Educator Preparedness and Teachers' Self-Efficacy for Culturally Diverse Classrooms: A Multicountry Analysis of TALIS 2018.

BACKGROUND: Teacher readiness is widely regarded as central to inclusive education, yet evidence is limited on how different routes to that readiness, initial teacher education versus continuing professional development (PD), relate to teachers' confidence in diverse classrooms. This study examined the associations of inclusion-focused PD participation and initial-training preparedness with teachers' self-efficacy for teaching culturally diverse classes, and with classroom climate, across a large set of education systems. METHODS: Using the OECD TALIS 2018 lower secondary teacher database (15

Association between dry eye disease and temperature is modified by residential greenness: case-crossover study in Beijing, China.

BACKGROUND: Dry eye disease (DED) is one of the most prevalent eye conditions globally. While the harmful effects of air pollution on DED are well-documented, the role of temperature—an important factor linked to climate change—remains less understood. Green spaces have been identified as a potential way to reduce health risks from climate change, yet few studies have examined their combined influence on DED. METHODS: A time-stratified case-crossover study was conducted using data of 71,069 first-time outpatient visits for DED at Peking University People’s Hospital in Beijing, from January 201

Potential risk zones and climatic factors influencing the occurrence and persistence of avian influenza viruses in the environment of live bird markets in Bangladesh.

Live bird markets (LBMs) are critical for poultry trade in many developing countries that are regarded as hotspots for the prevalence and contamination of avian influenza viruses (AIV). Therefore, we conducted weekly longitudinal environmental surveillance in LBMs to determine annual cyclic patterns of AIV subtypes, environmental risk zones, and the role of climatic factors on the AIV presence and persistence in the environment of LBM in Bangladesh. From January 2018 to March 2020, we collected weekly fecal and offal swab samples from each LBM and tested using rRT-PCR for the M gene and subtyp

Environmental and geographical factors influence malaria transmission in KwaZulu-Natal province, South Africa.

The malaria burden remains largely concentrated in sub- Saharan Africa. South Africa, a country within this region, has made significant progress toward malaria elimination. However, malaria continues to be endemic in three of its nine provinces: Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), which are located in the northern part of the country and share borders with Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Mozambique. This study focuses on KZN, where district municipalities report monthly malaria cases ranging from zero to 8,981. Fitting Bayesian zero-inflated models in the INLA R package, we assessed the eff

Physical constraints on thermoregulation and flight drive morphological evolution in bats.

Body size and shape fundamentally determine organismal energy requirements by modulating heat and mass exchange with the environment and the costs of locomotion, thermoregulation, and maintenance. Ecologists have long used the physical linkage between morphology and energy balance to explain why the body size and shape of many organisms vary across climatic gradients, e.g., why larger endotherms are more common in colder regions. However, few modeling exercises have aimed at investigating this link from first principles. Body size evolution in bats contrasts with the patterns observed in other

Predicting spatio-temporal population patterns of Borrelia burgdorferi, the Lyme disease pathogen.

The causative bacterium of Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi, expanded from an undetected human pathogen into the etiologic agent of the most common vector-borne disease in the United States over the last several decades. Systematic field collections of the tick vector reveal increases in the geographic range and prevalence of B. burgdorferi-infected ticks that coincided with increases in human Lyme disease incidence across New York State. We investigate the impact of environmental features on the population dynamics of B. burgdorferi. Analytical models developed using field collections of nea

Modeling the Sensitivity of Blacklegged Ticks (Ixodes scapularis) to Temperature and Land Cover in the Northeastern United States.

The prevalence of Lyme disease and other tick-borne diseases is dramatically increasing across the United States. While the rapid rise in Lyme disease is clear, the causes of it are not. Modeling Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae), the primary Lyme disease vector in the eastern United States, presents an opportunity to disentangle the drivers of increasing Lyme disease, including climate, land cover, and host populations. We improved upon a recently developed compartment model of ordinary differential equations that simulates I. scapularis growth, abundance, and infection with Borrelia bu

Bayesian codon substitution modelling to identify sources of pathogen evolutionary rate variation.

Phylodynamic reconstructions rely on a measurable molecular footprint of epidemic processes in pathogen genomes. Identifying the factors that govern the tempo and mode by which these processes leave a footprint in pathogen genomes represents an important goal towards understanding infectious disease evolution. Discriminating between synonymous and non-synonymous substitution rates is crucial for testing hypotheses about the sources of evolutionary rate variation. Here, we implement a codon substitution model in a Bayesian statistical framework to estimate absolute rates of synonymous and non-s

The Interdependence between Schistosome Transmission and Protective Immunity.

