats, spray races, hand sprays) are compared to other chemical control methods (ear-tags, pour-ons, systemics, slow-release devices). Their integrated application with other technologies based on immunological, genetic or biological approaches is discussed. Because of the great diversity of geographic, climatic, infrastructural and scientific-technological developments in vast areas of the world, the author c

Epidemiological and clinicopathological factors associated with infection by multiple pathogens transmitted by Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato in naturally infected dogs in the Semiarid area of Northeastern Brazil.

Domestic dogs are frequently exposed to tick-borne pathogens such as Babesia vogeli, Hepatozoon canis, Anaplasma platys and Ehrlichia canis, which can cause a wide range of clinical manifestations, although little is known about the epidemiological and clinicopathological profiles of mono- and co-infections. This study aimed to characterize infection patterns and identify clinical and epidemiological factors associated with mono-infections, and co-infections with two or more pathogens in naturally infected dogs. We analyzed 181 dogs from a hospital population with suspected hemoparasitic infec

16S rRNA profiling of bacterial communities in the brown dog tick Rhipicephalus linnaei from stray dogs in Perak, Malaysia.

Rhipicephalus linnaei is a widespread tick species infesting dogs and capable of transmitting pathogens of veterinary and zoonotic concern. However, its associated bacterial communities remain poorly described in Malaysia. This study profiles the bacterial microbiome of R. linnaei collected from stray dogs in Kampar, Perak, using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing targeting the V3-V4 region. A total of 360 ticks were collected from 13 dogs, of which 290 were pooled according to life stages and sex for microbial profiling. Shannon diversity indices indicated the mixed adult/nymph pool exhibited

Coxiella burnetii in Dogs and Cats from Portugal: Serological and Molecular Analysis.

Dogs and cats are potential sources of infection for some zoonotic diseases such as Q fever, caused by Coxiella burnetii, a multiple host pathogen. Q fever outbreaks in dogs and cats have been related with parturition and abortion events, and ticks have a potential role in the transmission of this pathogen. This study aimed to screen for C. burnetii in dogs and cats, and in ticks collected from infested animals. An observational descriptive study was conducted in Portugal at two time points nine years apart, 2012 and 2021. Sera obtained from dogs and cats (total n = 294) were tested for C. bur

The effects of a pour-on formulation of fluazuron 2.5 % and flumethrin 1 % on populations of Rhipicephalus decoloratus and Rhipicephalus microplus both on and off bovine (Bonsmara breed) hosts.

The present study demonstrated the efficacy of a pour-on formulation of fluazuron 2.5 % and flumethrin 1 % (Drastic Deadline eXtreme®) against Rhipicephalus decoloratus and Rhipicephalus microplus on cattle on pasture previously grazed by experimentally infested animals. Six tick-free cattle were placed on the pasture and treated 7 days later (Day 0) with the pour-on. They were retreated on Days 63, 126 and 189 and monthly tick counts were done. Mean numbers of adult R. decoloratus and/or R. microplus decreased from 53 and 14 on Days 56 and 112 respectively to 2 or less on all other occasions

Identification of a non-host semiochemical from miniature pinscher, Canis lupus familiaris, that repels Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (Acari: Ixodidae).

It is already known that the beagle breed of domestic dogs produces semiochemicals capable of repelling the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato (s.l.). With a view to discovering new non-host semiochemicals as tick repellents, we compared the semiochemicals produced by a putative tick-resistant breed of dog, miniature pinscher, with known tick-resistant (beagle) and tick-susceptible (English cocker spaniel) breeds. Two non-host compounds produced by beagles, i.e. 2-hexanone and benzaldehyde, were shown to be present in samples collected from all three breeds. Furthermore, two c

In search of the Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus in the western-central regions of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

The southern cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, is an economically important tick that parasitises cattle and is found on other host species if they graze with cattle. The R. (B.) microplus is a highly adapted tick species prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. In Africa, it has expanded its range and was reported to supersede the native tick, R. (B.) decoloratus. The objective of the study was to determine the distribution of R. (B.) microplus under different ecological zones in the western-central regions of Eastern Cape Province. Engorged adult blue ticks

Borrelia Diversity and Co-infection with Other Tick Borne Pathogens in Ticks.

Identifying Borrelia burgdorferi as the causative agent of Lyme disease in 1981 was a watershed moment in understanding the major impact that tick-borne zoonoses can have on public health worldwide, particularly in Europe and the USA. The medical importance of tick-borne diseases has long since been acknowledged, yet little is known regarding the occurrence of emerging tick-borne pathogens such as Borrelia spp., Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Rickettsia spp., Bartonella spp., "Candidatus Neoehrlichia mikurensis", and tick-borne encephalitis virus in questing ticks in Romania, a gateway into Europe

[Cattle farmers' perception of the nuisances caused by insects and ticks to cattle in the Canton Jura].

During summer 2005, a survey of 172 farmers from the Canton Jura was carried out to determine their perception of the nuisances caused by insects and ticks to cattle. The presence of ticks was significantly more often spontaneously mentioned by farmers in the Clos-du-Doubs and in the district of Delémont (95% and 72%, respectively) than in Ajoie and in the Franches-Montagnes (29% and 19%, respectively, p < 0.0001). 20% of the farmers perceived the tick populations to be increasing. The following diseases were spontaneously listed: keratoconjunctivitis (59%), mastitis related to flies (31%), hy

Tests to determine LC50 and discriminating doses for macrocyclic lactones against the cattle tick, Boophilus microplus.

Laboratory tests were carried out on larvae and adults of the cattle tick Boophilus microplus to determine the toxicity of macrocyclic lactone acaricides (MLs). Technical and commercial MLs were used in larval packet test (LPT), larval immersion test (LIT) and adult immersion test (AIT). In LIT and AIT the toxicity of MLs was much higher than for LPT. In the AIT, diluting the injectable formulation of MLs in water was as effective as dilution in ethanol+Triton X-100. LC50, LC99.9 and 95% confidence limits were determined so that a discriminating dose (DD) could be set for larval and adult test

Amblyomma tick feeding in relation to host health.

The tick Amblyomma variegatum has been shown by field and controlled laboratory experiments to have a direct causal relationship with severe clinical dermatophilosis. The tick does not transmit the pathogen in the usual sense, either biologically or mechanically. The tick suppresses the immune system of the host, for unknown reasons, and this appears to enable the existing dermatophilosis to become a severe disease. There are other factors involved with the progression of dermatophilosis to clinical disease, such as malnutrition. However, the role of ticks is so distinct that it is likely that

Hosts on which nymphal Ixodes ricinus most abundantly feed.

To identify hosts that may serve as European reservoirs for the agent of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, we determined whether nymphal Ixodes ricinus feed mainly on particular mice (Apodemus flavicollis or A. agrarius), voles (Clethrionomys glareolus) or on sand lizards (Lacerta agilis) and whether the abundance of these hosts corresponds to the seasonal activity of the subadult stages of the vector tick. In all sites, the mice appeared most heavily infested by larvae; at least seven parasitized each mouse, about three per vole and four per lizard. Many fewer nymphal I. ricinus parasitized

Integrated control of ticks and tick-borne diseases of cattle in Africa.

The problems caused by tick and tick-borne diseases for livestock particularly cattle on the African continent are described and discussed. The control of ticks and tick-borne diseases must receive high priority in Africa with regard to both research and control application because of their widespread distribution in areas of high livestock potential and productivity. The conventional methods of tick and tick-borne disease control are discussed and are found to be inadequate in the conditions prevailing in Africa. Methods of integrated control are suggested and discussed in light of recent dev
