Cystic rete testis in a central bearded dragon (Pogonavitticeps).

The rete testis forms from the mesonephric tubules in a series of interconnected channels in which spermatozoa travel in a high volume of fluid between the seminiferous tubules and efferent ductules. Cystic rete testis can be identified by uni- or multilocular cysts with a wall lined by low cuboidal epithelial cells and a dense fibrous stroma. An 11-year-old male central bearded dragon (Pogona vitticeps) was evaluated for a coelomic mass. The animal had no other clinical signs apart from coelomic mass effect. Exploratory surgery revealed a mass in the region of the right testis that was excise

Ultrastructural characterization and biochemical profile of human gross cystic breast disease.

Human gross cystic breast disease is a benign condition affecting about 7-10% of adult women occurring with the highest incidence in the premenopausal decade. Although breast cysts do not represent a preneoplastic condition per se, several studies indicate an increased breast cancer risk in women affected by this pathology. In this report we study 115 breast cystic fluid samples obtained by needle-aspiration from women with gross cystic breast disease. The samples were analysed biochemically and the cells contained therein were observed at the electron microscope. According to their biochemica

[Case of aneurysmal bone cyst of the skull].

A case of aneurysmal bone cyst of the right temporal bone was reported. The patient was a 36-year-old male who was admitted to our hospital with complaints of decreased right hearing and transient impairment of the right vision. A large tumor was palpated on the right temporal bone. Neurological examinations revealed right auditory loss, along with right facial weakness of peripheral type, and minimal pyramidal signs on the right side. The results of the laboratory examination proved to be normal. Neuroradiological examinations tended to be quite impressive. Plain x-ray films of the skull show

Cerebrospinal fluid flow imaging by using phase-contrast MR technique.

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) spaces include ventricles and cerebral and spinal subarachnoid spaces. CSF motion is a combined effect of CSF production rate and superimposed cardiac pulsations. Knowledge of CSF dynamics has benefited considerably from the development of phase-contrast (PC) MRI. There are several disorders such as communicating and non-communicating hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation, syringomyelic cyst and arachnoid cyst that can change the CSF dynamics. The aims of this pictorial review are to outline the PC MRI technique, CSF physiology and cerebrospinal space anatomy, to describ

Ligamentum flavum hematoma in the lumbar spine.

A previously healthy 45-year-old woman presented with ligamentum flavum hematoma manifesting as radicular leg pain. Neurological examination findings were consistent with L-5 root compression. An old hematoma inside the degenerated ligamentum flavum was drained. The cyst showed no connection to the facet joint. Complete resection of the mass was performed, resulting in excellent pain relief. The most common cystic lesion in the lumbar spine is synovial cyst associated with the facet joints, but ligamentum flavum hematoma should be included in the differential diagnosis. The preoperative diagno

Delayed-onset pineal abscess following transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary adenoma: a case report.

A 41-year-old woman suffered fever, speech disturbance and confusion four months after transsphenoidal surgery for pituitary macroadenoma. Meanwhile, the patient had been well except for transient asymptomatic postoperative pneumocephalus without cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) rhinorrhoea. Brain computed tomographic scan revealed a peripherally enhancing pineal abscess which superimposed on a preexisting pineal cyst. CSF findings showed elevated leukocyte count and positive bacterial culture. Three weeks of intensive antibiotic therapy and surgical evacuation of the pineal abscess ensued. The patie

[Escherichia coli meningitis in a 16-month old infant revealing a posterior fossa epidermoid cyst].

UNLABELLED: Meningitis due to Escherichia coli is rare, and generally observed in very particular circumstances, such as neonatal period, anatomical anomalies or in immune-deficient patients. CASE REPORT: A 16-month-old male infant was admitted for acute meningitis. E coli was detected in the cerebro-spinal fluid (CSF). As appropriate antibiotic treatment proved inefficient, a cerebral computerised tomography (CT) scan was performed, revealing an epidermoid cyst of the posterior fossa. The cyst was resected after CSF sterilisation. Postoperative recovery was satisfactory. CONCLUSION: When an

Zygomatic salivary cyst with mucocele formation in a cat.

An eight-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat had a zygomatic salivary cyst with associated mucocele formation. A fluctuating swelling developed ventral to the right eye, causing bulging of the lower eyeild, and a corresponding swelling was present in the caudal vestibule of the oral cavity. Cytological examination of the fluid obtained from aspiration of the swelling was consistent with the appearance of saliva. A tentative diagnosis of zygomatic salivary mucocele was made. Surgical exploration and resection of the swelling demonstrated the presence of a multilobular cystic zygomatic

[A successful case of mediastinal cystic lymphangioma and statistical considerations in the Japanese literature].

A 38-year-old man with large mediastinal cystic lymphangioma was successfully treated. Although he was asymptomatic, mass lesion on chest X-ray, pointed out two years ago, has rapidly increased in its size. The operation was performed through right thoracotomy and the cyst was unilobular and 10 X 8 X 8 cm in size, presented in the right upper anterior mediastinum. It contained about 250 ml of yellowish clear fluid with very thin wall, which was verified as tissue lymph by biochemical examination. Only 27 cases of mediastinal cystic lymphangiomas have been reported in the Japanese literature by

Computerised tomography in the evaluation of expansile lesions arising from the skull vault in childhood--a report of 5 cases.

