Rumor-Related and Exclusive Behavior Coverage in Internet News Reports Following the 2009 H1N1 Influenza Outbreak in Japan.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to elucidate news article reporting of adverse public psychosocial behaviors, in particular, rumor-related coverage (eg, panic, demagoguery) and exclusive behavior coverage (negative behaviors, eg, discrimination, bullying) during the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) influenza pandemic in Japan. METHODS: We examined 154 Internet news-site articles reporting adverse public psychosocial responses in the first 60 days of the outbreak. Rumor-related coverage and exclusive behavior coverage were dichotomously coded as included or not. Moreover, we assessed whether or not health informa…

Meeting sex partners through the Internet, risky sexual behavior, and HIV testing among sexually transmitted infections clinic patients.

The Internet has now become a popular venue to meet sex partners. People who use the Internet to meet sex partners may be at a higher risk for contracting HIV and STIs. This study examined the association between meeting sex partners from the Internet, and HIV testing, STI history, and risky sexual behavior. Data were obtained from the Virginia Department of Health STD Surveillance Network. Logistic regression models were used to obtain crude and adjusted odds ratios, and 95 % confidence intervals for the associations between meeting sex partners through the Internet and ever tested for HIV, H…

Therapeutic alliance in guided internet-delivered cognitive behavioural treatment of depression, generalized anxiety disorder and social anxiety disorder.

Guided internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) has been found to be effective in several controlled trials, but the mechanisms of change are largely unknown. Therapeutic alliance is a factor that has been studied in many psychotherapy trials, but the role of therapeutic alliance in ICBT is less well known. The present study investigated early alliance ratings in three separate samples. Participants from one sample of depressed individuals (N = 49), one sample of individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (N = 35), and one sample with social anxiety disorder (N = 90) completed …

Self-reported premature ejaculation prevalence and characteristics in Korean young males: community-based data from an internet survey.

Premature ejaculation (PE) is suspected to be the most prevalent male sexual complaint, and the prevalence of PE is considerably high also in the younger generation. We investigated the PE prevalence based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (4th ed text revision; DSM-IV-TR) definition and the risk factors of PE in Korean young men via Internet survey. Subjects (n = 3980) aged from 20 to 59, who performed sexual intercourse more than once a month during the past 6 months were asked to participate in this study. Participants were asked to complete a questionnaire that c…

Internet-based self-help versus one-session exposure in the treatment of spider phobia: a randomized controlled trial.

The authors compared guided Internet-delivered self-help with one session of live-exposure treatment in a sample of spider-phobic patients. A total of 30 patients were included following screening on the Internet and a structured clinical interview. The Internet treatment consisted of five weekly text modules, which were presented on a web page, a video in which exposure was modelled, and support provided via Internet. The live-exposure treatment was delivered in a 3-hr session following a brief orientation session. The main outcome measure was the behavioural approach test (BAT), and as secon…

Use of gay Internet sites and views about online health promotion among men who have sex with men.

In May-June 2002, 4,974 men who have sex with men (MSM), average age 31 years, completed a self-administered questionnaire online accessed through two popular gay Internet sites in the UK (gaydar and gay.com UK). Most men were white (95%), employed (83%), lived in the UK (91%) and self-identified as gay (85%). Nearly half (46%) had not been tested for HIV, while 6% said they were HIV-positive. One-third (31%) reported high-risk sexual behaviour in the previous three months, i.e. unprotected anal intercourse with a partner of unknown or discordant HIV status. Nearly all the men (82%) had looked…

Can't Name It, Can't Log Off: Alexithymia and Problematic Internet-Related Behaviors: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Alexithymia has been proposed as a ransdiagnostic vulnerability for behavioral addictions, but its role in problematic Internet-related behaviors (PIB) has not been quantified across phenotypes and populations. We conducted a preregistered systematic review and meta-analysis following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses. Major databases were searched in October 2025 for studies reporting quantitative associations between alexithymia and PIB (problematic Internet, smartphone, social media, gaming use, or cyberbullying). Risk of bias was appraised with Joanna Brigg…

"Better Sleep Means I'm Better Able to Provide Care": Caregivers' Perceived Impacts of an Internet-Delivered Insomnia Intervention.

INTRODUCTION: Family caregivers frequently experience sleep challenges that impact their own health and ability to provide care for a care recipient (i.e., the person a caregiver supports). Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) effectively treats insomnia, but there is limited evidence regarding caregivers' perceived impacts of this intervention. The current study evaluated caregivers' experiences using Sleep Healthy Using The Internet (SHUTi), an Internet-delivered CBT-I intervention. METHOD: The sample comprised caregivers with insomnia who supported care recipients requiring me…

Longitudinal associations among posttraumatic stress symptoms, intolerance of uncertainty and internet gaming disorder symptoms among disaster-exposed adolescents.

Disaster-exposed adolescents face elevated risks for developing posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and maladaptive coping behaviors, including internet gaming disorder (IGD). However, the longitudinal mechanisms underlying these relationships remain unclear, particularly the role of intolerance of uncertainty (IU) as a potential transdiagnostic vulnerability factor. This longitudinal study examined 403 disaster-exposed adolescents (Mage = 13.33, SD = 0.52; 49.6% girls) across three waves. PTSS, IU, and IGD symptoms were assessed at three time points, with a six-month interval between each as…

From social media to body image distress: Problematic internet use, exercise addiction, and enhancement drugs use across countries.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Social media increasingly shapes body image by promoting often unattainable beauty ideals. Concurrently, targeted online marketing of image- and performance-enhancing drugs (IPEDs) exploits these vulnerabilities, intensifying anxiety and fostering maladaptive behaviours such as problematic usage of the internet (PUI), compulsive exercise, and IPEDs consumption. This study explores these behaviours across nine countries and examines how PUI, excessive exercise, and IPEDs use predict appearance anxiety, aiming to inform targeted prevention strategies for at-risk populations.…

An intelligent embedded fuzzy genetic classifier based network intrusion detection system for secured communication in internet of things.

Internet of things (IoT) is a distributed connection of smart objects which collects the data or information from the deployed environment and communicates the data to other devices with Internet as a backbone. Due to its unfriendly deployment nature and openness in communication via Internet, IoT is vulnerable to various types of attacks during data transmission. Intrusion Detection System (IDS) is an effective method to provide strong and efficient security to IoT devices. IDS is a software that tracks the network traffic and identifies the anomalies and abnormal activities. An Improved Ant …

Analgesic use after internet-supported versus clinic-based neck-specific exercise in people with whiplash: a secondary analysis.

BACKGROUND: Neck-specific exercise (NSE), administered by a physiotherapist or via e-health platforms (NSEIT), has demonstrated promising outcomes in individuals with chronic whiplash-associated disorders (WAD). Whether NSE and NSEIT lead to changes in analgesic use is of clinical importance, but remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the changes in analgesic use among participants with WAD following either NSE or NSEIT. METHODS: A multicenter randomized controlled noninferiority trial with masked assessors was conducted across multiple physiotherapy clinics. Participants (n = 140)

Associations Between Problematic Internet Use, Attentional Control, and Mental Health Symptoms in Romanian Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study.

INTRODUCTION: Problematic internet use has been increasingly associated with depression, anxiety and other psychiatric symptoms; however, its impact on attentional functioning has not been thoroughly researched. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Târgu Mureș, Romania, and aimed to examine the associations between problematic internet use, attentional control, and symptoms of depression and anxiety in adults, and to determine whether problematic internet use independently predicts attentional control after accounting for emotional symptoms. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conduct…
