OBJECTIVE: To identify dentofacial anatomic traits associated with lower incisor cancellous bone thickness (LICBT) and then to assess their separate contributions and their combined contributions to the variation in LICBT.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A consecutive sample of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) data taken in a university hospital within the same setting was retrospectively reviewed. Within the sample, CBCT data of 252 eligible subjects were reconstructed and measured for LICBT, facial traits, and mandibular symphyseal traits. A backward multiple linear regression was employed to ex

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of forced lateral bite on mandibular growth, micro X-ray computed tomography (CT) was used for the purpose evaluating condylar cartilage and cancellous bone formation in 10 male Wister rats (3 weeks of age). SETTINGS AND SAMPLE POPULATION: The rats were divided into two groups--experimental and control. In experimental group, an inclined crown was cemented onto the maxillary incisors to produce 2.5 mm shift toward the left side during mastication. Right-left differences in whole mandibular length, mandibular height, condylar size, trabecular structure o

PURPOSE: Resection of the posterior mandible for tumor or osteonecrosis may include the mandibular condyle, an integral part of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Condylar reconstruction, including use of prostheses, the native condylar head, or part of the fibula, all have associated drawbacks including skull base erosion and the potential for ankylosis and TMJ dysfunction as well as the increased difficulty associated with trying to recapitulate the TMJ with high fidelity. We report our experience leaving a single side of the reconstructed mandible unsecured to the glenoid fossa, allowing th

Interdisciplinary treatment was used for an adult patient born with complete bilateral cleft lip and palate. He had a severe maxillary deficiency with a wide cleft involving the alveolar and maxillary bone and palate. Reconstruction of the arches and occlusion in patients who missed the optimal treatment time is a difficult task for orthodontists. The clinical examination showed severe hypogenesis of the maxillary bone with a total crossbite. The maxillary dental arch was extremely narrow, and the maxillary incisors showed extensive caries caused by improper oral hygiene. Fixed and removable e

Ameloblastoma is a benign odontogenic tumor with high recurrence rate. It can cause severe abnormalities of the face and jaw, leading to severe disfiguration and impaired jaw and airway functions. Wide local excision and reconstruction are required for ameloblastoma. Recurrence in the free bone graft is rare, especially in the fibula free flap. A 67-year-old man had a history of ameloblastoma of the left mandible resected 16 years ago with reconstruction using the fibula free flap. Three years ago, radiologic examination suggested a possible tumor recurrence in the fibula free flap. Because of

Intraosseous vascular lesions are rare lesions, accounting for 0.5-1% of all intraosseous tumors. They were found to be affecting the second decade of life, more frequent in women. The frequency found affecting the vertebral column and skull; the mandible is a quite rare location. At present, according to the World Health Organization, these lesions are now considered as benign vasoformative neoplasms of endothelial origin. However, the origin of the central hemangioma is debatable. Some authors state it as a true neoplasm, few state it is a hamartoma. On examination, the patient may or may no

A method for simulating the movement of teeth, jaw and face caused by orthognathic surgery is proposed, characterized by the use of 3D cephalometric data for 3D simulation. Computed tomography data are not required. The teeth and facial data are obtained by a laser scanner and the data for the patient's mandible are reconstructed and integrated according to 3D cephalometry using a projection-matching technique. The mandibular form is simulated by transforming a generic model to match the patient's cephalometric data. This system permits analysis of bone movement at each individual part, while

Macrostomia is a deformity that occurs alone or in combination with other anomalies as a result of a failure of merging of the maxillary and mandibular processes of the first branchial arch. In an attempt to restore normal anatomy, a repair has been designed that includes provision of a lighter shade, rounded, nonrugated vermilion surface for the new oral commissure. The muscular ring is also reconstructed, and a Z-plasty is incorporated into the skin closure. In the patient described, an interesting band of fibrotic tissue was identified in the cleft, connecting the upper and lower orbiculari

BACKGROUND: Bone defects around the teeth affect a large portion of the population. Bone regeneration in the area of existing teeth is completely different from that in an edentulous area. To date, no method has been developed for three-dimensional (3D) bone reconstruction in regions with preserved teeth.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to radiologically evaluate the results of the new method of 3D mandibular bone reconstruction in preserved dentition using a custom-made allogeneic bone block with a 6-month follow-up.

Traumatic panfacial fracture repair is one of the most complex and challenging reconstructive procedures to perform. Several principles permeate throughout literature regarding the repair of panfacial injuries in a stepwise fashion. The primary goal of management in most of these approaches is to restore the occlusal relationship at the beginning of sequential repair so that other structures can fall into alignment. Through proper positioning of the occlusion and the mandibular-maxillary unit with the skull base, the spatial relationships and stability of midface buttresses and pillars can the

Results of the use of antibiotics for prevention and treatment of different maxillo-facial pathology in maxillo-facial surgery are presented. Antibiotics for prevention were employed in 185 patients and the results were compared with 165 patients serving as control group. For the prevention of postoperative complications single intravenous injections of antibiotics (Ceftriaxon, Rocifen, Lyncomycin) before narcosis were used in double doses. It was confirmed that this measure allow complete prevention of postoperative purulent complications in cases of closed mandibular fractures, reconstructiv

In a patient having common carotid artery occlusion complicated with contralateral internal carotid artery stenosis, a saphenous vein bypass graft was performed from the contralateral external carotid artery to the ipsilateral external carotid artery simultaneously with contralateral carotid endarterectomy. The bypass was patent 1 year later and the patient was free from fainting spells. Among a number of the reconstructive surgical procedures, this "half-collar bypass" can be placed adequately in the subcutaneous soft tissue so that head or mandibular movement does not displace or compress th

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and long-term outcome of the bilaminar cortical tenting grafting technique for reconstruction of vertical and horizontal alveolar ridge defects.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A bone block harvested from the lateral aspect of the mandibular ramus was bisected into two cortical laminae, which were then used to reconstruct the buccal and palatal walls of an alveolar ridge defect. The inter-laminar space was filled with particulate autogenous bone and the whole graft was covered with anorganic bone graft and collagen membrane. After 4-6 months, the width and height of
