PURPOSE: Numerous previous studies already have proven that mandibles with a third molar are significantly more susceptible to angle fracture by external force. Similarly, other data suggest that the absence of a third molar increases the risk of condylar fracture, while concurrently decreasing the risk of angular fracture. We attempt to characterize the effect of a third molar on the incidence of mandibular angle and condylar fractures.
METHODS: This retrospective study reviews data from 385 patients, all of whom were seen in our clinics between February 2006 and November 2009. All data were

Traumatic dental injuries to primary teeth may result in developmental disturbances in the permanent successors because of the close anatomical relationship between primary tooth apices and developing permanent tooth germs. Injuries occurring during crown formation may interfere with normal odontogenesis and lead to crown dilaceration. A 7-year-old healthy boy presented with abnormal eruption of the permanent maxillary central incisors. At 2.5 years of age, he had sustained avulsion of both primary maxillary central incisors and crown fractures of the primary lateral incisors, followed by extr

BACKGROUND/AIM: External replacement resorption (ankylosis-related) is a severe complication leading eventually to tooth loss. Little information exists regarding the influence of variables such as degree of intrusion or treatment method on the development of replacement resolution in intruded permanent incisors. The aim of this study was to report the most frequently involved age group, the preferred type of treatment, and the type and frequency of healing complications. Special attention was paid to the effect of treatment on the occurrence of replacement resorption.

BACKGROUND: In clinical restorative applications, different materials and techniques are used to replace lost tooth tissue and compensate for the fracture resistance that are essential for function. Further investigation is required to ascertain the effect of polyethylene fiber application, which is one of these interventions, on the fracture resistance, fracture location, reparability and crack propagation of premolar teeth restored with direct composite resin restorations. This in-vitro study aimed to evaluate fracture resistance and crack propagation of two bulk-fill composites (BRC) with/w

BACKGROUND: Endocrowns (ECs) are alternatives for rebuilding severely damaged teeth and show superior efficacy in molars over premolars.
OBJECTIVE: The objective of this in vitro study is to evaluate the effects of different preparation designs with short pulp chambers on the mean color change (ΔE), fracture resistance, and failure types of mandibular molar ECs.
METHOD: A total of 40 extracted mandibular molars were treated endodontically and divided into four groups. Samples in groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 had occlusal preparation depths of 5 mm, 3 mm, 3 mm with ferrule, and 3 mm with boxes, resp

OBJECTIVES: For decades, Erich arch bars have been a standard in establishing maxillo-mandibular fixation (MMF). While reliable, the approach risks sharps injury, consumes operating room time, and inflicts gingival trauma. Newer technologies including screw-based techniques and "hybrid" techniques have improved MMF by reducing sharps injuries and operating room time, but risk injury to tooth roots, nerves, and gingiva. This study aims to establish the application, strengths, and limitations of dental occlusion ties as a novel alternative in maxillo-mandibular fixation.

Introduction Endodontically treated posterior teeth are weakened by the loss of coronal structure and require durable restoration to prevent fracture. Conventional post-core-crown systems often involve additional dentin removal, which increases the risk of root fracture. Endocrowns may offer a conservative alternative that uses the pulp chamber for retention. This in vitro study aimed to compare the fracture resistance and failure modes of endodontically treated mandibular first molars restored with lithium disilicate endocrowns versus fiber post-core and lithium disilicate full crowns. Non-physiologic storage of avulsed teeth leads to a high incidence of root resorption, resulting in poor prognosis. This study investigated the suitability of specially composed cell culture media for storage of extracted teeth for up to 48 hours. Autoradiographic investigations revealed that the proliferative activity of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells of teeth stored in cell culture medium for up to 48 hours increased with storage time. Studies on proliferation of PDL cells after storage of teeth in different media for up to 24 hours demonstrated that the proliferative activity is dependent

A prospective study of 140 intruded permanent teeth was done to evaluate the following healing complications: pulp necrosis (PN), root resorption (surface, inflammatory and replacement resorption) (RR) and defects in marginal periodontal healing (MA). These complications were related to various preinjury and injury factors. Age appeared to be related to all three healing complications in that patients younger than 12 years had the lowest complication rate. Stage of root formation at the time of the injury was very strongly related to PN and MA, with immature root formation (i.e. incomplete roo

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Immediate implant placement in fractured molar sites presents surgical challenges because of the complex root anatomy and the risk of buccal plate resorption. The molar socket shield technique with atraumatic tissue handling may help preserve the alveolar architecture and enhance peri-implant outcomes. However, the long-term success of this technique has not been well reported.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical series was to evaluate long-term success in terms of peri-implant tissue health after the molar socket shield technique and immediate implant placement.

This study aimed to investigate the influence of apical root resection level and root canal filling technique on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth. Eighty mandibular premolars were selected and evenly distributed based on similar anatomical characteristics into two groups (n = 40) according to the root canal filling technique: single-cone technique and lateral compaction technique. One week after root canal treatment, each group was further divided into four subgroups (n = 10) based on the level of apical root resection: without root resection, 3 mm, 4 mm, and 5 mm. Follo

Improvements in implant designs have helped advance successful immediate anterior implant placement into fresh extraction sockets. Clinical techniques described in this case enable practitioners to achieve predictable esthetic success using a method that limits the amount of buccal contour change of the extraction site ridge and potentially enhances the thickness of the peri-implant soft tissues coronal to the implant-abutment interface. This approach involves atraumatic tooth removal without flap elevation, and placing a bone graft into the residual gap around an immediate fresh-socket anteri
