Meningococcal Vaccination in the United States: Past, Present, And Future.

Meningococcal disease is rare but serious, often striking previously healthy adolescents or young adults, with substantial morbidity and mortality. The incidence of meningococcal disease in the USA declined even prior to the issuance of routine recommendations for vaccination, although an uptick in incidence has occurred since 2022. Routine recommendations for adolescent MenACWY vaccination were issued in 2005, and recommendations for adolescent MenB vaccination based on shared clinical decision-making (SCDM) were issued in 2015. Although meningococcal vaccines are safe and effective, their li

Repetitive Traumatic Brain Injury Causes Neuroinflammation before Tau Pathology in Adolescent P301S Mice.

Repetitive closed head injury (rCHI) is commonly encountered in young athletes engaged in contact and collision sports. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) including rCHI has been reported to be an important risk factor for several tauopathies in studies of adult humans and animals. However, the link between rCHI and the progression of tau pathology in adolescents remains to be elucidated. We evaluated whether rCHI can trigger the initial acceleration of pathological tau in adolescent mice and impact the long-term outcomes post-injury. To this end, we subjected adolescent transgenic mice expressing t

Adolescent knee pain and patellar dislocations are associated with patellofemoral osteoarthritis in adulthood: A case control study.

BACKGROUND: There is a lack of information about the association between patellofemoral osteoarthritis (PFOA) and both adolescent anterior knee pain (AKP) and previous patellar dislocations. METHODS: This case-control study involved 222 participants from our knee arthroplasty database answering a questionnaire. One hundred and eleven patients suffering from PFOA were 1:1 matched by gender with a unicompartmental tibiofemoral arthritis control group. Multivariate correlation and binary logistic regression analysis were performed, with odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) calcul

Body satisfaction and eating attitudes among girls and young women with and without polycystic ovary syndrome.

PURPOSE: The main goal of the current study was to examine the associations between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and body dissatisfaction and eating attitudes in a sample of adolescent girls and young women. Body dissatisfaction is 1 of the strongest predictors of the development of negative outcomes such as low self-esteem, and eating disorders. In adolescent age group of patients, both hirsutism and increased body mass index, appearing with PCOS, may be the leading symptoms also resulting or contributing to body dissatisfaction and eating disorder. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The sample of 9

Adolescents as victims and perpetrators of violence.

The hallmark of adolescent development is risk-taking behavior, mostly benign in nature, with no sequelae in adulthood. For that small number of adolescents for whom risk-taking behaviors are dangerous, for themselves and others, there are common childhood factors that may lead to those behaviors. In studies of adolescent victims, as well as perpetrators, a common theme can be identified, ie, maltreatment. The adolescent who visits Internet chat rooms, meets unknown individuals, and is later sexually assaulted by that individual is often a victim of sexual abuse in earlier childhood. Studies d…

Individual and family predictors of the perpetration of dating violence and victimization in late adolescence.

Teen dating violence is a crime of national concern with approximately one-fourth of adolescents reporting victimization of physical, psychological, or sexual dating violence each year. The present study examined how aggressive family dynamics in both childhood and early adolescence predicted the perpetration of dating violence and victimization in late adolescence. Children (n = 401, 43 % female) were followed from kindergarten entry to the age of 18 years. Early adolescent aggressive-oppositional problems at home and aggressive-oppositional problems at school each made unique predictions to

Abnormal cerebellar morphometry in abstinent adolescent marijuana users.

Functional neuroimaging data from adults have, in general, revealed frontocerebellar dysfunction associated with acute and chronic marijuana (MJ) use. The goal of this study was to characterize cerebellar volume in adolescent chronic MJ users following 1 month of monitored abstinence. Participants were MJ users (n=16) and controls (n=16) aged 16-18 years. Extensive exclusionary criteria included history of psychiatric or neurologic disorders. Drug use history, neuropsychological data, and structural brain scans were collected after 28 days of monitored abstinence. Trained research staff define

ACOG Committee Opinion No. 351, November 2006: The overweight adolescent: prevention, treatment, and obstetric-gynecologic implications.

The number of overweight adolescents has grown to epidemic proportions in the United States. Adolescent females who are overweight have significant health sequelae. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends that all adolescents be screened annually for overweight by determining weight and stature, calculating a body mass index for age percentile, and asking about body image and eating patterns. Health care providers should promote healthy eating and physical activity to adolescent patients and their parents during routine preventive health care visits. Adolescents with

Maternal smoking during pregnancy and risk to boys' conduct disturbance: an examination of the causal hypothesis.

BACKGROUND: We undertook this study to determine whether the widely replicated link between maternal smoking and conduct disturbance (Cd) is better explained by a model of direct causation or of mother-offspring transmission of a latent Cd variable. METHODS: Family data collected on 538 adolescent twin boys from the Virginia Twin Study of Adolescent Behavioral Development (VTSABD) was used to compare two alternative models: 1) a model composed of a latent transmissible factor that influences mother's juvenile conduct symptoms, smoking during pregnancy, and subsequent Cd and smoking in her ado

Adolescent sexual offenders: a self-psychological perspective.

Following a request for assistance in formulating a treatment philosophy for adolescent sexual offenders, a qualitative study of seven adolescent offenders was designed with a view to elaborating pre-offense, and post-offense dynamics. The point of departure was the hypothesis that sexual offending had relation to object relations. It was further hypothesized that offenders' object relations and self-development had been disfigured in childhood and adolescent development. The developmental theories of Mahler, Stern, Winnicott, and Kohut were reviewed in order to shed light on the connection be…

Adolescent Healthcare Autonomy: Mature Minors in the Islamic Context.

