Magnesium concentration influences size and pulse rate in the upside-down jellyfish, Cassiopea andromeda.

Magnesium is involved in a variety of physiological processes in marine animals and is known to be deleterious in both excess and deficiency. The effects of magnesium concentration ranging from 700 mg/L (low), 1344 mg/L (control), and 2000 mg/L (high) on size and pulse rate in upside-down jellyfish (Cassiopea andromeda) medusae were examined in two separate 28-day trials. Exposure to low magnesium resulted in significantly (p < .05) higher pulse rates and decreased bell diameter and also produced oral arm degradation. Exposure to high magnesium resulted in significantly (p < .05) lower pulse r

Role of zinc in treatment of experimental acute pancreatitis in mice.

A study on the effect of zinc feeding on the survival rate as well as the levels of trypsinogen, alpha 2-macroglobulin, zinc, calcium, and magnesium in the plasma, pancreata, and livers of BALB/c mice fed a choline-deficient diet supplemented with 0.5% DL-ethionine (CDE diet) was undertaken. Feeding them a zinc-excess diet significantly increased the survival rate of mice with pancreatitis induced by CDE diet feeding. Trypsinogen concentrations in plasma and pancreas increased in mice fed a CDE diet and further increased in mice fed a zinc-deficient diet. The plasma alpha 2-macroglobulin level

Hypomagnesemia: a potential underlooked cause of persistent vitamin D deficiency in chronic kidney disease.

Magnesium and vitamin D play important roles in most cells of the body. These nutrients act in a coordinated fashion to maintain physiologic functions of various organs, and their abnormal balance could adversely affect these functions. Therefore, deficient states of both nutrients may lead to several chronic medical conditions and increased cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients have altered metabolism of both magnesium and vitamin D. Some studies indicate that magnesium could have a role in the synthesis and metabolism of vitamin D, and that magnesium s

Comprehensive View of Magnesium Physiology.

Significant progress has been observed in recent decades, elucidating the biochemical, cellular, and molecular pathways that regulate the 10% inorganic ions, such as Na, K, Ca, HCO3, Cl, and fluid balance in both health and diseases. However, magnesium (Mg), a forgotten electrolyte, despite its critical role as the calcium antagonist found in nature with clinically relevant data on Mg disorders, was one of the least used ions till the late twentieth century. The underappreciation of the clinical importance of Mg may stem from a lack of detailed knowledge about its regulation at the subcellular

The kidney reabsorption-related magnesium depletion score is associated with increased likelihood of abdominal aortic calcification among US adults.

BACKGROUND: Kidney reabsorption plays a vital role in magnesium homeostasis. This study aimed to determine the relationship between the kidney reabsorption-related magnesium depletion score (MDS) and abdominal aortic calcification (AAC). METHODS: We obtained data for 2640 individuals from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey database and analysed the relationship between the MDS and AAC score. The MDS is a scoring system developed to predict the status of magnesium deficiency that fully considers the pathophysiological factors influencing the kidneys' reabsorption capability. …

[Efficacy and limits of magnesium therapy in extrasystole].

This study was carried out on a group of 19 patients with extrasystolic arrhythmia, the origin of which was atrial and/or ventricular. Its mean value was at least one extrasystole per minute. The patients were monitored by Holter for 24 h. In this population, we found a plasmatic and/or erythrocytic hypomagnesemia in two thirds of the patients. The simultaneous finding of an extrasystolic arrhythmia and of a lowering of magnesium values might be a mere coincidence. Treatment with intravenous magnesium salts did not significantly reduce the frequency of extrasystolic beats in any of our patient

Suboptimal magnesium status in the United States: are the health consequences underestimated?

