A case is reported of a 24-year-old woman with amenorrhea and galactorrhea and markedly elevated serum prolactin levels who underwent operative resection of a pituitary adenoma. Ultrastructural examination revealed the classic features of an oncocytoma. Immunocytochemical staining was positive for prolactin. Following excision of the tumor, serum prolactin levels returned to normal and the galactorrhea became minimal. This is the first case of a pituitary oncocytoma in which secretion of prolactin was both clinically and immunocytochemically documented.

Forty women with secondary amenorrhea and galactorrhea, thirty-six of whom had associated hyperprolactinemia, were studied prior to therapy with ergocryptine. Abnormal sella tomographic findings were present in 23. The findings on sellar tomography, basal serum prolactin concentrations, and pharmacologic stimulation/suppression of the serum prolactin failed to predict subsequent responders and nonresponders to ergocryptine. Two patients with primary hypothyroidism and galactorrhea are described. Elevated serum prolactin and thyroid-stimulating hormone levels were present. Following adequate thyroid hormone replacement restoration of clinical euthyroidism and cessation of galactorrhea occurred with a fall of both TSH and prolactin levels to normal.

In this study we report 13 cases of amenorrhea-galactorrhea and one of a male patient complaining of gynecomastia, galactorrhea, sexual impotence and sterility with oligoasthénospermy. In these cases, the size of the sella turcica was normal but we found a localized depression of the bottom of the sella turcica; these modifications were situated at the antero-inferior part of the sella in 12 cases and posteriorly in the 2 others.
