Visually mediated functioning improves following treatment of hoarding disorder.

BACKGROUND: Hoarding disorder (HD) is a highly debilitating psychiatric disorder that affects 2-6% of adults. Neuropsychological deficits in visual memory, detection, and categorization have been reported in HD. To date, no study has examined the relationship between neurocognitive functioning and treatment for HD. We aim to determine the association between neurocognitive functioning and treatment outcomes, as well as the impact of HD-specific treatment on cognitive functioning. METHODS: 323 individuals with HD were randomized to 20 weeks of peer- or clinician-led group behavioral treatment.

Human-Centered Design Lessons for Implementation Science: Improving the Implementation of a Patient-Centered Care Intervention.

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based HIV interventions often fail to reach anticipated impact due to insufficient utilization in real-world health systems. Human-centered design (HCD) represents a novel approach in tailoring innovations to fit end-users, narrowing the gap between efficacious interventions and impact at scale. METHODS: We combined a narrative literature review of HCD in HIV programs with our experience using HCD to redesign an intervention promoting patient-centered care (PCC) practices among health care workers (HCW) in Zambia. We summarize the use and results of HCD in the global HIV

Web-based cognitive-behavioral intervention for pain in pediatric acute recurrent and chronic pancreatitis: Protocol of a multicenter randomized controlled trial from the study of chronic pancreatitis, diabetes and pancreatic cancer (CPDPC).

INTRODUCTION: Abdominal pain is common and is associated with high disease burden and health care costs in pediatric acute recurrent and chronic pancreatitis (ARP/CP). Despite the strong central component of pain in ARP/CP and the efficacy of psychological therapies for other centralized pain syndromes, no studies have evaluated psychological pain interventions in children with ARP/CP. The current trial seeks to 1) evaluate the efficacy of a psychological pain intervention for pediatric ARP/CP, and 2) examine baseline patient-specific genetic, clinical, and psychosocial characteristics that ma

A Rapid Response Electrochemical Biosensor for Detecting Thc In Saliva.

Marijuana is listed as a Schedule I substance under the American Controlled Substances Act of 1970. As more U.S. states and countries beyond the U.S. seek legalization, demands grow for identifying individuals driving under the influence (DUI) of marijuana. Currently no roadside DUI test exists for determining marijuana impairment, thus the merit lies in detecting the primary and the most sought psychoactive compound tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in marijuana. Salivary THC levels are correlated to blood THC levels making it a non-invasive medium for rapid THC testing. Affinity biosensing is lever

Physical and Sexual Violence Affecting Female Sex Workers in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire: Prevalence, and the Relationship with the Work Environment, HIV, and Access to Health Services.

BACKGROUND: Violence is a human rights violation, and an important measure in understanding HIV among female sex workers (FSW). However, limited data exist regarding correlates of violence among FSW in Côte d'Ivoire. Characterizing prevalence and determinants of violence and the relationship with structural risks for HIV can inform development and implementation of comprehensive HIV prevention and treatment programs. METHODS: FSW > 18 years were recruited through respondent driven sampling (RDS) in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire. In total, 466 participants completed a socio-behavioral questionnaire a

Attitudes Towards Gambling, Gambling Problems, and Treatment Among Hispanics in Imperial County, CA.

Gambling problems are associated with a wide range of serious negative personal, social, health, and mental health consequences and are an important public health concern. Some data suggest that gambling problems may be more prevalent among Hispanics, but few studies have been conducted in this community. The aim of the current study was to gather community-based, gambling-related data in order to increase understanding of gambling problems and their treatment in the Hispanic community. We conducted a mixed-methods study of gambling behavior and attitudes towards gambling, those with gambling

The 1% rule in four digital health social networks: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, cyberculture has informally reported a phenomenon named the 1% rule, or 90-9-1 principle, which seeks to explain participatory patterns and network effects within Internet communities. The rule states that 90% of actors observe and do not participate, 9% contribute sparingly, and 1% of actors create the vast majority of new content. This 90%, 9%, and 1% are also known as Lurkers, Contributors, and Superusers, respectively. To date, very little empirical research has been conducted to verify the 1% rule. OBJECTIVE: The 1% rule is widely accepted in digital marketin

Characterizing sleep, headache-related disability, and psychological functioning among adolescents with continuous headache: A pilot study from a tertiary clinical setting.

