Effects of inclusion level of black soldier fly larvae protein or oil on broiler growth performance during heat stress.

Beyond their nutritional value, insects contain bioactive compounds, including chitin, lauric acid, and antimicrobial peptides, and could potentially exert positive effects on animals consuming insect-based diets in health challenging conditions. A total of 648 Ross 308 male chicks were fed four different soybean meal-maize-wheat based diets in which soybean meal or oil was partly replaced by black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) protein or oil, respectively, in cyclic heat stress or thermoneutral (control) conditions. BSFL protein or oil was included at 5 and 10 %, and 2 and 4 %, respectively, in a

Cross-Resistance between Cry1 Proteins in Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) May Affect the Durability of Current Pyramided Bt Maize Hybrids in Brazil.

Genetically modified plants expressing insecticidal proteins from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) offer valuable options for managing insect pests with considerable environmental and economic benefits. Despite the benefits provided by Bt crops, the continuous expression of these insecticidal proteins imposes strong selection for resistance in target pest populations. Bt maize (Zea mays) hybrids have been successful in controlling fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda), the main maize pest in Brazil since 2008; however, field-evolved resistance to the protein Cry1F has recently been reported. Theref

Genetic variability among native and introduced strains of the parasitic nematode Deladenus siricidicola.

Sirex noctilio is an invasive Eurasian woodwasp that can kill pine (Pinus spp.) trees and has been introduced to areas of the Southern Hemisphere where plantations of introduced pines are grown. The main method of control of this invasive pest has been introduction and augmentation of a parasitic nematode, Deladenus siricidicola. The strain of D. siricidicola used for biological control of S. noctilio in the Southern Hemisphere originated in Sopron, Hungary. The genotype of D. siricidicola used for biological control sterilizes females of the strain of S. noctilio present in Australia. However

Control of the sheep blowfly in Australia and New Zealand--are we there yet?

The last 50 years of research into infections in Australia and New Zealand caused by larvae of the sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, have significantly advanced our understanding of this blowfly and its primary host, the sheep. However, apart from some highly effective drugs it could be argued that no new control methodologies have resulted. This review addresses the major areas of sheep blowfly research over this period describing the significant outcomes and analyses, and what is still required to produce new commercial control technologies. The use of drugs against this fly species has been v

Real-time quantitative PCR for analysis of candidate fungal biopesticides against malaria: technique validation and first applications.

Recent research has indicated that fungal biopesticides could augment existing malaria vector control tools. Here we present a set of methodologies to monitor the in vivo kinetics of entomopathogenic fungi in Anopheles in the presence or absence of malaria parasites using quantitative real-time PCR. Three qPCR assays were successfully developed for counting fungal genomes: "specific" assays capable of distinguishing two well characterized fungal entomopathogens Beauveria bassiana isolate IMI391510 and Metarhizium anisopliae var. acridum isolate IMI330189, both of which have previously been sho

Biological performance of quercetin on the cotton leaf-worm larvae, Spodoptera littoralis Boisd. (Lep., Noctuidae) and prevailing natural enemies in the Egyptian cotton fields.

The Egyptian cotton (Gossypium barbadense L.) accounts for 65 % of the world production of long stable cultivars. Taking into consideration the competition of other cotton producing countries, it should be of great importance to control pests, which attack the cotton plants to improve the yield and its quality. The main objective of this study is to develop new approaches for the management of the cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis Boisd. within an IPM program, that include synthetic insecticides rationalization, and maximiziation the role of the biological control agents. Preliminary observations on factors responsible for long persistence and continued outbreaks of plague in Lushoto district, Tanzania.

Human plague has been an important public health problem in Tanzania for over a century. Recorded outbreaks of the disease have been reported from various parts of Tanzania, including Iringa, Kagera, Singida, Mbulu, Arusha and Kilimanjaro since 1886. Since 1980 however, only Lushoto, Singida and Karatu districts have experienced outbreaks of the disease. Of these areas, Lushoto has disproportionately high incidences of the disease and this has persisted for nearly 17 years. Efforts to curb the disease through conventional methods, including control of vectors and reservoirs, chemotherapy and c

The effects of daily fluctuating low-oxygen conditions on life table parameters of Tribolium castaneum (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) and their subsequent generations in controlled atmospheres.

Understanding pest insect survival and development under conditions of fluctuating low oxygen levels (less than 4.4%) is of practical significance in the control of nitrogen atmospheres for grain storage. Egg hatching, sixth instar survival, adult emergence rate, and adult survival rates of Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) were determined following 8-d exposure periods of eggs, sixth-instar larvae, pupae, and adults to daily fluctuating oxygen concentrations within ranges of 1.9% to 4.4%, 1.9% to 3.9%, 1.9% to 3.5%, 1.9% to 3.2%, 1.9% to 2.7%, 1.9% to 2.5%, and 1.9% to

Intrinsic risk factors for alpha-gal syndrome in a case-control study, 2019 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is an allergy to galactose-α-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal), a carbohydrate found in most mammals. Evidence indicates that AGS develops after a tick bite, and in the United States, AGS is most associated with bites from Amblyomma americanum (lone star tick); however, not all persons bitten by ticks develop clinical AGS. OBJECTIVE: To investigate intrinsic risk factors associated with the development of AGS. METHODS: We performed a case-control study among adults presenting for diagnosis or management of AGS at an allergy clinic in North Carolina during 2019 to

Dopamine as an anorectic neuromodulator in the cockroach Rhyparobia maderae.

