Language-related Cntnap2 gene is differentially expressed in sexually dimorphic song nuclei essential for vocal learning in songbirds.

Multiple studies, involving distinct clinical populations, implicate contactin associated protein-like 2 (CNTNAP2) in aspects of language development and performance. While CNTNAP2 is broadly distributed in developing rodent brain, it shows a striking gradient of frontal cortical enrichment in developing human brain, consistent with a role in patterning circuits that subserve higher cognition and language. To test the hypothesis that CNTNAP2 may be important for learned vocal communication in additional species, we employed in situ hybridization to characterize transcript distribution in the z

Fear conditioned discrimination of frequency modulated sweeps within species-specific calls of mustached bats.

Social and echolocation vocalizations of bats contain different patterns of frequency modulations. An adult bat's ability to discriminate between various FM parameters, however, is not well established. Using changes in heart rate (HR) as a quantitative measure of associative learning, we demonstrate that mustached bats (Pteronotus parnellii) can be fear conditioned to linear frequency modulated (FM) sweeps typically centered at their acoustic fovea (approximately 60 kHz). We also show that HR is sensitive to a change in the direction of the conditional frequency modulation keeping all other p

Liver-derived extracellular matrix as a biologic scaffold for acute vocal fold repair in a canine model.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The objective of the study was to evaluate a naturally derived liver extracellular matrix (L-ECM) scaffold for repair of an acute injury to the vocal fold lamina propria in a canine model. METHODS: The vocal fold lamina propria was removed bilaterally in four dogs. One vocal fold in each dog was repaired with a porcine L-ECM scaffold, which was chosen because it contains hepatocyte growth factor, an antifibrotic growth factor that aids the healing of vocal folds. The other vocal fold was left untreated. At 3 months after surgery, morphologic and histologic analysis was

Detection and discrimination of simple and complex sounds by hearing-impaired Belgian Waterslager canaries.

Belgian Waterslager canaries (BWC) are bred to produce a distinctive low-pitched song with energy restricted to a lower range of frequencies than in other types of canaries. Previous studies have shown a high frequency hearing loss primarily above 2000 Hz that is related to hair cell abnormalities in BWC, but little is known about auditory perception in these birds. Here, frequency, duration, and intensity discrimination, temporal integration, gap detection, and discrimination of temporally reversed harmonic complexes in BWC were measured and compared to normal-hearing non-BWC. BWC had excelle

Toward an evolutionary perspective on conceptual representation: species-specific calls activate visual and affective processing systems in the macaque.

Non-human primates produce a diverse repertoire of species-specific calls and have rich conceptual systems. Some of their calls are designed to convey information about concepts such as predators, food, and social relationships, as well as the affective state of the caller. Little is known about the neural architecture of these calls, and much of what we do know is based on single-cell physiology from anesthetized subjects. By using positron emission tomography in awake rhesus macaques, we found that conspecific vocalizations elicited activity in higher-order visual areas, including regions in

Laryngeal paralysis: a study of 375 cases in a mixed-breed population of horses.

Referred cases (n = 375) of laryngeal paralysis (1985-1998) from a mixed-breed equine population included 351 (94%) cases of recurrent laryngeal neuropathy (RLN) (idiopathic laryngeal hemiplegia) and 24 cases (6%) of laryngeal paralysis from causes other than RLN. Laryngeal movements were classified endoscopically into one of 6 grades, in contrast to the usual 4 grades. The RLN cases had a median grade 4 laryngeal paralysis, of which 96% were left-sided, 2% right-sided and 2% bilaterally affected. RLN cases included 204 (58%) Thoroughbred, 96 (27%) Thoroughbred-cross, 23 (7%) draught, 16 (5%)

High-frequency auditory feedback is not required for adult song maintenance in Bengalese finches.

Male Bengalese finches do not normally change their vocal patterns in adulthood; song is stereotyped and stable over time. Adult song maintenance requires auditory feedback. If adults are deafened, song will degrade within 1 week. We tested whether feedback of all sound frequencies is required for song maintenance. The avian basilar papilla is tonotopically organized; hair cells in the basal region encode high frequencies, and low frequencies are encoded in progressively apical regions. We restricted the spectral range of feedback available to a bird by killing either auditory hair cells encod

Interaction studies in mice of SCH 29851, a potential non-sedating antihistamine, with commonly used therapeutic agents.

