Underlying Factors Influencing Kidney Cancer Surgical Treatment Disparities: Patients', Non-Patient Community Members', and Urologists' Perspectives.

Kidney cancer (KCa) patients from racial and ethnic minority groups often delay or forgo surgical treatment and have invasive treatment. The goal of this pilot study was to understand the factors underlying KCa treatment disparities. We interviewed KCa patients (n=13) and community members without KCa (n=61) in Arizona and conducted online surveys with urologists (n=54). Many interview participants were from minority groups (82%) and had health care access difficulties. Four out of 10 patients waited over a year to see their doctor when they had potential symptoms before diagnosis. Almost 30%

Barriers and facilitators influencing the use of HIV self-testing amongst adolescent girls and young women in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Despite global strides in HIV testing strategies in recent years, such as home testing and non-medical testing sites, HIV testing uptake and access to treatment, care, and support remain at very low access levels amongst key and priority populations, such as adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). The study assessed the barriers and facilitators influencing the use of HIV self-testing (HIVST) among AGYW in Sekhukhune Technical Vocational Education and Training college, South Africa. METHODS: An institution-based descriptive exploratory qualitative study was employed in which 22

Is Cognitive Care the Next Blind Spot in HIV Clinical Practice? Exploring the Facilitators and Barriers to Integrating Cognitive Care into Routine HIV Care in Malaysia: A Mixed Method Study.

In the antiretroviral therapy era, as people living with HIV (PWH) age, the decline of HIV-associated dementia has been accompanied by a growing burden of earlier Alzheimer-type pathology and other milder, heterogeneous cognitive impairments, underscoring the need for proactive detection and multidisciplinary management within routine HIV care. Yet, cognitive care remains largely absent, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC). We evaluated readiness to integrate a multidomain cognitive-rehabilitation program into tertiary HIV clinic in Malaysia and identified implementation de

Rumors and fears about the HPV vaccine: Perceptions of adolescent girls in government school in Addis Ababa.

Cervical cancer remains a significant global public health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, like Ethiopia. The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination is the most effective tool to prevent HPV transmission and reduce cervical cancer-related mortality, but the vaccine uptake remains suboptimal. The public perception of the HPV vaccine is marked by fear and doubt. Although girls are the primary targets of HPV vaccination, little is known about their perspectives, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). This study addressed the research question: How do ado

Awareness, experiences and perceptions regarding genetic testing and the return of genetic and genomics results in a hypothetical research context among patients in Uganda: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Genetic testing presents unique ethical challenges for research and clinical practice, particularly in low-resource settings. To address such challenges, context-specific understanding of ethical, legal and social issues is essential. Return of genetics and genomics research (GGR) results remains an unresolved yet topical issue particularly in African settings that lack appropriate regulation and guidelines. Despite the need to understand what is contextually acceptable, there is a paucity of empirical research and literature on what constitutes appropriate practice with respect to

Barriers and enablers to salt intake reduction in Australian adults with high blood pressure.

High dietary salt intake is a known risk factor for hypertension. However, Australians continue to consume excessive amounts of salt. The purpose of this study was to identify barriers, enablers and strategies to reduce salt in a sample of Australian adults with hypertension. This was a qualitative study. Participants were asked a set of open-ended questions during focus groups conducted between October 2020 and April 2021. Sessions were recorded and transcribed. Using an inductive approach, the transcript data from the focus groups were thematically analysed. This involved checking accuracy,

Perceptions of mothers with gestational diabetes and their healthcare workers on postpartum physical activity to attenuate progression of gestational diabetes to diabetes mellitus: A qualitative study.

Background Mothers with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) have a high risk of progressing to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in the future. This progression can be attenuated by appropriate lifestyle interventions. We aimed to understand the perceptions of mothers with GDM and their healthcare workers regarding postpartum physical activity with a view to design a lifestyle intervention programme. Methods We did this qualitative study in three selected districts of Sri Lanka. We also conducted six focus group discussions with 30 antenatal mothers with a history of GDM in a previo

Tending the 'monthly flower:' a qualitative study of menstrual beliefs in Tigray, Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Menstruation is a universal aspect of human female reproductive life. Management of menstrual flow presents hygiene challenges to girls and women in low-income countries, especially when they first start their periods. As part of a project to improve menstrual hygiene management in the Tigray Region of Ethiopia, we explored the local understanding of menstruation through focus-group discussions and individual interviews. METHODS: A detailed ethnographic survey of menstrual beliefs was carried out through 40 focus group discussions, 64 in-depth key informant interviews, and 16 indi

A randomized controlled trial of a supportive expressive group intervention for women with a family history of breast cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Women with a family history of breast cancer (BC) often overestimate their BC risk. Heightened psychological distress may interfere with risk comprehension and screening adherence. The primary purpose of this study was to test the efficacy of a 12-week manual-based supportive-expressive (SE) group intervention for this population. METHODS: Using a randomized control trial design, this study compared two interventions: a standard risk-counseling arm (RC) compared with that plus SE group intervention. The primary study outcome was BC anxiety. Secondary outcomes included psychosocial

Provider perceptions on the management of lupus during pregnancy: barriers to improved care.

BACKGROUND: More than half of pregnancies in women with systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) result in adverse outcomes for the mother or the fetus. We sought to identify aspects of current rheumatologic care that could be improved to decrease the frequency of poor outcomes. METHODS: Focus groups with clinical rheumatologists, based on the PRECEDE/PROCEED framework, identified factors that influenced care. A group of women with lupus on their reproductive journey contributed to our understanding of the dilemmas and care provided. RESULTS: Medically ill-timed pregnancies and medication non-ad
