Neonatal Retinoblastoma.

From 7% to 10% of all retinoblastomas and from 44% to 71% of familial retinoblastomas in developed countries are diagnosed in the neonatal period, usually through pre- or post-natal screening prompted by a positive family history and sometimes serendipitously during screening for retinopathy of prematurity or other reasons. In developing countries, neonatal diagnosis of retinoblastoma has been less common. Neonatal retinoblastoma generally develops from a germline mutation of RB1, the retinoblastoma gene, even when the family history is negative and is thus usually hereditary. At least one-hal

Significant reduction in the rate of false-negative cervical smears with neural network-based technology (PAPNET Testing System).

False-negative cervical Pap smears may lead to disability or death from carcinoma of the uterine cervix. New computer technology has led to the development of an interactive, neural network-based vision instrument to increase the accuracy of cervical smear screening. The instrument belongs to a new class of medical devices designed to provide computer-aided diagnosis (CADx). To test the instrument's performance, 487 archival negative smears (index smears) from 228 women with biopsy-documented high-grade precancerous lesions or invasive cervical carcinoma (index women) were retrieved from the f

The eSports Medicine: Pre-Participation Screening and Injuries Management-An Update.

Recently, electronic sports (eSports) became one of the growing forms of new media due to the wide diffusion of games and online technologies. Even if there is still a debate about the definition and characterization of eSports, eAthletes train heavily, compete in tournaments, must abide by competition, association, and governing body rules, just like all other athletes. Furthermore, as in any other competitive discipline, there can be injuries. Aberrant sitting posture, repetitive movements, screen vision, prolonged playing hours, and a sedentary lifestyle can lead to several medical hazards

Optimising the surgical outcome in a case of post-traumatic cataract using ultrasound biomicroscopy.

A 12-year-old boy was brought with the chief complaint of diminution of vision in his left eye for the past 1 month. History revealed a blunt trauma to his left eye with a wooden stick 6 weeks ago.Visual acuity was 20/20 and hand movement close to face in right and left eye, respectively, without any relative afferent pupillarydefect. Slit-lamp examination showed a total cataractous lens with signs suggestive of suspected posterior capsular (PC) defect. The PC defect was screened initially using B-scan ultrasound of the posterior segment, followed by confirmation of the same using ultrasound

Suppression of visually induced vertigo: effects of attentional position and modality.

INTRODUCTION: Visually induced vertigo (VIV) is a serious problem because humans rely on vision more than any other sensory system to receive information from their surrounding environment. We investigated whether attention to simultaneous visual or auditory tasks would reduce VIV. METHODS: Subjects were four women and one man who were highly susceptible to VIV and four women who had low susceptibility to VIV. An animation display was prepared to test the effect of overlapping visual task stimuli when the position of the stimuli on the screen was changed. The effect of modality was tested by

USH1H, a novel locus for type I Usher syndrome, maps to chromosome 15q22-23.

Usher syndrome (USH) is a hereditary disorder associated with sensorineural hearing impairment, progressive loss of vision attributable to retinitis pigmentosa (RP) and variable vestibular function. Three clinical types have been described with type I (USH1) being the most severe. To date, six USH1 loci have been reported. We ascertained two large Pakistani consanguineous families segregating profound hearing loss, vestibular dysfunction, and RP, the defining features of USH1. In these families, we excluded linkage of USH to the 11 known USH loci and subsequently performed a genome-wide linkag

The PRECISE-DYAD Neurodevelopmental substudy protocol: neurodevelopmental risk in children of mothers with pregnancy complications.

BACKGROUND: Over 250 million children are not reaching their developmental potential globally. The impact of prenatal factors and their interplay with postnatal environmental factors on child neurodevelopment, is still unclear-particularly in low- and middle-income settings. This study aims to understand the impact of pregnancy complications as well as environmental, psychosocial, and biological predictors on neurodevelopmental trajectories. METHODS: This is an observational cohort study of female and male children (≈3,950) born to women (≈4,200) with and without pregnancy complications (preg

Role of Anti-Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (Anti-VEGF) in the Treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity: A Narrative Review in the Context of Middle-Income Countries.

