Evaluation of an auditory model for echo delay accuracy in wideband biosonar.

In a psychophysical task with echoes that jitter in delay, big brown bats can detect changes as small as 10-20 ns at an echo signal-to-noise ratio of approximately 49 dB and 40 ns at approximately 36 dB. This performance is possible to achieve with ideal coherent processing of the wideband echoes, but it is widely assumed that the bat's peripheral auditory system is incapable of encoding signal waveforms to represent delay with the requisite precision or phase at ultrasonic frequencies. This assumption was examined by modeling inner-ear transduction with a bank of parallel bandpass filters fol

Human rabies: a reemerging disease in Costa Rica?

Two human rabies cases caused by a bat-associated virus variant were identified in September 2001 in Costa Rica, after a 31-year absence of the disease in humans. Both patients lived in a rural area where cattle had a high risk for bat bites, but neither person had a definitive history of being bitten by a rabid animal. Characterization of the rabies viruses from the patients showed that the reservoir was the hematophagous Vampire Bat, Desmodus rotundus, and that a sick cat was the vector.

Outbreak of vampire bat biting in a Venezuelan village.

An outbreak of 154 cases of vampire bat biting in a four-month period in the gold mine of Payapal, a Venezuelan village, is reported. All patients were bitten during the night and the most bites were on their toes. No complication attributed to the bite was reported. Diagnoses of rabies virus made by means of immunofluorescence were negative. A possible reason for this outbreak may been the development of mining areas, with the inhabitants providing an alternative food source for the bats.

The effect of contralateral stimulation on cochlear resonance and damping in the mustached bat: the role of the medial efferent system.

In the unanesthetized mustached bat, stimulation of the ear with an acoustic transient produces damped oscillations which are evident in the cochlear microphonic potential. In this report we demonstrate how the decay time of these oscillations is affected by broadband noise presented to the contralateral ear (CLN). In the absence of CLN, the mean decay time was 1.94 +/- 0.23 ms, but during the presentation of CLN the decay time consistently decreased. The changes were finely graded, the higher the CLN, the greater the change. The effect could be maintained at a constant level for extended peri

Trypanosomes and experimental trypanosomaisis in East African bats.

Using the haematocrit centrifuge technique, four hundred and twenty-seven bats from East Africa were examined for trypanosome infections. Approximately 21% of the bats were found to be infected. The infection rate varied from zero to 73.3%. No trypanosome was found in fruit-eating bats (Megachiroptera). Three species of trypanosomes were found in insect-eating bats (Microchiroptera), none of the trypanosome was infective to mice or rats. The trypanosomes encountered in the survey were Trypanosoma (Schizotrypanum) vespertilionis, T. (Megatrypanum) heybergi, and T. (M). mpapuense. New descriptio…

Molecular insights into species-specific ACE2 recognition of coronavirus HKU5.

Coronaviruses represent a significant zoonotic threat, with host adaptation serving as a pivotal determinant of cross-species transmission. The bat-derived β-coronavirus HKU5 utilizes its spike (S) protein for receptor recognition and viral entry. Here, we report the cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structure of the HKU5 S protein in a closed conformation. Two fatty acids are found in each protomer of the HKU5 S protein, which stabilize the S protein in the closed conformation. Furthermore, we solve the structure of the HKU5 receptor-binding domain (RBD) in complex with the peptidase domain

Serological Surveillance of Betacoronaviruses in Bat Guano Collectors: Pre-COVID-19 Pandemic and Post-SARS-CoV-2 Emergence.

Community-based serosurveillance for emerging zoonotic viruses can provide a powerful and cost-effective measurement of cryptic spillovers. Betacoronaviruses, including SARS-CoV, SARS-CoV-2 and MERS-CoV, are known to infect bats and can cause severe respiratory illness in humans, yet remain under-surveyed in high-risk populations. This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of betacoronaviruses in an occupational cohort in contact with bats before and after the emergence of SARS-CoV-2. Serum samples from pre- and post-COVID-19 pandemic were screened using antigen-based multiplex microsphe

Identification of the proliferative activity of germline progenitor cells in the adult ovary of the bat Artibeus jamaicensis.

Until a few years ago, it was assumed that oocyte renewal did not take place in the ovary of adult organisms; however, the existence of germline progenitor cells (GPCs), which renew the ovarian follicular reserve, has now been documented in mammals. Specifically, in the adult ovary of bats, the presence of cells located in the cortical region with characteristics similar to GPCs, called adult cortical germ cells (ACGC), has been observed. One of the requirements that a GPC must fulfil is to be able to proliferate mitotically, so the evaluation of cell proliferation in ACGC is of utmost importa

Mutations in the Neuraminidase-Like Protein of Bat Influenza H18N11 Virus Enhance Virus Replication in Mammalian Cells, Mice, and Ferrets.