In comparison with calcium, magnesium is an "orphan nutrient" that has been studied considerably less heavily. Low magnesium intakes and blo … y Reference Intakes determined by balance studies may be misleading if subjects have chronic latent magnesium deficiency but are assumed to be healthy. Cellular magnesium deficit, perhaps involving TRPM6/7 channels, elicits calcium-activated inflammatory cascades independent of injury or pathogens. An evaluation of the impact of oral magnesium lactate on the corrected QT interval of patients receiving sotalol or dofetilide to prevent atrial or ventricular tachyarrhythmia recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Intravenous magnesium reduces the QTc interval of patients receiving ibutilide. Whether oral magnesium can reduce the QTc interval associated with oral sotalol and dofetilide is not known. This study was undertaken to evaluate the impact of oral magnesium on the QTc interval and whether an inherent intracellular magnesium deficiency exists among patients with arrhythmias. METHODS: Participants receiving sotalol or dofetilide for atrial or ventricular arrhythmias were randomized to receive magnesium l-lactate (504 mg elemental magnesium daily, Niche Pharmaceuticals, Roanoke, TX) or…

Neutral endopeptidase inhibition enhances substance P mediated inflammation due to hypomagnesemia.

During dietary deficiency of magnesium neurogenic inflammation is mediated, primarily, by elevated levels of substance P (SP). The enzyme most specific for degrading this neuropeptide is neutral endopeptidase (NEP). In recent studies we found that pharmacological inhibition of NEP by phosphoramidon resulted in elevated plasma levels of SP and greater oxidative stress. We also observed that hypomagnesemia reduced cardiac and intestinal expression of NEP. In these magnesium-deficient rats increased intestinal permeability and impaired cardiac contractility occurred. In our colony of genetically-

Inadequate supplies of potassium and magnesium in relief food--implications and countermeasures.

Analyses of relief food used in Ethiopia showed that, because of food refinement, 6 out of 10 samples of cereals contained too little potassium and magnesium to cover daily needs. Malnutrition is often associated with gastrointestinal infections, which lead to further deficiency of these electrolytes. Potassium and magnesium are required for protein synthesis, growth, and tissue repair. Since protein supplies are often marginal, relief food should contain sufficient potassium and magnesium to allow optimum utilisation of dietary nitrogen sources. This may be achieved by using coarse qualities

The Clinical Spectrum of Acquired Hypomagnesemia: From Etiology to Therapeutic Approaches.

Hypomagnesemia is a frequent and often underrecognized electrolyte disturbance with important clinical consequences, especially in hospitalized and critically ill patients. This multifactorial condition arises from impaired intestinal absorption, renal magnesium wasting, and the effects of various medications. Magnesium, the second most abundant intracellular cation, is crucial in enzymatic and physiological processes; its deficiency is associated with neuromuscular, cardiovascular, and metabolic complications. This narrative review focuses on the mechanisms and clinical consequences of drug-i

The effect of calcium and magnesium ions on calcium pyrophosphate crystal formation in aqueous solutions.

Calcium pyrophosphate crystal formation has been associated clinically with hypercalcemic states (hyperparathyroidism) and hypomagnesemia. W … rmed. As [Mg++] affects the crystal phase formed more than equimolar [Ca++], we conclude that ionic magnesium deficiency may be a clinically important determinant in calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal formation.

Magnesium intake and mortality due to liver diseases: Results from the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey Cohort.

People with fatty liver disease are at high risk of magnesium deficiency. Meanwhile, low magnesium status is linked to both chronic inflammation and insulin resistance. However, no study has investigated the association between intake of magnesium and risk of mortality due to liver diseases. We evaluated the association between total magnesium intake and mortality due to liver diseases in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Study (NHANES III) cohort, which included 13,504 participants who completed liver ultrasound examination for hepatic steatosis. Overall magnesium intake was…

Role of dietary magnesium in cardiovascular disease prevention, insulin sensitivity and diabetes.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes the evidence for benefits of magnesium on metabolic abnormalities, inflammatory parameters, and ca … for the direct impact of magnesium intake on metabolic and cardiovascular risk factors, but in-vivo magnesium deficiency might play only a modest role. Reverse causality, the strong association between magnesium and other beneficial nutrients, or the possibility that people who choose magnesium-rich foods are more health-conscious may be confounding factors.