The rise in preterm births and higher survival rates of premature infants have led to a global increase in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), a vasoproliferative retinal disorder common in premature infants. ROP is one of the leading causes of childhood blindness. Clinical manifestation of ROP ranges from mild abnormal retinal neovascularization to bilateral retinal detachment and vision loss. The incidence of ROP is higher in middle income countries, including India, which has the highest number of global preterm births. Low birth weight and low gestational age are the primary risk factors for

Brain magnetic resonance imaging screening is not useful for HIV-1-infected patients without neurological symptoms.

We investigated the diagnostic usefulness of brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) screening in HIV-1-infected patients without neurological symptoms in detecting intracranial diseases at early stages. In this retrospective analysis, the study patients were HIV-1-infected patients who underwent brain MRI scan in clinical practice between 2001 and 2013. We excluded patients with MRI for (1) follow-up examination for prediagnosed intracranial diseases, (2) cancer staging, (3) screening mycobacterium/bacteria/fungi disease proliferation in the brain, and (4) evaluation for meningitis/encephaliti

Cost-effectiveness of glaucoma interventions in Barbados and Ghana.

PURPOSE: More than 90% of blindness worldwide exists in the developing world, but information on the social and economic burden and the cost-effectiveness of treatment in these settings is often limited or nonexistent. We demonstrate the use of computer modeling to simulate the current and future epidemiology, outcomes, and treatment of primary open-angle glaucoma in high-incidence populations of the developing world. METHODS: A previously validated vision model was modified to simulate the incidence progression and social and economic outcomes of glaucoma in Barbados, which was the source of

A Cross-Sectional Study on the Prevalence, Risk Factors, and Impact of Myopia Among Medical Students in Andhra Pradesh, India.

BACKGROUND: Myopia, or nearsightedness, is increasingly prevalent among students, largely due to prolonged screen time, near work (visually demanding activities performed at a short distance (typically less than 40 cm)), and reduced outdoor activity. Medical students, in particular, are at higher risk due to academic pressure and digital exposure, affecting their vision, performance, and well-being. Early detection and prevention are essential. This study investigates the prevalence, risk factors (genetics, near work, screen use, outdoor activity), and impact of myopia on daily life and academ

Cross-modal fusion of OCT and OCT angiography enface for improved diagnostics of diabetic retinopathy.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision impairment worldwide, highlighting the need for accurate and accessible screening tools. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) provides high-resolution structural information of the retina, whereas OCT angiography (OCTA) offers complementary vascular information that is highly relevant for DR diagnosis. METHODS: In this study, we propose a cross-modal fusion of OCT B-scans with single-channel enface OCTA using a bidirectional cross-modal attention network for automated DR classification. Two independent datasets, OCT500 and UIC

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP): Are We There Yet?

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) affects preterm infants worldwide, involving abnormal development of retinal blood vessels associated with supplemental oxygen use in neonatal care. Although there have been strides in identifying at-risk infants, implementing early screening, updating disease criteria through the International Classification of Retinopathy of Prematurity (ICROP), and developing new therapies, ROP remains a leading cause of preventable blindness. As preterm birth survival rates rise, the incidence of ROP continues to increase and is projected to rise even in countries with abun

Endocrinology concepts for diabetic retinopathy care: bridging systemic metabolic control with retinal disease management and patient education.

Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a leading cause of vision loss and a common microvascular complication of diabetes mellitus. Although diagnosis and management are typically guided by retinal findings, systemic metabolic factors-including glycemic control, diabetes duration, blood pressure, renal function, lipid status, and overall complication burden-play a central role in disease development and progression. Clinical decision-making often remains fragmented across endocrinology, primary care, and ophthalmology, contributing to variability in screening, referral, treatment selection, and patient
