[Media calcinosis from the viewpoint of the cardiologist].

Mediacalcinosis (MC) represents a disease of the muscular type arteries characterized by progredient calcification of the media. MC involves most frequently the arteries of the lower extremities. However, a more extensive disease involving the arteries of the pelvis and the abdominal aorta is common. A systemic extension of MC with the involvement of the coronary arteries has been reported, but is however, according to the present opinion, rather rare. MC occurs isolated (primary MC) as well as associated with other diseases (secondary MC). The secondary forms are most frequently due to diabet

[Respiratory function diagnosis during sleep: possibilities and limitations].

Diagnosis of the respiratory function during sleep is based on a continuous recording of all necessary signals. These are basically respiratory flow, respiratory effort and blood gases. In addition, sleep stages, body position and cardiovascular function have to be monitored to distinguish the different forms of sleep related breathing disorders as there are obstructive, mixed and central apnea and hypoventilation. The main evaluation is a simple counting of events and the calculation of an index related to total sleep time. These indices are of limited value because all information about the

Computer-assisted analysis of Mycobacterium avium fingerprints using insertion elements IS1245 and IS1311 in a Caribbean setting.

A total of 33 clinical isolates of the Mycobacterium avium complex from 25 patients, identified by means of biochemical and cultural characteristics, the Accuprobe system and DT1/DT6 PCR, were further analysed using novel insertion elements IS1245 and IS1311 in a French Caribbean setting. PvuII-cleaved DNA and non-radioactive Southern hybridization and detection systems were used for fingerprinting with both IS elements. The data confirmed the specificity of the two probes for M. avium in our setting and highlighted a significant proportion of M. intracellulare-infected patients in this region

Silane, Germane, and Stannane Activation by an Iron Dinitrogen Compound to Access Dimetallotetrylides.

Upon adding Group 14 hydride gases to the recently prepared iron dinitrogen dimer, [(Triphos)Fe]2(μ-N2) (Triphos = H3CC(CH2PPh2)3), a generalized methodology for the preparation of diirontetrylides has been realized. The all-bond activation of SiH4 afforded the corresponding silicide, (Triphos)(H)2Fe═Si═Fe(H)2(Triphos), which was found to feature a linear Fe2Si core by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Activation of GeH4 and SnH4 by [(Triphos)Fe]2(μ-N2) yielded (Triphos)(H)2Fe═Ge═Fe(H)2(Triphos) and (Triphos)(H)2Fe═Sn═Fe(H)2(Triphos), respectively, which exhibit bent cores and short iron-tetre

Natural Hazard Risks in LCA for the Built Environment: Managing Stochastic Inputs in Stochastic Process-Based LCA.

Natural hazards affect the environmental sustainability of the built environment because of the environmental losses caused, such as the environmental impacts of the repairs and the indirect effects of downtime. Asset performance assessment workflows allow for probabilistically connecting frequent and infrequent hazards with building response, damages, and environmental losses. Environmental life cycle assessment is emerging as the preferred methodology to derive environmental losses, but current tools struggle with interoperability issues, prompting simplifications in converting the material

Digital intelligence-enabled tumor microbiome research: from mechanistic dissection to clinical translation.

Tumor-associated microbiomes are integral components of the tumor microenvironment, modulating tumorigenesis and progression through immune and metabolic pathways. Microbiome data are high-dimensional, sparse, and compositional, which limits conventional analytical approaches. Digital intelligence-an umbrella term encompassing artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML), big-data analytics, and multi-omics integration-has emerged as a powerful paradigm for tumor microbiome research. In this review, we delineate the applications of digital intelligence across the full pipeline: intellig

Multiscale systems modelling of communication networks in brain metastasis.

Brain metastasis remains a major clinical challenge because intracranial progression and therapeutic resistance arise not only from tumour-intrinsic programmes but also from coordinated communication across molecular, cellular, spatial and systemic scales. In this Review, we integrate findings from spatial transcriptomics/proteomics, single-cell and multimodal omics, and computational systems modelling to frame brain metastasis as a multiscale communication disorder in which immune, glial, vascular and systemic networks collectively shape tumour-permissive ecosystems. We discuss how network-ba

Exponential cigarette-pack-year index (ECPYI).

OBJECTIVES: Traditional tobacco exposure metrics like the cigarette-pack-year (CPY) fail to capture the stronger, non-linear influence of smoking duration relative to intensity on lung cancer risk. To address this, the Exponential Cigarette-Pack-Year Index (ECPYI) was proposed, a novel metric that incorporates the square of cigarette consumption and the fourth power of smoking duration to better reflect their differential effects on risk. STUDY DESIGN: Methodological formulation and simulation-based comparative analysis. METHODS: ECPYI is calculated using the formula: ECPYI = ln (cigarettes2

Semi-Supervised Object Detection: A Survey on Progress from CNN to Transformer.

The impressive advancements in semi-supervised learning have driven researchers to explore its potential in object detection tasks within the field of computer vision. Semi-Supervised Object Detection (SSOD) leverages a combination of a small labeled dataset and a larger, unlabeled dataset. This approach effectively reduces the dependence on large labeled datasets, which are often expensive and time-consuming to obtain. Initially, SSOD models encountered challenges in effectively leveraging unlabeled data and managing noise in generated pseudo-labels for unlabeled data. However, numerous recen

Artificial intelligence in preclinical nonhuman primate xenotransplantation: bridging the gap from data complexity to clinical precision.

Nonhuman primate (NHP) preclinical models remain an indispensable gateway for translating xenotransplantation into human clinical trials. These models generate high-dimensional immunological, physiological, behavioral, and histopathological datasets that are difficult to interpret with conventional analytical approaches and that limit the precision of translational inference. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) may help address this complexity: computer vision can support continuous noninvasive behavioral phenotyping and pain assessment; anomaly detection algorithms can extr

Application of read-across to data-poor N-nitrosamines: N-nitroso-ulifloxacin, a case study.

The read-across approach is recognized as an acceptable methodology for addressing carcinogenic risk associated with N-nitrosamine drug substance-related impurities (NDSRIs) that are data-poor. This work presents a read-across case study that evaluates N-nitroso-ulifloxacin (an impurity lacking toxicological data), using N-nitroso-ciprofloxacin as a surrogate analogue. Comparative analysis of the similarity across the structural, physicochemical, metabolic, and toxicological domains demonstrates a high degree of structural similarity (both global and, most importantly, local), along with compa

This study delineates the rational design, microwave-assisted synthesis, and comprehensive pharmacological evaluation of a novel series of nonacidic biarylcarbaldehydes (1a-l) as selective COX-2 inhibitors. The methodology involved substituting the conventional acidic pharmacophore in NSAIDs with a neutral aldehyde to enhance gastrointestinal safety. The derivatives were synthesized with high yields (90%-99%) through an optimized Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling procedure. In silico ADMET analysis demonstrated excellent drug-like characteristics and oral bioavailability throughout the series. Doc
