Giant condylomata (Buschke-Löwenstein tumours): our case load in surgical treatment and review of the current therapies.

BACKGROUND: Buschke-Löwenstein tumour (BLT) or giant condyloma is a verrucous infiltrating lesion, due to a sexually transmitted virus infection, human papilloma virus subtypes 6 and 11. Poor hygiene, promiscuity, chronic irritation and cellular immunocompromised states are often implicated in its genesis. Typical treatment of giant condyloma includes imiquimod cream, podophillin resin, cryotherapy, laser surgery, tangential shave excision with electrocautery. OBJECTIVE: The authors report their case load in the treatment of giant condyloma and the review of the modern therapies. METHODS AND

[What's new in dermatological therapy?].

Therapeutics is our daily tool to advance patient care. Although some may perceive a certain stagnation, the goal of this review was to choose among the hundreds of articles published between January and September 2012 those that seemed to contribute the greatest innovation. It is certainly valuable to observe that all include antibodies, cytokines, or conversely chemokine inhibitors, small regulatory molecules or even cells. This diversity illustrates the vitality of the research in dermatology, which covers fields from inflammatory and autoimmune diseases to vascular and infectious diseases.

Genital human Papillomavirus infection in patients with autoimmune inflammatory diseases.

Treatment advances achieved over the last few years have radically changed the management of patients with autoimmune inflammatory diseases requiring conventional or biological immunosuppressive therapy. These diseases and the drugs used to treat them increase the rate of infections, including genital infections due to the human Papillomavirus (HPV). Genital HPV infections have been extensively studied in organ transplant recipients, HIV-infected patients, and patients with congenital immune deficiencies. Although genital HPV infections usually manifest as benign lesions of the external genita

Oncogenic HPV infection resembling pseudocondyloma of vulvae: a descriptive study of 31 cases.

OBJECTIVE: Report a special type of human papillomavirus infection resembling pseudocondyloma of vulvae. The characteristics of the clinical manifestation and subtypes of the HPV infection were studied. METHODS: Thirty-one women with unprotected sex and genital warts resembling pseudocondyloma of vulvae were involved in this study. The clinical and histological manifestations were characterized. The genotypes of human papillomavirus were determined by a reverse hybridization of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) RESULTS: Thirteen HPV genotypes were detected from 31 cases. Of 13 genotypes, 3 were

Human papillomaviruses vaccine: a dermatologic perspective.

Human papillomaviruses (HPV) are responsible for both benign anogenital warts and malignant disease in humans, especially cervical cancer. Dermatologists in India recognize a great many cases of anogenital warts, and afflicted individuals may be at increased risk of coinfection with oncogenic HPV types. For this reason, dermatologists are in a position to identify potential carriers of oncogenic HPV types in the population. By targeting these individuals and their partners, as well as unaffected individuals for vaccination with the quadrivalent HPV vaccine, dermatologists have the ability to i

The role of human papillomavirus in common skin conditions: current viewpoints and therapeutic options.

A direct causal relationship between human papillomavirus (HPV) infection and cervical neoplasia is well-accepted, but the specific role of HPV in the pathogenesis of other cutaneous disorders is less clear. This article explores the role of HPV in 2 common disorders associated with considerable morbidity: external genital and perianal warts (EGWs) and actinic keratosis (AK). Because the potential role of HPV in the pathogenesis of EGW and AK may have implications that influence management, the available topical pharmacotherapy for each disorder also is reviewed. External genital and perianal

[Epidemiology and management of patients with ano-genital warts in Italy].

PURPOSE: Overview of the impact of ano-genital warts in Italy. COMMENTS: In Italy, the HPV infection is not subject to mandatory reporting, the available epidemiological data come from sentinel surveillance of STIs and show a high spread among young people under 25 years and an increase in reports after 2004. Although ano-genital warts are a benign disease, nonetheless they are characterized by a big relational and psycho-sexual impact, due also to high recurrence rates. CONCLUSIONS: It is extremely useful to promote information activities, education in safe sex, early diagnosis and treatmen

Human papilloma virus: prevention and treatment.

Knowledge regarding the relationship between the human papillomavirus (HPV) and many diseases continues to grow. Clinicians should not only understand how to treat HPV-related diseases but offer strategies to prevent them. This understanding encompasses patient education and counseling regarding modifiable lifestyle factors and patient participation in organized secondary screening programs. Finally, for the first time in history, patients may be offered safe and effective vaccines that promise to have a dramatic impact on these conditions.

An unusual presentation of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in a black epidermodysplasia verruciformis (EV) patient.

A 25-year-old black man had a 20-year history of disseminated plaques on his body. Two years before consultation he noticed several tumors on the genitalia. Physical examination revealed generalized, coalescing, hypopigmented plaques with a very defined and keratotic border that resembled actinic porokeratosis. (Fig. 1). Multiple verrucous and moist tumors were observed on the scrotum (Fig. 2). His past medical history was unremarkable, and no family member had the disease. Histology of the body lesions revealed hyperkeratosis with a horny-layer, basket-weave appearance, large and clear blue-g

The diagnosis and treatment of human papillomavirus-mediated genital lesions.

Genital warts (condyloma acuminatum, venereal warts) are common highly contagious benign epithelial lesions occurring on the genitals, perianal area, and inguinal folds, and are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). Diagnosis is based largely on the clinical appearance of lesions. New home-based treatments, including podofilox and imiquimod, have revolutionized the therapeutic management of genital warts, empowering patients to participate in their own treatment with products that primarily have local side effects. This article reviews the diagnosis and treatment (office based and home based)

[Surgical correction of male external genitalia giant condyloma acuminata].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficiency of curettage combining circumcision on giant condyloma acuminata(CA) in male external genitalia, the relationship between recurrence and curettage depth, the possibility of HPV infection in PBMC after operation. METHODS: Curettage combining circumcision was carried out on 50 cases with CA. The removed wart and wound surface tissues were examined under light microcope and for HPV-DNA detection by PCR. HPV-DNA was detected in PBMC during < or =1 and > or =2 weeks after operation. RESULTS: (1) 46 cases were cured completely after one treating (once

Buschke-Löwenstein tumor in childhood: a case report.

Buschke-Löwenstein tumor or giant condyloma is a warty verrucous lesion, characterized by slow growth, locally infiltrating and disfiguring lesions. Despite its benign histological appearance and low risk of metastasis, Buschke-Löwenstein tumor is an intermediate lesion between condyloma acuminatum and verrucous carcinoma. It has been linked to human papilloma virus, mainly subtypes 6 and 11. Other factors implicated in this disease include poor hygiene, chronic irritation, promiscuity, and cellular immunocompromised states. It rarely occurs in children. The first line of treatment is radical

Critical appraisal of commonly used treatment for genital warts.

Genital warts are one of the most commonly reported sexually transmitted diseases worldwide. A variety of treatment options are available but few have been assessed in large-scale, randomized, placebo-controlled trials. Provider-applied surgical and non-surgical treatments have traditionally been the therapies of choice. Surgical therapies, including cryotherapy, electrotherapy, laser surgery and surgical excision, are generally equivalent in terms of wart clearance rates, but are associated with high rates of wart recurrence. Trichloroacetic acid is a widely used non-surgical therapy, but lit
