Associations of Appetitive Traits and Parental Feeding Style With Diet Quality During Early Childhood.

BACKGROUND: Appetitive traits and parent feeding styles are associated with body mass index in children, yet their associations with child diet quality are unclear. OBJECTIVE: The objective was to examine relations of appetitive traits and parental feeding style with diet quality in 3.5-year-old children. DESIGN: The study was a secondary, cross-sectional analysis of data from Sprouts, a follow-up study of the Pregnancy Eating Attributes Study (PEAS). Birthing parents completed the Child Eating Behavior Questionnaire, Caregiver's Feeding Styles Questionnaire, and proxy 24-hour dietary recall

Micronutrient Inadequacy Differs by Intake of Fat Amount and Class Among Adults That Consume a Restricted Carbohydrate Diet: National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2007-2018.

BACKGROUND: Restricted carbohydrate diets remain among the most popular for weight loss and general health improvement. Recent evidence demonstrates that carbohydrate restricted diets are low in overall diet quality, yet their association with micronutrient inadequacy has not been well characterized at a population-level in adults in the United States. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the prevalence of not meeting daily micronutrient recommendations in US adults that met the Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Ranges and those who restricted carbohydrate intake to <45% energy, and to examine the effe

Diet Quality of Midwest Adolescents and Young Adults With Intellectual Disabilities and Overweight/Obesity Differs by Diagnosis but Not by Weight Category.

BACKGROUND: Poor diet may contribute to high rates of overweight/obesity (OW/OB) in adolescents and young adults with intellectual disabilities (IDs). OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine diet quality as assessed by Healthy Eating Index 2015 (HEI-2015) scores in adolescents and young adults with IDs and OW/OB and to compare diet quality by ID diagnosis and weight. DESIGN: Three-day image-assisted food records from baseline assessments in an 18-month weight-loss trial for adolescents and young adults with IDs and OW/OB were used to calculate HEI-2015 scores, which were compared

A Mixed-Methods Approach to the Development of a Disaster Food Security Framework.

BACKGROUND: Limited research on food systems and food insecurity (FI) following disasters finds contextual differences in post-disaster food systems that shape dimensions of FI. Measurement limitations make it difficult to address FI and develop effective practices for disaster-affected communities. OBJECTIVE: To develop, validate, and test a Disaster Food Security Framework (DFSF). DESIGN: Mixed-methods approach was used, including in-depth interviews to understand lived experiences during disasters; expert panel input to validate DFSF designed using responses from in-depth interviews; and

Feeding Stressors and Resources Used by Caregivers of Children With Down Syndrome: A Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Challenging eating behaviors or feeding difficulties, commonly displayed in children with Down syndrome (DS), may amplify perceived stress in caregivers. If caregivers lack resources on how to accommodate the needs of the child with DS, they may find feeding the child stressful and resort to negative coping strategies. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand the feeding stressors, resources, and coping strategies used by caregivers of children with DS. DESIGN: A qualitative analysis of interview transcripts was undertaken, framed around the Transactional Model of Stres

Health-Related Stigma and Challenges Faced by Men Living with Celiac Disease: A Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune condition managed by strict adherence to a gluten-free diet. Dietary choice has gendered connotations, and men with CD may face judgment from others when following a gluten-free diet. However, little is known about health-related stigma in men with CD. OBJECTIVES: The study aim was to explore the health-related stigma and challenges faced by men with CD, and the influence of CD on their lives. METHODS: Qualitative semistructured online interviews were conducted with men living with CD. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty adults (aged 18 years or older) iden