Contemporary statutes typically define adulthood at 18, yet Islamic tradition considers puberty and intellectual discernment as markers of maturity. This discrepancy creates significant ethical and legal dilemmas for adolescent healthcare autonomy, particularly in Muslim contexts. Classical Islamic jurisprudence emphasizes cognitive maturity alongside physical development, aligning with modern secular concepts like the mature minor doctrine. Nevertheless, tensions arise when adolescents deemed religiously mature must navigate healthcare decisions restricted by civil statutes. This editorial ad

A Review of Workload-Monitoring Considerations for Baseball Pitchers.

Because of the unique demands of a pitch, baseball players have the greatest percentage of injuries resulting in surgery among high school athletes, with a majority of these injuries affecting the shoulder and elbow due to overuse from throwing. These injuries are believed to occur because of repeated microtrauma to soft tissues caused by the repetitive mechanical strain of throwing. Researchers and practitioners have suggested that baseball pitchers' workloads are a significant risk factor for injury in adolescent players, resulting in lost time and slowing of performance development. The pur

Malaysian adolescent students' needs for enhancing thinking skills, counteracting risk factors and demonstrating academic resilience.

The adolescence period of life comes along with changes and challenges in terms of physical and cognitive development. In this hectic period, many adolescents may suffer more from various risk factors such as low socioeconomic status, substance abuse, sexual abuse and teenage pregnancy. Findings indicate that such disadvantaged backgrounds of Malaysian adolescent students lead to failure or underachievement in their academic performance. This narrative review scrutinises how some of these students are able to demonstrate academic resilience, which is satisfactory performance in cognitive or ac

Palliated congenital heart disease.

The group of patients with palliated complex forms of congenital heart disease presents a challenging and difficult management problem during the adolescent years. In patients not considered to be candidates for more fully palliated procedures that separate the circulations, a bidirectional caval pulmonary shunt, often associated with a systemic to pulmonary shunt, may provide significant palliation for several more decades. However, there remain a significant number of patients who, after some years, may develop increasing problems associated with myocardial failure and the development of ser

Parent-Adolescent Reciprocity in a Conflictual Situation Predicts Peer Interaction in Adolescents With ASD.

Parent-child reciprocity plays a signicant role in shaping children's social interaction skills. The development of conflict management skills throughout childhood and adolescence impacts the individual's social adjustment. The increase in conflictual interaction with one's parents during adolescence affects the transformation of parent-adolescent interaction into a more mutual, equal relationship. Adolescents with ASD and their parents may struggle in this type of interaction due to the adolescents' social and regulatory impairments, in addition to their dependence on their parents' involveme

Multisystem Environmental Factors Elucidate Shared and Distinct Associations With Brain and Behavior in Adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: Environmental factors have long been shown to influence brain structure and adolescent psychopathology. However, almost no research has included environmental factors spanning micro-to-macro-systems, brain structure, and psychopathology in an integrated framework. Here, we assessed the ways and degree to which multisystem environmental factors during late childhood are associated with subcortical volume and psychopathology during early adolescence. METHOD: We used baseline, 2-year follow-up, and 3-year follow-up data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development℠ Study (n = 2,766

Cardiopulmonary Benefits of Exercise in Adolescents.

The cardiovascular system and pulmonary system are two important systems in human body, which play an essential role in maintaining human life and ensuring overall health. Adolescence is a developmental period from 10 to 19 years of age. It is a period of rapid physical and mental development for a person, and in addition, the adolescent's health status will have a tremendous impact on its long-term health status in adulthood. Physical exercise has been found to exert complicated and long-term influence on cardiovascular and respiratory development in children and adolescents. In this chapter,

The differential effects of Autism and Down's syndrome on sexual behavior.

Although sexuality plays a major role in the socialization of people, few studies have examined the sexual behaviors of individuals with developmental disabilities. Because of this, we decided to investigate sexuality in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and Down's syndrome (Ds) and to compare them with typically developing adolescents, by surveying their parents. Specifically, it was hypothesized that young people with ASD would display lower levels over five domains: social behavior, privacy, sex education, sexual behavior, and parental concerns, than peers with Ds and typicall

Moderate prenatal alcohol exposure alters GABAergic transmission and the actions of acute alcohol in the medial central amygdala of adolescent rats.

Individuals with prenatal alcohol exposure (PAE) are at a higher risk for developing alcohol use disorder (AUD). Using a rat model of moderate PAE (mPAE) on gestational day 12 (G12; ∼2nd trimesters in humans), a critical period for amygdala development, we have shown disruptions in medial central amygdala (CeM) function, an important brain region associated with the development of AUD. In addition to this, acute ethanol (EtOH) increases GABA transmission in the CeM of rodents in a sex-dependent manner, a mechanism that potentially contributes to alcohol misuse. How mPAE alters acute alcohol's

Longitudinal trajectories of childhood and adolescent attention deficit hyperactivity disorder diagnoses in three cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is usually conceptualized as a childhood-onset neurodevelopmental disorder, in which symptoms either decrease steadily into adulthood or remain stable. A recent study challenged this view, reporting that for most with ADHD, diagnostic status fluctuates with age. We ask if such a 'fluctuating' ADHD symptom trajectory subgroup is present in other population-based and clinic-based cohorts, centered on childhood and adolescence. METHODS: Cohorts were the population-based Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD: N = 9735), Neurobehav