SCH 29851 was studied for its ability to interact with selected drugs used in man. The non-sedating antihistamine terfenadine and the sedating antihistamine diphenhydramine were also studied for comparison. SCH 29851 at 80 mg/kg po in mice, a dose about 50 times its ED50 for blocking histamine-induced paw edema in the same species, potentiated the anticonvulsant effects of diazepam. At the high dose of 320 mg/kg po, about 80 times its ED50 for antihistamine effects, SCH 29851 potentiated the ability of high doses of ethanol and hexobarbital to induce loss of righting reflexes (LRR). However, n

Brainstem control of vocalization and its coordination with respiration.

Phonation critically depends on precise controls of laryngeal muscles in coordination with ongoing respiration. However, the neural mechanisms governing these processes remain unclear. We identified excitatory vocalization-specific laryngeal premotor neurons located in the retroambiguus nucleus (RAmVOC) in adult mice as being both necessary and sufficient for driving vocal cord closure and eliciting mouse ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs). The duration of RAmVOC activation can determine the lengths of both USV syllables and concurrent expiration periods, with the impact of RAmVOC activation depe

Mechanisms of larynx and vocal fold development and pathogenesis.

The larynx and vocal folds sit at the crossroad between digestive and respiratory tracts and fulfill multiple functions related to breathing, protection and phonation. They develop at the head and trunk interface through a sequence of morphogenetic events that require precise temporo-spatial coordination. We are beginning to understand some of the molecular and cellular mechanisms that underlie critical processes such as specification of the laryngeal field, epithelial lamina formation and recanalization as well as the development and differentiation of mesenchymal cell populations. Ultrasonographic findings post laryngoplasty in the horse.

Laryngoplasty is commonly used to treat laryngeal hemiplegia in Thoroughbred racehorses. Evaluation of the success of the laryngoplasty is traditionally determined using endoscopy. Laryngeal ultrasonography and normal ultrasonographic appearance have been reported in the standing horse, but post-laryngoplasty and ventriculectomy ultrasonographic evaluation has limited literature coverage. A prospective case series of 10 Thoroughbred racehorses with left laryngeal hemiplegia was examined ultrasonographically and endoscopically prior to 3-10 days, 30-50 days, and 6-12 months after laryngoplasty

Canine awake head-out plethysmography (HOP): characterization of external resistive loading and spontaneous laryngeal paralysis.

We applied a novel head-out plethysmographic (HOP) method to study awake canine responses to external resistive loading and natural laryngeal paralysis. Measurements of inspiratory and expiratory specific airway resistance (sRaw(insp), sRaw(exp)) were obtained before and after uni- and bidirectional loading (R(add) = 5 cmH(2)O/L/s) in large-breed dogs (n = 9). Mean sRaw(insp) after inspiratory, and sRaw(exp) after expiratory loading were 31.4 and 33.3 cmH(2)Os, respectively. Bidirectional loads induced a significantly greater rise in both sRaw(insp) and sRaw(exp) (55.1 and 61.3 cmH(2)Os) compa

Homologous collagen substances for vocal fold augmentation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Dysphonia resulting from failure of glottic closure during voicing is a difficult clinical problem. Recently developed homologous collagen compounds may be beneficial in treating this problem. The objectives of this thesis are to: 1) evaluate the potential site(s) of collagen graft placement in the human vocal fold, quantify the amount of graft material that can be injected into these sites, and determine how these sites are accessed by the currently available surgical tools for injection; 2) determine the effects of the superficial vocal fold implant on laryngeal vibrat

Role of motor unit number estimate electromyography in experimental canine laryngeal reinnervation.

Laryngeal electromyography has been used clinically to differentiate neuromuscular pathology from other causes of vocal fold immobility such as arytenoid dislocation, tumor invasion, or cricoarytenoid joint fixation. Electromyography has also been used to predict the prognosis for nerve recovery in laryngeal paralysis. Existing electromyographic techniques either record activity with voluntary motion or study nerve conduction. In this study a new technique, motor unit number estimation, a commercially available quantitative method of electromyographic analysis, is used to study the progress of
