The effect of different pre-operative feeding regimens on plasma glucose and gastric volume and pH in infancy.

The effects of four different pre-operative feeding regimens were studied in 123 children below the age of one year presenting for surgery. Plasma glucose concentrations, blood acid-base values, gastric volume and gastric pH were measured before and after induction of anaesthesia. No patient was found to be hypoglycaemic and there were no significant differences in plasma glucose concentration and acid-base values between the groups. No correlation was demonstrated between the age and weight of the patients and the duration of fasting and the plasma glucose concentration. There was a significa

Metabolic and behavioral effects of chronic olanzapine treatment and cafeteria diet in rats.

Olanzapine and highly palatable diets can alter metabolism and brain function. We investigated the interaction of chronic treatment (4 months) with olanzapine and a cafeteria diet on metabolic parameters, memory tasks (spatial and aversive), the elevated plus maze and locomotor activity induced by d-amphetamine. Male Wistar rats were separated into the following groups: standard diet vehicle, standard diet and olanzapine, cafeteria diet vehicle and cafeteria diet and olanzapine. Olanzapine was administered in the drinking water (approximately 1.5 mg/kg/day), and after 3 days of treatment, the

Food For Thought: An Unusual Case of Scurvy with Hemarthrosis and Musculoskeletal Symptoms.

Scurvy (vitamin C deficiency) can present with a wide range of musculoskeletal manifestations that mimic rheumatologic disease. A 53-year-old man was admitted with progressive muscle weakness and dizziness and was noted to have a non-blanching rash and joint swelling. Initial evaluation raised concern for inflammatory arthritis, inflammatory myopathy, or vasculitis. Although the C-reactive protein level was elevated, an extensive rheumatologic serologic workup was unrevealing. Arthrocentesis of the knee demonstrated hemarthrosis. Further dietary history revealed severe nutritional deficiency,

Body position adjustment may facilitate capsule endoscopic real-time examination in patients with a large amount of food retention in the stomach.

A patient with acute obscure gastrointestinal bleeding was found to have a large amount of food retention in the stomach after fasting for >12 hours. We tried to adjust the patient's body position to facilitate capsule endoscopic examination. The patient laid on the bed on his right side, which is the position required for a normal procedure, and then his hip was raised while his upper body was lowered gradually until the pylorus appeared at the center of the screen of the real-time monitor. It took 15 minutes of body position adjustment to make the pylorus appear at the center of the monitor

Hepatocyte circadian clock controls acetaminophen bioactivation through NADPH-cytochrome P450 oxidoreductase.

The diurnal variation in acetaminophen (APAP) hepatotoxicity (chronotoxicity) reportedly is driven by oscillations in metabolism that are influenced by the circadian phases of feeding and fasting. To determine the relative contributions of the central clock and the hepatocyte circadian clock in modulating the chronotoxicity of APAP, we used a conditional null allele of brain and muscle Arnt-like 1 (Bmal1, aka Mop3 or Arntl) allowing deletion of the clock from hepatocytes while keeping the central and other peripheral clocks (e.g., the clocks controlling food intake) intact. We show that deleti

Cyanoacrylate medical adhesives--a new era Colgate ORABASE Soothe.N.Seal Liquid Protectant for canker sore relief.

Cyanoacrylate, a synthetic adhesive, is a fast polymerizable liquid monomer. Serendipity led to the discovery of cyanoacrylate adhesives in 1951. Today, a specific cyanoacrylate monomer, 2-octyl cyanoacrylate, is being used in a topical medical adhesive formulation. The only over-the-counter cyanoacrylate-based product cleared by the Food and Drug Administration is Colgate ORABASE Soothe.N. Seal Liquid Protectant. Upon application, this liquid monomer formulation polymerizes instantly into a thin, flexible polymer film that adheres tenaciously to mucosal tissue. This polymer film creates a mec

Adipose tissue protein kinase D: regulation of signaling networks and its sex-dependent effects on metabolism.

The protein kinase D (PKD) family of three highly homologous isoforms (PKD1, PKD2, and PKD3) is implicated as nutrient sensing signaling kinases that regulate the response of adipose and other tissues to the nutrient environment. However, the physiological role of adipose tissue PKD and its downstream cellular signaling targets are not well characterized. Here, we used phosphoproteomics that was performed to elucidate signaling events downstream of PKD activation in differentiated 3T3-L1 adipocytes using a triple isoform siRNA knockdown model. This revealed PKD-regulated pathways including ins

Serotonin 5-HT2C receptor-mediated inhibition of the M-current in hypothalamic POMC neurons.

Hypothalamic proopiomelanocortin (POMC) neurons are controlled by many central signals, including serotonin. Serotonin increases POMC activity and reduces feeding behavior via serotonion [5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)] receptors by modulating K(+) currents. A potential K(+) current is the M-current, a noninactivating, subthreshold outward K(+) current. Previously, we found that M-current activity was highly reduced in fasted vs. fed states in neuropeptide Y neurons. Because POMC neurons also respond to energy states, we hypothesized that fasting may alter the M-current and/or its modulation by se

Wider impacts of a 10-week community cooking skills program--Jamie's Ministry of Food, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Jamie's Ministry of Food (JMoF) Australia is a 10-week community-based cooking skills program which is primarily aimed at increasing cooking skills and confidence and the promotion of eating a more nutritious diet. However, it is likely that the program influences many pathways to behaviour change. This paper explores whether JMoF impacted on known precursors to healthy cooking and eating (such as attitudes, knowledge, beliefs, cooking enjoyment and satisfaction and food purchasing behaviour) and whether there are additional social and health benefits which arise from program parti

The Carbothalamus: Villain and Victim in Metabolic Care.

The hypothalamus, through its expression and interaction with various neurotransmitters, pituitary hormones and orexigenic and anorexigenic signals, regulates appetite. Leptin and insulin, released in response to food intake, act as anorexigenic stimuli whereas ghrelin, released in fasting, is orexigenic. Imbalance in these signals can lead to disorders in appetite regulation with cardiovascular implications. Glucose, through multiple mechanisms, shows an addictive potential and interacts and affects the hypothalamic regulation of appetite and energy metabolism. The concept of Carbothalamus in