To characterize bat influenza H18N11 virus, we propagated a reverse genetics-generated H18N11 virus in Madin-Darby canine kidney subclone II cells and detected two mammal-adapting mutations in the neuraminidase (NA)-like protein (NA-F144C and NA-T342A, N2 numbering) that increased the virus titers in three mammalian cell lines (i.e., Madin-Darby canine kidney, Madin-Darby canine kidney subclone II, and human lung adenocarcinoma [Calu-3] cells). In mice, wild-type H18N11 virus replicated only in the lungs of the infected animals, whereas the NA-T342A and NA-F144C/T342A mutant viruses were detec

HBV evolution and genetic variability: Impact on prevention, treatment and development of antivirals.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) poses a major global health burden with 260 million people being chronically infected and 890,000 dying annually from complications in the course of the infection. HBV is a small enveloped virus with a reverse-transcribed DNA genome that infects hepatocytes and can cause acute and chronic infections of the liver. HBV is endemic in humans and apes representing the prototype member of the viral family Hepadnaviridae and can be divided into 10 genotypes. Hepadnaviruses have been found in all vertebrate classes and constitute an ancient viral family that descended from non-

Serological Survey of Lyssaviruses in Polish Bats in the Frame of Passive Rabies Surveillance Using an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay.

Background: Bats are known to host a number of nonpathogenic viruses, as well as highly pathogenic viruses causing fatal diseases like rabies. Serological surveys as part of active and passive bat rabies surveillance mainly use seroneutralization assays, demonstrating the presence of lyssavirus-specific antibodies in a variety of European bats, particularly against European bat lyssaviruses type 1 (EBLV-1). Here, we present the first serological survey in European bats of this kind during which European bats from Poland collected in the frame of passive rabies surveillance between 2012 and 201

Fatal swine acute diarrhoea syndrome caused by an HKU2-related coronavirus of bat origin.

Cross-species transmission of viruses from wildlife animal reservoirs poses a marked threat to human and animal health 1 . Bats have been recognized as one of the most important reservoirs for emerging viruses and the transmission of a coronavirus that originated in bats to humans via intermediate hosts was responsible for the high-impact emerging zoonosis, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) 2-10 . Here we provide virological, epidemiological, evolutionary and experimental evidence that a novel HKU2-related bat coronavirus, swine acute diarrhoea syndrome coronavirus (SADS-CoV), is the ae

From individual heterogeneity to population-level overdispersion: quantifying the relative roles of host exposure and parasite establishment in driving aggregated helminth distributions.

In most host-parasite systems, variation in parasite burden among hosts drives transmission dynamics. Heavily infected individuals introduce disproportionate numbers of infective stages into host populations or surrounding environments, causing sharp increases in frequency of infection. Parasite aggregation within host populations may result from variation among hosts in exposure to infective propagules and probability of subsequent establishment of parasites in the host. This is because individual host heterogeneities contribute to a pattern of parasite overdispersion that emerges at the popu

Knowledge, perceptions and attitude of a community living around a colony of straw-coloured fruit bats (Eidolon helvum) in Ghana after Ebola virus disease outbreak in West Africa.

A large population of straw-coloured fruit bats (Eidolon helvum) colonizes a prime area in the city of Accra where several public amenities are located. Although the colony is positive to several zoonotic viruses including the Ebola virus, there is limited information on the social dimensions of the existence of the bats. As a step towards effective response to health risk and conservation of the bats, this study assessed the knowledge and attitude of the community living around the bats and determined their level of environmental and public health consciousness. The community generally lacks

Close genetic relatedness of picornaviruses from European and Asian bats.

Our investigation of 1004 faecal specimens from European bats for picornaviruses by broadly reactive nested reverse transcription-PCR found picornaviral RNA in 28 samples (2.8 %). Phylogenetic analysis of the partial 3D genomic region suggested that one bat virus belonged to the species Enterovirus G (EV-G, formerly Porcine enterovirus B). Bat infection was supported by relatively high EV-G concentrations of 1.1×106 RNA copies per gram of faeces. All other bat viruses belonged either to the bat-associated genus Mischivirus, or to an unclassified Picornaviridae group distantly related to the ge

Retinal projections in the short-tailed fruit bat, Carollia perspicillata, as studied using the axonal transport of cholera toxin B subunit: Comparison with mouse.

To provide a modern description of the Chiropteran visual system, the subcortical retinal projections were studied in the short-tailed fruit bat, Carollia perspicillata, using the anterograde transport of eye-injected cholera toxin B subunit, supplemented by the silver-impregnation of anterograde degeneration following eye removal, and compared with the retinal projections of the mouse. The retinal projections were heavily labeled by the transported toxin in both species. Almost all components of the murine retinal projection are present in Carollia in varying degrees of prominence and lateral…

Comparative studies on the genetic, antigenic and pathogenic characteristics of Bokeloh bat lyssavirus.

Bokeloh bat lyssavirus (BBLV), a novel lyssavirus, was isolated from a Natterer's bat (Myotis nattererii), a chiropteran species with a widespread and abundant distribution across Europe. As a novel lyssavirus, the risks of BBLV to animal and human health are unknown and as such characterization both in vitro and in vivo was required to assess pathogenicity and vaccine protection. Full genome sequence analysis and antigenic cartography demonstrated that the German BBLV isolates are most closely related to European bat lyssavirus type 2 (EBLV-2) and Khujand virus and can be characterized within…
