OBJECTIVE: To identify eye banking practices that influence corneal graft survival.
DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Prospective cohort study of records of 19,254 followed corneal grafts in 15160 patients, submitted to the Australian Corneal Graft Registry between May 1985 and July 2012.
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Influence of corneal preservation method (organ culture, moist pot, Optisol, other); death-to-enucleation, death-to-preservation and enucleation-to-graft times; transportation by air; graft era; and indication for graft on probability of graft survival at most recent follow-up.

Neonatal lesions of primary visual cortex (areas 17, 18 and 19; VC) in cats lead to significant changes in the organization of visual pathways, including severe retrograde degeneration of retinal ganglion cells of the X/beta class. We present histopathologic findings that have not been previously reported as associated with abnormalities of the anterior chamber angle underlying newborn primary congenital glaucoma as a distinct entity. The major histopathologic findings were partial absence and retrodisplacement of Schlemm's canal, hypoplasia of the trabecular meshwork, broad attachment of ciliary muscle to the meshwork, and anterior insertion of hypoplastic iris with the formation of a pseudomembrane. These profound anatomic derangements explain why goniosurgery is frequently unsuccessful in cases of newborn glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Incontinentia pigmenti (IP) can manifest with retinal detachment in children and can simulate retinoblastoma. The authors report a clinicopathologic correlation of IP and illustrate the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) alterations that may be useful in establishing the diagnosis.
METHODS: A 30-month-old reportedly healthy girl developed strabismus and was discovered to have total retinal detachment in the left eye. Intraocular calcification was found on ultrasonography and computed tomography, suggestive of retinoblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Lasiodiplodia theobromae is an exceptional cause of human keratomycosis.
PATIENT: We treated a 53-year-old man with fungal keratitis, which had been treated with topical betamethasone and gentamicin for 1 month, and endophthalmitis due to Lasiodiplodia theobromae. Despite intensive systemic, topical and intravitreal fungicidal treatment, enucleation had to be performed.
RESULTS: The vitreous aspirate cultures were negative as of the second amphotericin intravitreal injection. However, histology revealed that the fungus was present in the cornea, ciliary body, iris and retina.

PURPOSE: To demonstrate the clinical pathologic correlation in a hemorrhagic choroidal melanoma.
OBSERVATIONS: A 52 year old patient presented with a large choroidal mass associated with vitreous and retinal hemorrhage. The eye was enucleated and histopathology demonstrated epithelioid-type MART1 positive tumor cells consistent with choroidal melanoma. The tumor had broken through Bruch's membrane, which led to localized vascular compression with bleeding into the subretinal space, retina and vitreous.

A 3-year-old girl presented with a distorted pupil and decrease of visual acuity. A ciliary body mass at the superior-temporal quadrant could be seen at slit-lamp examination. Ultrasound biomicroscopy revealed a lesion with lobulated surface, arising at the ciliary body, composed of compact and cystic areas. An iridocyclectomy was performed but the tumour recurred after a few months. The eye was then enucleated. Histopathologic evaluation showed sheets and cords of proliferated medullary epithelium. In keratoconus, corneal stiffness is decreased. The purposes of this study were to search for techniques to stiffen the cornea and to determine a dose-response relation. The stiffness of collagenous tissues can be increased by cross-linking. A 50-year-old diabetic man developed necrotizing scleritis with adjacent keratitis 4 weeks after uncomplicated cataract extraction and intraocular lens implantation through a scleral tunnel incision. Cultures of the necrotic sclera grew Rizopus species. Severe destruction of the globe ensued despite topical, subconjunctival, and intravenous amphotericin B, in combination with hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Histopathological examination of the enucleated globe was consistent with Rhizopus infection. One year later, the patient was well without signs of recurrence.