Expansile lesions of the skull vault are rare in childhood, and often present as relatively asymptomatic calvarial swellings. The cases of 5 children with expansile lesions of the skull vault due to both benign and malignant primary bone lesions are described. The value of computerised tomography in demonstrating that the "tumour" arises primarily from the skull vault as opposed to the underlying brain, and in demonstrating clinically unsuspected endocranial extension of the mass is described. The CT findings in 2 cases of aneurysmal bone cyst, including the significance of the presence of "fl

Foot drop, mimicking neuritic leprosy induced by a Baker's cyst.

A Baker's cyst of the left knee joint induced foot drop insidiously in a male, Hindu, aged 25 years. On clinical suspicion, that this malady was caused by neuritic type of leprosy, he was administered antileprosy drugs for 6 months without any benefit. On exploration a globular cystic mass, containing gelatinous fluid, was seen to be pressing over the left lateral popliteal nerve. Following removal of this mass, which on histology confirmed to be a Baker's cyst, foot drop and associated motor power impairment disappeared. This case thus highlights the importance of an early exploration and his

Ultrasonic evaluation of intracranial pathology in infants: a new technique.

A prospective study had demonstrated the clinical usefulness of water-delay ultrasound as a means of routinely imaging the intracranial contents in infants younger than one year of age. Correlation between ultrasound and CT images was excellent, showing both normal and pathological anatomy. This technique is most helpful in the detection of hydrocephalus and other "fluid lesions" (subdural hygroma or hematoma, Dandy-Walker cyst, porencephalic cyst) and in evaluation of response to therapy. Because small amounts of intraventricular and subependymal hemorrhage cannot be detected by ultrasound, C

[Studies into carcino-embryonic antigen (CEA) and enzyme activities of alkaline and acid phosphatase in patients with fibrocystic breast disease (author's transl)].

CEA as well as alkaline and acid phosphatase were measured in patients with fibrocystic breast disease. The values recorded from the punctured fluids were compared to those in peripheral blood. CEA concentrations in cyst fluid were elevated in patients with proliferative breast disease, whereas no correlations could be established between alkaline and acid phosphatase, on the one hand, and various histological forms of breast disease, on the other.

Behaviour of simple thymic cysts over time; is surveillance required?

AIM: Anterior mediastinal lesions can be a source of uncertainty on imaging, and thymic cysts present a unique diagnostic challenge. Differentiation of non-simple fluid-containing benign simple thymic cysts from small thymic neoplasms is challenging with computed tomography (CT) alone. Additionally, the malignant potential of simple thymic cysts is unclear and guidelines for imaging surveillance are not established. MATERIALS AND METHODS: All imaging studies containing the phrase "thymic cyst" were identified at our institution between October 2012 and October 2022. Studies were excluded if t

Diagnostic Dilemma of a Giant Paratubal Cyst in an Adolescent Female Mimicking a Mesenteric Cyst: A Case Report.

Paratubal cysts are rare adnexal masses that arise from the mesosalpinx and are typically small and asymptomatic. Giant paratubal cysts are a rare entity and a diagnostic challenge, especially in adolescents, due to nonspecific presentation and radiological similarity to other intra-abdominal cystic masses. A 15-year-old female presented with progressive abdominal distension and mild, nonspecific abdominal pain of three months' duration, associated with recent menstrual irregularities. Physical exam showed a distended, non-tender abdomen. Imaging studies, including computed tomography (CT) and

Effects of Suramin on Polycystic Kidney Disease in a Mouse Model of Polycystin-1 Deficiency.

The aberrant activation of the purinergic signaling pathway has been shown to promote cyst growth and fluid secretion in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Suramin is an anti-parasitic drug that has strong anti-purinergic properties. Whether suramin could have a therapeutic effect on ADPKD has not been fully investigated. We examined the effect of suramin on cyst progression in a Pkd1 microRNAs transgenic mouse model that presented stable Pkd1 knockdown and moderate disease progression. The Pkd1-deficient mice were treated with suramin (60 mg/kg) by intraperitoneal injection

The Fate of Lumbar Facet Cyst After Indirect Decompression Using Oblique Lateral Interbody Fusion in Degenerative Spondylolisthesis.

Favorable clinical outcomes have been reported for oblique lateral interbody fusion (OLIF) for various lumbar degenerative diseases. However, there is only limited evidence on the safety and effectiveness of OLIF in degenerative spondylolisthesis with lumbar facet cyst (LFC), and OLIF is often regarded as a relative contraindication for these patients. The authors prospectively enrolled patients who underwent a single-level OLIF for degenerative spondylolisthesis with LFC to evaluate the morphological changes of LFC and their clinical significance following OLIF. Twenty patients with a mean ag

Novel Use of Biodissolvable Stent in Treatment of Recurrent Rathke Cleft Cyst.

BACKGROUND: Rathke cleft cysts (RCCs) are benign cysts arising from the pars intermedia as a result of incomplete obliteration of the Rathke pouch during development of the pituitary gland. The most common presenting symptoms are headaches, visual disturbances, and endocrinopathies. Recurrence of RCCs after surgical treatment is a well-known phenomenon after surgery with reported recurrence rates as high as 30%. Various methods have been employed to reduce the rate of recurrence. Complete cyst wall resection has been associated with increased rates of perioperative cerebrospinal fluid leak, di