OBJECTIVES/BACKGROUND: Youth with continuous headache are understudied, are presumed to be more psychosocially complex and impaired than youth with remitting headache presentations, and are at risk for poor clinical outcomes. Given links between sleep and pain, characterizing sleep among youth with continuous headache may inform intervention targets. This study was undertaken to describe the sleep characteristics of a sample of treatment-seeking adolescents with continuous headache and contextualize these data by comparing the sleep-wake behavior of youth with continuous headache to youth with

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis-Related Messages Across Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter (Rebranded X): Content Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Interventions are needed to address the lack of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) awareness and mitigate barriers related to PrEP use. One such intervention modality is social media, as PrEP awareness and communication on issues, such as access and cost, are easily addressed via clear social media messages on platforms for PrEP-eligible people, and especially young people, who use social media more frequently. OBJECTIVE: This descriptive study seeks to extend understanding of PrEP awareness and usage by examining PrEP-related communication across 3 popular social media platforms (Fa

Understanding antibiotic purchasing practices in community pharmacies: A potential driver of emerging antimicrobial resistance.

INTRODUCTION: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), a transboundary health issue, critically impacting low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where 80% of antibiotics are used in the community, with 20-50% being inappropriate. Southeast-Asia, including Bangladesh, faces heightened AMR risk due to suboptimal healthcare standard and unregulated antibiotic sales. This study aimed to audit antibiotic dispensing patterns from community pharmacies, identifying factors influencing purchasing behaviors. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 385 antibiotic customers and structured observations of 1000 phar

Increased biting rate and decreased Wolbachia density in irradiated Aedes mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Releasing considerable numbers of radiation-sterilized males is a promising strategy to suppress mosquito vectors. However, releases may also include small percentages of biting females, which translate to non-negligible numbers when releases are large. Currently, the effects of irradiation on host-seeking and host-biting behaviors have not been exhaustively investigated. Information is also lacking regarding the effects of sterilizing treatment on the endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia, which is known to affect the vector competence of infected mosquitos. METHODS: To ascertain the

Cost Analysis of Motivational Interviewing and Preschool Education for Secondhand Smoke Exposures.

INTRODUCTION: This study determines if expenditures associated with implementing a combined motivational interviewing (MI) and Head Start-level education program (MI+Education), as compared to education alone, yield cost savings to society. METHODS: Post hoc cost analyses were applied to a randomized controlled-trial of MI among predominantly African American, low-income caregivers of 330 Baltimore City Head Start students who reside with a smoker. The primary outcome was the cost savings of MI+Education from averted direct secondhand smoke exposure (SHSe)-related acute healthcare events and

Vaccine effectiveness against SARS-CoV-2 reinfection during periods of Alpha, Delta, or Omicron dominance: A Danish nationwide study.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with a prior Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection have a moderate to high degree of protection against reinfection, though seemingly less so when the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2 started to circulate. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vaccine effectiveness (VE) against SARS-CoV-2 reinfection, Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)-related hospitalization, and COVID-19-related death, in individuals with prior SARS-CoV-2 infection, and to assess the effect of time since vaccination during periods with different dominant SARS-CoV-2 v

Athletic identity and depressive symptom risk in college students: a machine learning approach to identify at-risk profiles and protective correlates.

The relationship between athletic participation and depressive symptom risk among college students remains complex and contested, with prior research yielding inconsistent findings regarding whether sports involvement serves as a protective correlate or a correlate of psychological vulnerability. Using cross-sectional survey data from 795 undergraduate students at a large public university in the northeastern United States, this study employed machine learning methods to examine how athletic identity profiles, sports participation patterns, and related psychosocial correlates were associated w

Integrated Care for Serious Mental Illness, Physical Health Needs, and Social Services.

As health care transitions from fee-for-service (FFS) to value-based care (VBC), models that effectively integrate mental and physical health are essential, particularly considering the unsustainable rise of health care expenditures and less-than-desired outcomes of FFS. Mental health represents a significant and growing component of health care. Mental Health Cooperative (MHC), a Tennessee-based integrated health care system, has implemented a patient-centric integrated care model that addresses both behavioral and physical health needs for patients with behavioral health severe mental illnes

Substance use disorder treatment carve outs in Medicaid managed care.

INTRODUCTION: Medicaid managed care organizations (MCO) play a major role in addressing the nation's epidemic of drug overdose and mortality by administering substance use disorder (SUD) treatment benefits for over 50 million Americans. While it is known that some Medicaid MCO plans delegate responsibility for managing SUD treatment benefits to an outside "carve out" entity, the extent and structure of such carve out arrangements are unknown. This is an important gap in knowledge, given that carve outs have been linked to reductions in rates of SUD treatment receipt in several studies. To addr

Comparing Factors Associated with Increased Stimulant Use in Relation to HIV Status Using a Machine Learning and Prediction Modeling Approach.

Stimulant use is an important driver of HIV/STI transmission among men who have sex with men (MSM). Evaluating factors associated with increased stimulant use is critical to inform HIV prevention programming efforts. This study seeks to use machine learning variable selection techniques to determine characteristics associated with increased stimulant use and whether these factors differ by HIV status. Data from a longitudinal cohort of predominantly Black/Latinx MSM in Los Angeles, CA was used. Every 6 months from 8/2014-12/2020, participants underwent STI testing and completed surveys evaluat