Insects, including cockroaches, self-select a balanced diet when faced with different nutrient choices. For self-selection to be carried out effectively, insects possess neuroregulatory systems to control their food intake. In the present study, we examined the role of the neurotransmitter dopamine (DA) in the feeding regulation of the Madeira cockroach (Rhyparobia maderae). When R. maderae nymphs were injected with 20 μl of 100 mmol l(-1) DA, they showed an 83.3% reduction in sucrose intake and a 78.9% reduction in total intake compared with saline-injected controls. The DA agonist, 2-amino-6

African animal trypanosomosis (nagana) in northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: Strategic treatment of cattle on a farm in endemic area.

African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) is caused by several species of the genus Trypanosoma, a parasitic protozoan infecting domestic and wild animals. One of the major effects of infection with pathogenic trypanosome is anaemia. Currently, the control policies for tsetse and trypanosomosis are less effective in South Africa. The only response was to block treat all infected herds and change the dip chemical to one which controls tsetse flies during severe outbreaks. This policy proved to be less effective as demonstrated by the current high level of trypanosome infections in cattle. Our objecti

Mosquitocidal properties of IgG targeting the glutamate-gated chloride channel in three mosquito disease vectors (Diptera: Culicidae).

The glutamate-gated chloride channel (GluCl) is a highly sensitive insecticide target of the avermectin class of insecticides. As an alternative to using chemical insecticides to kill mosquitoes, we tested the effects of purified immunoglobulin G (IgG) targeting the extracellular domain of GluCl from Anopheles gambiae (AgGluCl) on the survivorship of three key mosquito disease vectors: Anopheles gambiae s.s., Aedes aegypti and Culex tarsalis. When administered through a single blood meal, anti-AgGluCl IgG reduced the survivorship of A. gambiae in a dose-dependent manner (LC50: 2.82 mg ml(-1),

Controlling sleeping sickness - a review.

Following a period characterized by severe epidemics of sleeping sickness, restoration of effective control and surveillance systems has raised the question of eliminating the disease from sub-Saharan Africa. Given sufficient political and financial support, elimination is now considered a reasonable aim in countries reporting zero or less than 100 cases per year. This success may lead health authorities across the affected region to downgrade the disease from 'neglected' to simply being ignored. In view of the significant levels of under-reporting of sleeping sickness mortality in rural commu

Fitness of anopheline mosquitoes expressing transgenes that inhibit Plasmodium development.

One potential strategy for the control of malaria and other vector-borne diseases is the introduction into wild vector populations of genetic constructs that reduce vectorial capacity. An important caveat of this approach is that the genetic construct should have minimal fitness cost to the transformed vector. Previously, we produced transgenic Anopheles stephensi expressing either of two effector genes, a tetramer of the SM1 dodecapeptide or the phospholipase A2 gene (PLA2) from honeybee venom. Mosquitoes carrying either of these transgenes were impaired for Plasmodium berghei transmission. W

[Use of spatial analysis tools in the epidemiological surveillance of American visceral leishmaniasis, Araçatuba, São Paulo, Brazil, 1998-1999].

The control of American visceral leishmaniasis (AVL) is based on combating the vector and eliminating the domestic reservoir of the focus area - defined as 200 meters around human or canine cases. This paper discusses the use of spatial analysis techniques in the epidemiological surveillance of AVL in Araçatuba, São Paulo State, in order to propose a model for territorial epidemiological surveillance, reformulating current control strategies. The results showed that AVL transmission was not homogeneous; human cases were more frequent in areas with higher canine prevalence rates. Vector dispers

The distribution of tsetse (Diptera: Glossinidae) and bovine trypanosomosis in the Matutuine District, Maputo Province, Mozambique.

A tsetse and bovine trypanosomosis survey was conducted during 1998 and 1999 in the Matutuine District of Maputo Province (Mozambique). A total of 59 Glossina brevipalpis and 17 Glossina austeni were captured throughout the district. Survey results suggest that Glossina brevipalpis is mainly concentrated in dense vegetation along the Maputo River and in the wetlands east of the river. G. austeni, on the other hand, was captured mainly in dense thickets in drier areas. Both tsetse species are suspected to be vectors of bovine trypanosomosis. Bovine trypanosomosis (75,5% Trypanosoma congolense)

Description of a computer model of forest onchocerciasis transmission and its application to field scenarios of vector control and chemotherapy.

This paper describes a computer simulation model for onchocerciasis (SIMON). Using epidemiological and entomological data from a specific hyperendemic village in the forest area of Sierra Leone, the model is used to examine the effect of vector and chemotherapeutic control strategies, both separately and in combination, as well as the risk to an uninfected population caused by immigrant, infected Simulium damnosum and humans. The model suggests that, in this village, the human population of about 420 requires an average annual input of about 200 mature fecund, female Onchocerca volvulus per ye
