Traffic-related air toxics and preterm birth: a population-based case-control study in Los Angeles County, California.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have associated air pollutant exposures with adverse birth outcomes, but there is still relatively little information to attribute effects to specific emission sources or air toxics. We used three exposure data sources to examine risks of preterm birth in Los Angeles women when exposed to high levels of traffic-related air pollutants--including specific toxics--during pregnancy. METHODS: We identified births during 6/1/04-3/31/06 to women residing within five miles of a Southern California Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) Multiple Air Toxics Exposure Study

Immediate information expected by the neonatologist from the placenta.

As the obstetrician attends to the mother and the pediatrician to the child, the placenta often tends to be ignored. Nevertheless, essential anamnestic information about the condition of a newborn infant, and especially of a premature, can be gained from careful scrutiny of the placenta and fetal membranes. This paper emphasizes the importance of gross examination of the placenta and membranes as a source of immediate information to the pediatrician within the delivery room.

Recruiting children and young people with vision impairment for clinical research - experience from the SeeMyLife study.

BACKGROUND: Effective participant recruitment is crucial for the success of clinical trials, yet little is known about facilitators and barriers to recruitment in pediatric populations with visual impairment. Understanding which methods yield the highest participant engagement can help optimize recruitment efforts and improve study outcomes. Thus, we assessed factors associated with recruitment in the SeeMyLife study, a European multi-center cohort study about quality of life and participation of children and young people with visual impairment. METHODS: Data on the perceived effectiveness of

Perceptions about oral isotretinoin treatment.

There are some studies on the knowledge, beliefs, and perceptions of patients about acne vulgaris, however, there is no sufficient data on patients' beliefs about oral isotretinoin treatment (OIT). The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge, beliefs, and perceptions of the patients with acne vulgaris about the therapy of OIT and its side effects. A total of 214 patients with acne vulgaris in our outpatient clinic were included. Patients who were planned to treat with OIT were asked whether they had information about the treatment and its side effects. It was noted whether the patients a

Prevalence and Sources of E-Cigarette Use: Findings From a Rapid-Response Survey in High-Tobacco-Burden U.S. States, 2023-2024.

INTRODUCTION: The overall effectiveness of E-cigarette regulations may be undermined by access to unregulated sources for obtaining E-cigarettes. Data on sources of E-cigarettes are limited, particularly in places with the highest tobacco burden in the U.S. METHODS: Data were from a rapid-response survey of a probability sample of 9,100 adults (aged 18-65 years) in 13 high-tobacco-burden U.S. states collected in April-May 2023 and April-May 2024. Weighted bivariate analyses and multinomial logistic regression were used to examine E-cigarette prevalence and correlates of E-cigarette sources.

Extracellular Vesicles from Different Mesenchymal Stem Cell Types Exhibit Distinctive Surface Protein Profiling and Molecular Characteristics: A Comparative Analysis.

The current medical need to respond to different diseases has sparked great interest in extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) due to their great regenerative potential and as drug carriers by playing a critical role in cell-cell communication. However, due to their heterogeneity, there is no standardized universal method for their identification and characterization, which limits their clinical application. This study, following the recommendations and methodologies proposed by MISEV2023 for the characterization of EVs, shows for the first time a detailed morp

Sire: An interoperability engine for prototyping algorithms and exchanging information between molecular simulation programs.

Sire is a Python/C++ library that is used both to prototype new algorithms and as an interoperability engine for exchanging information between molecular simulation programs. It provides a collection of file parsers and information converters that together make it easier to combine and leverage the functionality of many other programs and libraries. This empowers researchers to use sire to write a single script that can, for example, load a molecule from a PDBx/mmCIF file via Gemmi, perform SMARTS searches via RDKit, parameterize molecules using BioSimSpace, run GPU-accelerated molecular dynam

How the depth of processing modulates emotional interference - evidence from EEG and pupil diameter data.

The ability to process emotionally conflicting information is an important requirement for emotional self-control. While it seems obvious that the impact of interfering emotional information critically depends on how deeply this interfering information is processed, it is still unknown what cognitive subprocesses are most affected by manipulating the depth of processing of emotionally interfering information. We examine these aspects integrating neurophysiological (EEG) and source localization data with pupil diameter data as an indirect index of the norepinephrine (NE) system activity. We sho

Risk information exposure and direct-to-consumer genetic testing for BRCA mutations among women with a personal or family history of breast or ovarian cancer.

BACKGROUND: Direct-to-consumer (DTC) BRCA testing may expand access to genetic testing and enhance cancer prevention efforts. It is not known, however, if current DTC websites provide adequate risk information for informed medical decision making. METHODS: A total of 284 women with a personal or family history of breast/ovarian cancer were randomly assigned to view a "mock" DTC commercial website [control condition (CC); n = 93] or the same "mock" website that included information on the potential risks of obtaining genetic testing online. Risk information was framed two ways: risk informatio

Health information delivery to patients at risk of having a small for gestational age/growth restricted baby in Aotearoa New Zealand: what can we learn from lived experience?

INTRODUCTION: The importance of access to reliable information during pregnancy is heightened in pregnancy complications. Impaired fetal growth (including small for gestational age (SGA) and growth restricted (FGR) fetuses) affects up to 10% of pregnancies and is associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. However, there is a paucity of accessible, evidence-based, information to support parents told their baby is not growing as expected. This study sought to explore patient experiences of information provision and seeking during pregnancies at risk of impaired fetal growth. MET

Application of a microbial and pathogen source tracking toolbox to identify infrastructure problems in stormwater drainage networks: a case study.

Water scarcity and increasing urbanization are forcing municipalities to consider alternative water sources, such as stormwater, to fill in water supply gaps or address hydromodification of receiving urban streams. Mounting evidence suggests that stormwater is often contaminated with human feces, even in stormwater drainage systems separate from sanitary sewers. Pinpointing sources of human contamination in drainage networks is challenging given the diverse sources of fecal pollution that can impact these systems and the non-specificity of traditional fecal indicator bacteria (FIB) for identif
