Fourteen first-calf heifers were tested free of antibodies against Bovine viral diarrhea viruses (BVDV) by serum neutralization and free of BVDV by polymerase chain reaction. Twelve were exposed to BVDV-1b strain CA0401186a at 84-86 days of gestation, and 2 were exposed to mock inoculum and served as negative controls. Fetuses were harvested by cesarean section at 115-117 days of gestation. The 12 fetuses removed from the BVDV-exposed heifers were BVDV positive based on virus isolation from kidney, thymus, cerebellum, and spleen. It can be assumed that these fetuses would have developed into p

Reconstruction of the microtic ear represents one of the most demanding challenges in reconstructive surgery. In this review the two most commonly used techniques for ear reconstruction, the Brent and Nagata techniques, are addressed in detail. Unique to this endeavor, the originator of each technique has been allowed to submit representative case material and to address the pros and cons of the other's technique. What follows is a detailed, insightful overview of microtia reconstruction, as a state of the art. The review then details commonly encountered problems in ear reconstruction and per

OBJECTIVE: In search of ideal substance(s) for middle ear reconstruction, various materials were used and investigated in tympanoplasty.
METHOD: Up to may 1996, three kinds of materials were be used to reconstruct the ossicular chain: 1. Auto-ossicular residue reposition, 153 ears; 2. Homo-ossicle transplantation, 119 ears; 3. Homo-chondroseptum transplantation, 93 ears. We analysed and compared the middle and long-term results in these three groups.
RESULT: 1. In auto-ossicular residue reposition group, 86.3% was satisfied 10 years postoperation; 2. The satisfaction rate was 76.5% in homo-o

BACKGROUND: Hemophilic arthropathy can cause recurrent hemarthroses and severe damage to the synovium and articular cartilage. Previous studies have shown that vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) plays an essential role in neoangiogenesis. Bevacizumab, a monoclonal VEGF inhibitor, is used clinically to prevent angiogenesis. However, its effects on hemophilic arthropathy are unknown.
QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: Using a hemophilic arthropathy rabbit model, we asked: Does an intra-articular injection of bevacizumab (1) inhibit VEGF, (2) decrease signal intensity in dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI (D

BACKGROUND: Concha-type microtia with congenital aural stenosis carries a risk of external auditory canal cholesteatoma, which may cause infection and lead to the loss of costal cartilage grafts during auricular reconstruction. However, awareness of this risk among plastic surgeons remains limited. We aimed to review cases of cholesteatoma in concha-type microtia and discuss optimal management strategies.
METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective review of patients with concha-type or small concha-type microtia and congenital aural stenosis who underwent auricular reconstruction wit

INTRODUCTION: Perforations of the tympanic membrane result mainly from otitis media or trauma, and we need grafting when a perforation is chronically persistent to prevent recurring infections and to enhance hearing. In the present study, we assessed the success rate, feasibility, and efficacy of endoscopic transcanal tympanoplasty using tragal cartilage grafts via the clip technique.
METHODS: This prospective study was performed between September 2017 and December 2021 and was conducted in ENT departments in tertiary hospitals. Forty patients underwent endoscopic clip technique tragal cartil

INTRODUCTION: Cryptotia is characterized by an absence of the upper part of the temporoauricular sulcus with the superior third of the auricle buried under the temporal skin. The principle of correction of cryptotia is to achieve both a functional and aesthetic ear.
METHODOLOGY: A 4-year prospective study was carried out in a single centre on infants with cryptotia. We introduce a two-staged approach for non-surgical correction of cryptotia and a treatment algorithm based on the age of the patient. In the first stage, we unbury the auricle over 2 weeks. The second stage involves 2 additional

Neanderthals are among the best studied and yet most enigmatic fossil human groups with aspects of their anatomy and functional morphology remaining poorly understood. We present the first anatomical reconstruction of the Neanderthal cartilaginous Eustachian tube (CET), a vital component of the upper respiratory tract and nexus for the middle ear and postnasal airway. The Eustachian (auditory, pharyngotympanic) tube, comprised of a bony and cartilaginous (CET) portion, is integral to normal physiological functions such as middle ear aeration and pressure equilibration. Findings indicate that N

Severe auricular trauma is a rare injury. In addition to the type of injury, the location and the extent of the involved auricular structures have an important influence on the selection of an appropriate replantation or reattachment technique. A satisfactory primary reconstruction is not always possible to obtain and the remaining defects must be reconstructed secondary. The localization of the defect, its extent, and the condition of the tissue surrounding the defect are essential criteria for further treatment planning. This article provides an overview of the treatment of acute auricular t

A novel method for repair of septal perforations. Fifteen volunteers with symptomatic septal perforations were recruited. Open technique rhinoplasty approach was preferred: auricular conchal cartilage graft with intact perichondrium on both sides was harvested and shaped to fit the perforated site and attached to the septum with absorbable sutures. All margins of the graft were covered with nasal mucosa. The severity of patient symptoms was assessed at preoperation, 3 and 6 months postoperatively via visual analogue scale (VAS). Crust formation, whistling, nasal blockage, epistaxis and overall

Abnormal craniofacial features of a transgenic mouse model of chondrodysplasia with a type II collagen mutation (Gly574Ser) are described in this report. In addition to a shortened mandible and cleft palate, a misshapen otic capsule was observed. Interestingly, hearing impairment is often a component of the chondrodysplasia phenotype that results from mutations in COL2A1. To identify a potential mechanism in the hearing loss associated with type II collagen mutations, we examined the development of the otic capsule in the transgenic mice. It appeared to be smaller overall, relative to the skul

Although immune reactions to collagen have been described in several diseases, the pathophysiologic consequences of collagen autoimmunity remain obscure. We have recently described an animal model of polyarthritis which can be induced in susceptible rats or mice by immunization with native type II collagen. Arthritis develops in animals which have high levels of both cellular and humoral immunity to collagen. In rats, arthritis can be passively transferred with purified IgG antinative type II collagen antibodies. There is circumstantial evidence that antibodies are also important for the initi

The cartilage-conduction hearing aid (CC-HA) is a new hearing device that is suitable for use in patients with conductive hearing loss. It has been 5 years since the introduction of the CC-HA. Although the number of users has increased, the CC-HA is not yet widely known. This study examines the effects of CC-HA on patients with conductive hearing loss and investigates factors that affect the willingness to use the device by comparing purchasers and non-purchasers of CC-HA in patients with unilateral conductive hearing loss. Eight patients had bilateral conductive hearing loss, and 35 had unila

First branchial cleft fistulas are congenital malformations that result from the incomplete closure of the ectodermal portion of the first branchial cleft. These fistulas typically appear as small pits or subcutaneous masses in the upper neck and cheek and can cause pain due to infection and inflammation. Surgical excision is the most effective treatment, but special attention is necessary to avoid facial nerve injury due to the proximity of the lesion to the nerve and variations in their arrangement. Here, we report the successful treatment of a first branchial cleft fistula piercing through