Mass drug administration (MDA) for control of schistosomiasis is likely to affect transmission dynamics through a combination of passive vaccination and reduction of local transmission intensity. This is indicated in phenomenological models of immunity and the impact of MDA, yet immunity parameters in these models are not validated by empirical data that reflects protective immunity to reinfection. There is significant empirical evidence supporting the role of IgE in acquired protective immunity. This is proposed to be a form of delayed concomitant immunity, driven at least in part by protecti

Large-scale mapping of predicted tick communities (Ixodidae) identifies spatial patterns of tick assemblages.

Tick-borne pathogen systems are inherently multi-species networks, yet most predictive frameworks model vector distributions independently, thereby overlooking community structure. Here, we develop a stacked approach to infer and map tick communities from species distribution models (SDMs), leveraging habitat suitability to reconstruct patterns of co-occurrence across large spatial extents. We applied this framework to eight tick species across the Iberian Peninsula using high-resolution climatic and vegetation data (1 km resolution; years 2010-2025). Species-level predictions were integrated

Further insight into adolescent personal identity statuses: Differences based on self-esteem, family climate, and family communication.

INTRODUCTION: During adolescence, youngsters are faced with the challenging task of forming an identity. This process can be either supported or hindered by adolescents' family context. The present study used a six-process model of personal identity including the five identity processes described by the dual-cycle model of identity (exploration in breadth, commitment making, exploration in depth, identification with commitment, and ruminative exploration) as well as a sixth identity process of reconsideration of commitment, commonly described in the three-factor model of identity. Evidence for Geographic Variation in Life-Cycle Processes Affecting Phenology of the Lyme Disease Vector Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in the United States.

The seasonal activity pattern of immature Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) varies geographically in the United States, which may affect the efficiency of transmission cycles of pathogens transmitted by this species. To study the factors that determine seasonality, a multiyear study at seven sites across the geographic range of I. scapularis systematically collected questing ticks by flagging/dragging, and feeding ticks by capture of their hosts. The observed phenology patterns were consistent with previous studies reporting geographic variation in seasonal tick activity. Predictions of

Transport impacts on atmosphere and climate: Aviation.

Aviation alters the composition of the atmosphere globally and can thus drive climate change and ozone depletion. The last major international assessment of these impacts was made by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1999. Here, a comprehensive updated assessment of aviation is provided. Scientific advances since the 1999 assessment have reduced key uncertainties, sharpening the quantitative evaluation, yet the basic conclusions remain the same. The climate impact of aviation is driven by long-term impacts from CO2 emissions and shorter-term impacts from non-CO2 emissions

Effects of global and climate change on the freshwater-seawater interface movement in a Mediterranean karst aquifer of Mallorca Island.

Karst aquifers are globally prized freshwater sources, posing a significant preservation challenge. These aquifers typically exhibit dual or even triple porosities, encompassing matrix, fractures-fissures and conduits, rendering them highly responsive to variations in chemical characteristics and hydraulic head. In coastal regions, these aquifers often possess extensive subsurface conduit networks intricately linked to the rock matrix, facilitating groundwater discharge into the sea. Therefore, they display acute sensitivity to seawater intrusion, swiftly reacting to changes in precipitation a

Elevation dependent response of soil organic carbon stocks to forest windthrow.

Storms represent a major disturbance factor in forest ecosystems, but the effects of windthrows on soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks are poorly quantified. Here, we assessed the SOC stocks of windthrown forests at 19 sites across Switzerland spanning an elevation gradient from 420 to 1550 m, encompassing a strong climatic gradient. Results show that the effect size of disturbance on SOC stocks increases with the size of the initial SOC stocks. The largest windthrow-induced SOC losses of up to 29 t C ha-1 occurred in high-elevation forests with a harsh climate developing thick organic layers. In

Pleistocene sea level changes and crocodile population histories on the Isthmus of Panama: A comment on Avila-Cervantes et al. (2020).

Avila-Cervantes et al. proposed that glacial-interglacial sea level changes played an important role in the evolutionary and demographic histories of the crocodile Crocodylus acutus on the Isthmus of Panama. However, the study used erroneous sea level proxy data that produced flawed paleogeographic reconstructions. We present new paleogeographic reconstructions and review the timing of, and proposed mechanisms behind, the demographic events estimated by Avila-Cervantes et al.. With the data currently available, we find little evidence to support the hypothesis that sea level changes drove popu

Chronic Kidney Disease in Agricultural Communities.

Patients residing in agricultural communities have a high risk of developing chronic kidney disease. In the Great Plains, geo-environmental risk factors (eg, variable climate, temperature, air quality, water quality, and drought) combine with agro-environmental risk factors (eg, exposure to fertilizers, soil conditioners, herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides) to increase risk for toxic nephropathy. However, research defining the specific influence of agricultural chemicals on the progression of kidney disease in rural communities has been somewhat limited. By linking retrospective clinical d
