The Rorschach and traumatic loss: can the presence of traumatic loss be detected from the Rorschach?

Loss, an expected part of everyone's life, can be a catalyst promoting significant growth. But all losses are not the same or affect everyone in like manner. Some losses are of such magnitude and intensity that individuals cannot cope, and, therefore, they keep reliving them (posttraumatic stress syndrome) as if through repeated attempts (Freud, 1923-1922/1961) they might master what had been initially so overwhelming. This study, using an inpatient hospital sample, examines the Rorschach protocols of individuals who had experienced traumatic loss in childhood or early adolescence and compares

The psychodynamic life narrative: a psychotherapeutic intervention useful in crisis situations.

The Psychodynamic Life Narrative is a psychotherapeutic maneuver used during the first few sessions of a consultation with a patient in a crisis situation. By establishing a powerful bond between physician and patient, it offers the possibility of a rapid relief of dysphoric symptoms. In some situations, it may be useful in mobilizing a recalcitrant patient to accept psychotherapy or, in the case of the physically ill, to accept diagnostic procedures and treatments previously refused. It is most effective in patients whose general adaptation has been stable and whose psychological homeostasis

Mental health conditions in bereaved military service widows: A prospective, case-controlled, and longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Bereavement is associated with increases in prevalence of mental health conditions and in healthcare utilization. Due to younger age and bereavement by sudden and violent deaths, military widows may be vulnerable to poor outcomes. No systematic research has examined these effects. METHOD: Using outpatient medical records from wives of active-duty military service members (SMs), we compared the prevalence of mental health conditions and mental healthcare visits among case widows (n = 1,375) to matched (on age, baseline healthcare utilization, SM deployment, and rank) non

The impact of molar pregnancy on psychological symptomatology, sexual function, and quality of life.

BACKGROUND: Molar pregnancy is an unusual complication of pregnancy whereby abnormal placental tissue proliferates in the absence of a fetus. There is usually a protracted follow-up period where pregnancy is contra-indicated. Whilst the medical outcomes of the disease have been well explored, limited data have evaluated the impact on psychological symptomatology, sexual function, and quality of life. METHODS: Institutional ethics approval and individual consent were obtained. All women listed on the hospital molar pregnancy register receiving active follow-up (n = 102) and a random sample of

Grey glasses: sadness in young women.

Sadness as a developmental phenomenon in young women was discovered in a study designed to identify developmental transitions and the relationship of these transitions to mental health. Sadness is conceptualized as a pervasive feeling of disillusionment and unhappiness that influences the meaning of life events and decision-making. Field research and interpretive analysis techniques were used to observe, describe and analyse the life experiences of 25 volunteer participants. For most women in the study, sadness was found to be time-limited and perhaps had beneficial effects. Some women, howeve

Life events prior to manifestation of breast cancer: a limited prospective study covering eight years before diagnosis.

The role of life events in breast cancer was conceptualized within two models differing by vulnerability factors, 'social support' and 'early loss of mother'. The eight years prior to manifestation of the lump were covered by semi-structured interviews. Event ratings were performed according to Brown and Harris' Life Events and Difficulties Scale, an interviewer-based rating method. Data were collected within a so-called limited prospective design. This setting was subject to critical evaluation to control possible artifacts. Interviews were tape-recorded and rated before learning the final di

Psychosocial transitions: an emotional health comparison.

Utilizing the standardized Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90), emotional health scores of those experiencing psychosocial transitions were compared. Parents whose child died approximately 60 months earlier (N = 62) were compared to new immigrants living in absorption centers who arrived approximately 8 months earlier (N = 122). Even 5 years after the event, the emotional health of bereaved parents appeared to be lower than the new immigrant group. The differences appeared more pronounced for females and for the 45 + year old groupings (male and female). Depression seemed to be contrary. In most in

Stress-response syndromes: a review of posttraumatic and adjustment disorders.

The signs and symptoms of response to a stressful life event are expressed in two predominant phases: the intrusive state, characterized by unbidden ideas and feelings and even compulsive actions, and the denial state, characterized by emotional numbing and constriction of ideation. In this review of stress-response syndromes, the author outlines those phases, discusses the DSM-III diagnoses for stress-response disorders, and considers the mutual etiologic effects of stressful life events, psychiatric disorders, and preexisting conflicts or functional deficits. Guidelines for brief dynamic psy

Partnership problems as causes of endogenous and neurotic depressions.

Content analysis of biographic interviews with endogenous and neurotic depressives shows that problems in a partnership carry particular weight as triggers of depression. In this respect, however, separations and the death of a partner play a comparatively less important role. Neurotic depressives become significantly more often depressive because of partnership-related events than endogenous depressives. Also in qualitative respects the causes for depression differ between the two groups: in endogenous depressives a threat of real loss often triggers depression, whereas neurotic depressives f

German-language adaptation of the Bereavement Risk Assessment Tool (BRAT): findings on the inter-rater reliability.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged Grief Disorder (PGD) affects approximately 10% of the bereaved adults, with prevalence rates in Germany ranging between 4.7–5.4%. Early identification through pre-death risk assessment is crucial for optimal bereavement care, yet no validated German-language instrument exists. The Bereavement Risk Assessment Tool (BRAT) represents a promising solution but requires cultural adaptation and validation. The aim of this study was to adapt the BRAT for German-speaking countries and evaluate its inter-rater reliability among healthcare professionals in palliative care and hospic…
