Shoulder disorders, including frozen shoulder resulting from stroke-induced hemiplegia, significantly reduce a patient's ability to perform activities of daily living, thereby necessitating repeated rehabilitation. Consequently, extensive research has been conducted on rehabilitation robots to assist in upper-limb motor recovery. The shoulder moves according to the scapulohumeral rhythm. Considering the biomechanical characteristics of the shoulder joint, the rehabilitation robot was designed to replicate a similar kinematic environment using actuators and linkages that emulate the structures

INTRODUCTION: Gradual painful loss of active and passive range of motion in shoulder joint was introduced as adhesive capsulitis (AC). Disabilities in patients with AC are absenteeism from work, loss to leisure time, and recurrent seeking to health care services. The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence of AC following pacemaker implementation. The effect of physical therapy and exercise education was also evaluated to prevent AC following pacemaker implementation.
METHODS: This study is a randomized clinical controlled trial. It was conducted on 62 pacemaker candidates. Patients w

Non traumatic pathology of the shoulder was broken down in four entities: (1) articular stiffness are best treated with rehabilitation and an arthroscopic arthrolysis is rarely recommended; (2) rotator cuff pathology is represented by calcifying and non calcifying tendinitis, partial and full thickness rotator cuff tears; surgical treatment is performed nowadays under arthroscopy; after 50 years old, surgery is indicated after failure of conservative treatment; (3) glenohumeral osteoarthritis and arthritis are best treated with prosthesis; the results are now comparable to hip arthroplasty; (4

Although much has been published regarding shoulder manipulation under anesthesia for the treatment of frozen shoulder, there are no reported long-term results. In 25 patients (26 shoulders) in whom nonoperative treatment for idiopathic frozen shoulder had failed, we performed manipulation under anesthesia. All had had physical therapy for a mean of 6.2 months. Follow-up was by examination until the end of active treatment. Longer-term follow-up was obtained in 18 patients (19 shoulders) by questionnaire and averaged 15 years (range, 8.1 to 20.6 years). There were significant improvements in f

We determined the incidence of invasive group A streptococcal (GAS) disease among children < or =14 years of age in Alberta, Canada, with a focus on infections associated with varicella. During 2000-2002, there were 71 cases of invasive GAS disease among patients in this age group. Fourteen cases occurred in children with varicella (19.7%), for an annual incidence of 0.73 varicella-associated cases per 100,000 children. Necrotizing fasciitis was not noted in patients with invasive GAS disease and varicella.
